Carlos Sainz has downplayed suggestions he could be a target for Ferrari if Sebastian Vettel does not renew his contract with the Scuderia, saying he is only focused on performing well with McLaren.

Vettel has yet to announce whether he will continue with Ferrari next season, never mind whether or not he will remain in Formula 1.

The German and his team boss, Mattia Binotto, have stated they will begin discussions after the first few races of this season but of course, those are on hold.

Vettel has been linked to a step down the grid with McLaren, with former driver turned commentator Martin Brundle saying it could yet be a straight swap.

Sainz to Ferrari

Brundle reckons Sainz is one of the favourites to step up to Ferrari should there be a vacant seat.

Told about the rumours linking to him to the Italian team, Sainz is not letting himself get carried away.

He told FoxSport: "I don't know and at the moment I don't really care if Sebastian's going to be the catalyst or not. I think as you guys know, I'm very happy in McLaren. "I feel very much part of this project, part of this medium to long-term project.

"I cannot start thinking about anything else, unless it's wanting this year to be a step forward from last year and keep working in the same direction, with the same objectives, and we will see at the end of the year."

Last season Sainz bagged his maiden Formula 1 podium when he finished third at the Brazilian Grand Prix.

It was McLaren's first champagne moment in over 2,000 days.

Sainz continues with the McLaren team this season, once again partnering Lando Norris in one of the more exciting line ups on the 2020 grid.
