Schumacher shocks in Monaco

A flurry of fastest times ended qualifying at Monaco today but it was Mercedes' Michael Schumacher who scored a shock quickest lap.

Unfortunately, he will lose five places on the grid for some bad behaviour in Spain three weeks earlier when he collided with Bruno Senna.

Germany's Nico Rosberg, for Mercedes, will line up alongside Webber on the front row with McLaren's Lewis Hamilton and Frenchman Romain Grosjean, driving a Lotus, behind the front pair.

In the final sessions times suddenly dropped into the 1min14 range.

Pastor Maldonado's chances of winning two F1 races in a row suffered a huge setback when he was handed a 10-place grid penalty for the race.

AVOIDABLE COLLISION

Race stewards, among them Williams' 1992 World champion Nigel Mansell, ruled the Venezuelan had caused an avoidable collision in final practice when his Williams chopped in front of the Sauber of Mexican Sergio Perez.

Maldonado crashed a lap later, ripping the right rear wheel off his car.

The Venezuelan won the 2012 Spanish GP, his first victory in F1 and his team's first in nearly eight years. - Wheels24 and Reuters
