Due to Formula 1's extended shutdown period due to the coronavirus pandemic, virtual grand prix are taking place featuring top drivers and athletes from other sports.

This weekend would've seen the running of the Spanish grand prix from the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, built as part of the 1992 Barcelona Olympics development program, according to F1.com.

However, due to regulations passed by countries where races were to take place and F1 halting any movement of teams, 10 races of what was to have been a record 22-event championship have either been cancelled or postponed.

The sport has been quick to implement virtual grand prix that see top drivers like Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, McLaren's Lando Norris and Red Bull's Alex Albon compete against professional e-sport F1 racing drivers as well as other athletes.

Via the streaming service Twitch, fans can watch the younger generation battle it out on their simulators. Leclerc has two races and Albon the last grand prix at Interlagos, facilitated by F1.

The next race sees driver take on the iconic 4.65km-long Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, which held its first grand prix in 1991. Real Madrid goalkeeper is back once again to race, while Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero makes his virtual grand prix debut on Sunday evening.

South African viewers can catch the virtual Spanish GP on Sunday at 19:00 (CAT) on DSTV channel 208 on SuperSport or you can stream the race on F1's Facebook page, Twitch or F1's Youtube channel
