WATCH | Max Verstappen and Alex Albon swap their F1 race cars for... cooler boxes?

Red Bull drivers, Max Verstappen and Alex Albon, got their 2020 Formula 1 campaign off to a solid start by going back to the root of their racing careers.

On what looks to be a harbour of sorts, the Red Bull duo was tasked with the very important mission to race go-karts around a track. The thing is, their go-karts were not your conventional machines, but rather cooler boxes on motorized trollies.

It’s clear from the video that the seating positions are not as comfortable as that of their F1 race cars, but the two drivers still made the most of it. While racing, they are seen cutting corners, leaving the ‘racetrack’ altogether, and just having an absolute ball of a time. 

If this had been an actual race, Red Bull team boss, Christian Horner, would not have been too pleased with their on-track antics. And worse, the FIA, F1’s governing body, would probably have laid a heavy punishment on the drivers and the team.

This weekend, the 2020 F1 season will begin in earnest with the Australian GP. While the continuation of the season has been cast into doubt thanks to the dreaded coronavirus, race organisers and the FIA agreed that this event should go ahead.

While not ideal, teams are ready to take up the rivalries that ended at the end of last year.

For Red Bull, they’ll have a number of goals to attain throughout 2020. Firstly, they want to win Verstappen to win the drivers’ championship ahead of Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton, who’s won five of the last six titles. The second goal, one that’s a tad more attainable, is to beat Ferrari to second place in the constructors’ race.

Red Bull Racing saw Ferrari beat them by a handful of points in 2019 and will be aiming to avoid a repeat of that. With Albon having proved his worth, the team will look for more consistent results from their driver line-up, and will be expecting nothing less than a podium finish in every race.

The season begins this weekend, 13 - 15 March 2020.
