Two of the greatest Formula 1 drivers battle it out at the 2005 San Marino Grand Prix the famous Imola circuit.

The 62-lap race was dominated by an intense duel between 24-year-old Fernando Alonso and seven-time F1 champion, Michael Schumacher.

Alonso in the Renault had taken the lead on lap nine after Kimi Raikkonen suffered driveshaft problems and was unscathed until lap 50.

A great battle

This was when reigning champion Schumacher began challenging Alonso for the lead and so began one of the best battles ever seen in the sport.

Alonso, in the slightly slower car, held the great German at bay, not letting giving him an inch to make a move.

The cars were powered the 3.0-litre V10 engines, which is said to have produced anywhere between 485kW and 720kW. At the end of the 2005 season, the V10 engine made way for the smaller V8, and that just adds to the drama.

While we wait on news on whether the 2020 F1 season will get underway, it's amazing to watch a defensive driving display like no other and remember that Alonso went on to win his first world drivers' title at the end of the 2005 season.
