The Italian Grand Prix is taking place this weekend and Ferrari is looking to make up for their poor showing so far in the 2020 season. Last weekend, in Belgium, Ferrari had one of their worst showings so far this year when both cars qualified outside of the top ten, as well as finished the race outside of it.

It's a crushing blow to the hopes and dreams of the Tifosi who hoped that Ferrari would be able to bounce back at their home race: the Italian GP.

During the first practice session for this weekend's race, Sebastian Vettel was the second slowest of the 20 drivers, more than 2.2 seconds off Valtteri Bottas from Mercedes-AMG's pace. Charles Leclerc was 11th fastest - a second faster than Vettel. In the second practice session things improved for both drivers, but Leclerc was still 1.3sec off the pace and Vettel 1.5sec.

It's quite ironic, really, that the team who dominated the Italian and Belgian GPs last year, has been relegated to one of the slowest on the grid one year on.

Predictions for the race

Ferrari will be lucky to make an impression at their home GP today, but chances are that they will have to sit back and watch as Mercedes and Red Bull Racing romp away to another strong result. The Scuderia must contend with teams like McLaren and Racing Point this year, but the two AlphaTauri cars have shown good pace in the build-up to the race, as well.

Considering their pace and how far off Mercedes they are, Ferrari will be lucky to finish the race in the points. During the second practice, Daniil Kvyat (AlphaTauri) passed Leclerc cleanly down the main straight as both drivers were driving at full speed. If that happens in the race as well, Ferrari will find itself behind Mercedes, Red Bull, McLaren, Racing Point, and AlphaTauri.

2020 is a challenging year for Ferrari, and the team has given up on their championship ambitions for this year. It could be a while before Ferrari is back to winning ways, but the team had better be prepared for harsh criticism on Monday.
