• SuperSport signs new deal with F1

• Deal will see broadcaster televise races until 2022

• 2020 F1 season to commence on 3 July

SuperSport agreed a new deal with Formula 1 to broadcast races until 2022. F1 TV Pro will also be launched in all areas where SuperSport is available, as part of the deal.

SuperSporthas been the sole broadcaster of F1 races in South Africa and the broader Sub-Sahara Africa for the last couple of years, and the renewal was understood to have been agreed earlier this year.

The SuperSport deal was signed shortly before the originally scheduled start of the 2020 season. However, this year's campaign has, like other leading sports events, been disrupted by the global Covid-19 pandemic. The season is set to commence on 3 July with the Austrian Grand Prix.

More races cancelled

In addition to races that's already been postponed or cancelled, it was announced today (12 July) that the 2020 races in Singapore, Japan, and Azerbaijan have been cancelled, as well.

Formula 1 Management (FOM) has made it clear that it will not be opening up additional free-to-air coverage of the 2020 season when it resumes without fans on-site.

A number of broadcasters have already renewed their deals with FOM. These have included major agreements struck in markets such as in Canada (with TSN), France (with Canal Plus) and across the Nordics (with the Nordic Entertainment Group).
