Sauber: Wrong stop/go call 'inexcusable'

SPIELBERG, Austria - The Sauber F1 team has branded its performance in the 2014 Austrian GP "inexcusable"; a bungled pit stop brought in the wrong car and ruined the race for both its drivers.

The Swiss-based F1 team, once a consistent midfield presence, is in a sorry state in the 2014 season without a single point from eight races.

Wheels24 reported on Sauber's pits-lane error during the 2014 Austrian GP on Sunday June 22.

'HUGE MISTAKE'

Sauber's chances of scoring at the Red Bull Ring in Austria disappeared when driver Esteban Gutierrez was released from his first pit stop before a wheel nut had been secured - an error that cost him a 10-second stop-and-go penalty.

The order to stop was mistakenly sent to the team's other driver, Adrian Sutil, who was on track and obeyed. He continued once the error became apparent but by then the damage was done.

Head of track engineering Giampaolo Dall'Ara said: "What we delivered was inexcusable. The mistakes at the pit stop spoiled our race - procedures were not adhered to.

"As a result we stopped the wrong car. Adrian, who was out on the track, was stopped by a radio communication which was simply a huge mistake."
