Wolff - 'Leaving the sport now would certainly not be the right thing'

Mercedes principal Toto Wolff believes says it wouldn't make sense for his team to leave Formula 1 in 2021 "from a commercial point of view".

The Silver Arrows have dominated F1 since the turbo-hybrid era began in 2014, picking up all six Drivers' and Constructors' titles on offer.

But their future in the series is far from secure with rumours of an impending exit, while Wolff himself admitted that cutting the level of investment from parent company Daimler into the team is key for their future.

New financial, sporting and technical regulations will sweep into F1 in 2021 as the sport looks to become more financially sustainable and competitive, and Wolff feels this opportunity means it wouldn't be "right" for Mercedes to make their exit.

"Leaving the sport now would certainly not be the right thing from a commercial point of view if it now becomes a new opportunity," he told Motorsport-Total.com.

"All numbers are growing – from television viewers to the digital world to sponsorship.

"We all ten [teams] should be proud that we are part of such a limited field of starters.

"We should be aware of the opportunities and opportunities ahead of us and focus on making it a good deal to make for everyone."

On that subject F1 chiefs are looking to open up the grid to new teams, and Wolff sees this as a good thing.

"If there is interest in joining the field with a solid foundation: why shouldn't we talk about it?," he questioned.
