21 Oct 21:50 Kimi Raikkonen takes his first win in 113 races. Max makes his first podium in the US in P2 and Hamilton is 3rd.
21 Oct 21:46 Geez. too much action for our hearts. Max won't let Lewis pass and Vettel goes pass Bottas!
21 Oct 21:42 Lewis just needs to get past Verstappen to win the championship, but it is proving to be near impossible.
21 Oct 21:31 Wouldn't it be lovely though to see Kimi win this race?
21 Oct 21:27 If Hamilton finishes in P3, he won't be winning the championship today. He will have to win the race.
21 Oct 21:22 15 more laps to go.
21 Oct 21:18 Verstappen told Hamilton has pitted due to severe blistering on the softs.
21 Oct 21:17 Hamilton comes out behind Bottas who will naturally let him pass.
21 Oct 21:16 Lewis is coming in to pit!
21 Oct 21:12 What can Mercedes' strategy be? They need to bring Hamilton in. Kimi is catching up fast.
21 Oct 21:09 Hamilton's rear tyres looking quite tender and LeClerc told to retire the car - second race in a row.
21 Oct 21:07 If positions stay as they currently are, Hamilton will become the 2018 F1 champion winner.
21 Oct 21:06 Vettel asking about the frontrunners on the radio.
21 Oct 21:04 Pirelli predicts Hamilton to do a 2-stop.
21 Oct 20:59 Vettel comes out of the pits.
21 Oct 20:56 Vettel told to let Kimi pass.
21 Oct 20:56 Lap 25/ 56. Vettel still not pitted as he wants fresh tyres towards the end.
21 Oct 20:54 Verstappen comes out in front of Bottas!
21 Oct 20:51 Vettel should just let Kimi through now.
21 Oct 20:50 Kimi pits and comes out with soft compounds.
21 Oct 20:49 Lewis just can't get pass Kimi!
21 Oct 20:49 Sainz given a 5second penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage.
12:42 Weather Update: Cloudy with chance of rain.
17:04 Well that was exciting, wasn't it?! Make sure you join us tomorrow for what could be the crowning of a five-time World Champion for just the third time in Formula 1 history. Our coverage will start 6pm UK time, 12pm Texas time. Join us then, bye for now.
17:03 So Kimi Raikkonen will line up alongside Lewis Hamilton on the front row of the grid at COTA on Sunday, and the Finn will have the quicker (US) tyre. That could put a spanner in the works.
17:02 Esteban Ocon qualifies in P6 as the best of the rest, ahead of Nico Hulkenberg, Romain Grosjean, Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez.
17:01 Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen were within 0.07s of the Brit, with Bottas in P4. However, Vettel will drop down behind Daniel Ricciardo and start tomorrow's race in P5 after he takes his penalty.
17:00 Lewis Hamilton now goes quickest... Just Vettel left..
17:00 Kimi Raikkonen goes fastest...
16:59 Bottas moves into P2, ahead of Sebastian Vettel.
16:59 Sebastian Vettel goes purple through the first sector once again. Kimi Raikkonen goes purple in the middle sector, but then so does Lewis Hamilton.
16:58 Here we go...
16:57 All ten cars are out on track with just over two minutes to go in qualifying.
16:56 Four minutes to go, and the drivers are getting ready to go for that final attempt in Austin.
16:54 Romain Grosjean has P6 at the moment, with Hulkenberg, Ocon and Perez following him. Leclerc yet to set a time so far.
16:53 Hamilton has provisional pole! A 1:32.567 is a new track lap record, to start with, but also gets ahead of Vettel and Bottas by a tenth of a second. Raikkonen is +0.4s, with Ricciardo +0.9s adrift.
16:52 Hamilton takes the purple honours in the middle sector.
16:51 Sebastian Vettel goes purple through the first sector on the opening runs.
16:49 Charles Leclerc is the only man in the top ten that has not appeared on track for an early run.
16:46 Charles Leclerc was best of the rest in Q2, with Romain Grosjean, Nico Hulkenberg and the two Force Indias also getting through to the final part of qualifying.
16:44 It looks to be a four-horse race, considering how far Daniel Ricciardo was off the pace of the top four in Q2. Or do Red Bull have more in the tank?
16:43 Kimi Raikkonen was fastest, ahead of his team-mate Sebastian Vettel and the two Mercedes.
16:42 Pierre Gasly, Brendon Hartley and Max Verstappen did not set a time in Q2, and also drop out the session.
