F1 preview | What you can expect at the Japanese Grand Prix

This weekend's Japanese grand prix at Suzuka will be going ahead in spite of torrential rain and strong winds predicted for Saturday.

According to F1.com, current forecasts suggest Typhoon Hagibis will reach Japan’s shores on Saturday, when final practice and qualifying are due to take place. The FIA has since decided that FP3 and qualifying has been cancelled with the latter to take place on Sunday morning.

If for any other reason qualifying is not possible, the results from practice 2 will be used for the starting grid of the race.

What to expect

The circuit is 5.8km in length with a total of 18 turns and two straight sections at the start and end of the finish line.

Lewis Hamilton's current points tally stands at 322, 73 clear of nearest rival and team mate Valtteri Bottas. Last year's runner-up to Hamilton, Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel, is well off the pace languishing in fifth spot.

He will be looking to build on his victory here from last year, on his way to claiming his sixth championship win.

The emergence of the typhoon also raises a number of questions as to whether possible permutations exist. Would this and the remaining races be rescheduled and when would it take place?

This is not the first time the Japanese grand prix has been halted by bad weather. It has been disrupted on three previous occasions in the past, the most recent in 2014, where F1 driver Jules Bianchi crashed and died several months later due to injuries sustained in the crash.

Kimi Raikkonen currently holds the record for the fastest lap with a time of 1min31.540 set back in 2005 when he was racing for McLaren.
