Formula 1 has already thrown up its first bit of controversy before the season has begun by banning Mercedes' dual-axis steering system in 2021. 

The team debuted it in its new W11 car on day two of pre-season testing in Barcelona, Spain last week and AFP reported that "on-board camera footage showed world champion Lewis Hamilton moving the steering wheel towards him as he enters a straight, changing the angle of the front wheels, before pushing the steering wheel away from him at the next corner."

Known as dual-axis steering or DAS, the system allows the driver to alter the alignment of the front wheels on the fly, controlled by pulling and pushing the steering column. F1 technical expert Mark Hughes' take was that the system will heat the tyres more evenly when the rubber is fully upright. 

Mercedes' technical director James Allison said DAS fell within F1's rule book. Clearly, the FIA has deemed it gives the German team too much of an advantage and banned in from next season.
