Raikkonen 'not excited' to become most experienced driver in F1 history

Kimi Raikkonen will surpass former veteran Rubens Barrichello's record for number of Formula 1 starts in 2020.

After arriving in F1 back in 2001, racing for the Sauber team, almost two decades later he is back racing for that same team, although it has now been rebranded Alfa Romeo.

With stints at McLaren, Ferrari, Lotus and back to Ferrari, the 40-year-old has racked up 312 grand prix starts.

This season, with its 22 races, he will reach Barrichello’s record of 322 before breaking it.

Not bothered

Raikkonen isn’t at all fazed.

He told the official F1 website: “On that, not excited. It gives me nothing.”

He is, however, looking forward to his second season with Alfa Romeo. Last year Raikkonen bagged 43 points with a best result of P4, which he achieved at the Brazilian GP. But there were stages in the campaign when Alfa Romeo went off the boil and lacked speed.

He’s hoping they will learn from both the good and bad.

Raikkonen added: “But I’m excited now to have another go and we can improve from this year and learn the lessons from what we’ve done wrong and what we’ve done good and get a bit closer to the front. But time will tell, it’s way too early. Once we start running the cars in the first race… we will get a good idea.”
