Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton was crowned the winner of a remarkable Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday, despite Ferarri's Sebastian Vettel taking the chequered flag. The Ferrari ace was hit with a five-second penalty and demoted to runner-up for a near-collision with Hamilton.
Vettel had grabbed pole from Hamilton on Saturday afternoon, his first in 17 races since the German Grand Prix in 2018.
The Ferrari driver had led the entire race from pole in Montreal, until he came off the track in Lap 58 of 70. Vettel was seen going off the track at turn 3 and then over the grass at turn 4 before he rejoined the track.
According to a report by Formula 1.com, the stewards reviewed video evidence and determined that Car 5 (Vettel), left the track at turn 3, rejoined the track at turn 4 in an unsafe manner and forced car 44 (Hamilton) off track. Car 44 had to take evasive action to avoid a collision.

The stewards, having received a report from the Race Director, have considered the following matter and determine the following:

Fact: Car 5 left the track, re-joined unsafely and forced another car off track.
Offence: Involved in an incident as defined by Article 38.1 of the FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations.
Decision: 5 second time penalty (2 point awarded, 7 points in total for the 12 month period).
Reason: The stewards reviewed video evidence and determined that Car 5, left the track at turn 3, rejoined the track at turn 4 in an unsafe manner and forced car 44 off track. Car 44 had to take evasive action to avoid a collision.
Competitors are reminded that they have the right to appeal certain decisions of the Stewards, in accordance with Article 15 of the FIA International Sporting Code and Article 9.1.1 of the FIA Judicial and Disciplinary Rules, within the applicable time limits.
A few laps after the incident, Vettel was told he has been given a five-second penalty as he continued to lead the race for the remaining 12 laps.
Vettel was naturally furious. After crossing the finish line first, the Ferrari driver parked his car straight in the garage and stormed off, before he was run after and called back to come to the podium.