16:41 Carlos Sainz and Kevin Magnussen are the two men to drop out of Q2, with Sainz just 0.002s behind his Renault team-mate Nico Hulkenberg.
16:40 The chequered flag comes out to end the second part of qualifying. Seven cars battling for five places right now.
16:38 Daniel Ricciardo will not come out again in Q2, so the Australian will start on the (SS), if he gets through. He only has five tenths of a second for safety.
16:37 The two Mercedes come back out on track on the (US) tyres.
16:34 FIVE MINUTES TO GO IN Q2: RAI VET HAM BOT RIC LEC GRO PER OCO HUL Drop Zone: Sainz, Magnussen, Gasly (No Time), Hartley (No Time), Verstappen (No Time)
16:33 The Brit puts in a 1:33.4, still four tenths slower than Vettel.
16:31 Surprisingly, Hamilton goes again on the same set of tyres..
16:30 Raikkonen - 1:32.8 (US) Vettel - 1:33.0 (SS) Bottas - 1:33.7 (SS) Hamilton - 1:34.0 (SS) Ferrari have the early edge in Q2.
16:26 Both Mercedes have gone out on the (SS), as has Sebastian Vettel. Meanwhile, Kimi Raikkonen has gone out on the (US).
16:25 A reminder that the tyres used in this session will be the starting tyre for the grand prix, for those that make it through to Q2. So will it be the (SS) or (US)..
16:24 Two Mercedes, two Ferraris, two Red Bulls to finish in Q1.. Will it be a five way battle for pole as we go on, with the lack of a certain Dutchman..
16:20 So, through to Q2 are: HAM BOT VET RAI RIC VER GAS OCO SAI GRO HUL MAG LEC PER HAR But.. Verstappen (suspension) and the two Toro Rossos (penalties) are not expected to run in Q2..
16:20 END OF Q1: Alonso, Sirotkin, Stroll, Ericsson and Vandoorne the five men out of the first part of qualifying.
16:18 Esteban Ocon goes into P7 Fernando Alonso can only make P13...
16:18 The chequered flag is out to end Q1, but there are 14 cars out on track trying to make it into Q2.
16:16 There is a huge line of traffic coming towards the start/finish line, as the midfield runners look to improve on their time.
16:15 Verstappen's right rear suspension failed after that tyre went over the sausage kerbs on the outside of Turn 15.
16:13 FIVE MINUTES TO GO IN Q1: HAM BOT VET RAI RIC VER GRO SAI GAS PER HUL MAG OCO LEC HAR Drop Zone: Alonso, Sirotkin, Ericsson, Vandoorne, Stroll
16:13 Max Verstappen looks to be out of the session, as his right rear suspension looks broken.
16:12 Grosjean goes P6 at the end of the lap, ahead of Daniel Ricciardo's Red Bull.
16:11 Romain Grosjean puts in the fastest first sector of the session on his first flying lap.
16:09 Valtteri Bottas goes P1 with a 1:34.5, but is immediately knocked down into P2 by Lewis Hamilton, with the Brit posting a 1:34.1.
16:08 Max Verstappen goes P3, just two tenths off the Ferrari pace.
16:06 Well, well, well.. Track limits are coming into play in qualifying at Turn 19. Pierre Gasly's first lap time has been deleted as a consequence.
16:05 Kimi puts in a 1:34.9, but is immediately beaten by Sebastian Vettel.
16:04 Hartley - 1:36.943 Gasly - 1:36.457 The Frenchman goes fastest in the early running.
16:02 Eight cars on track so far, with both Saubers, Ferraris, Toro Rossos and Williams out on track.
16:01 Toro Rosso team-mate Pierre Gasly follows him out, with both knowing they will be starting on the back row of the grid, having taken power unit and gearbox penalties for this grand prix.
16:00 Brendon Hartley is the first man out on track this afternoon.
15:57 A reminder of the three dry tyres available for this weekend. Ultrasofts (US) are expected to be the tyre of choice, but the supersofts (SS) and softs (S) are also in use in Texas.
15:54 The engine cover is currently off Kimi Raikkonen's Ferrari, could there be an issue for the Finn?
15:51 It looks set to be a dry qualifying for the United States GP, and that could mean that the ultimate lap record around COTA gets broken this afternoon. Lewis Hamilton's 1:33.108 is the mark from last year.
15:48 The two Red Bulls look like they will be in a little battle of their own after the qualifying sims, while the best of the rest battle could be tightly contested.
15:42 The two Finns were also in the top four in FP3, with Kimi Raikkonen just 0.03s behind his Ferrari team-mate. Bottas was fourth, but seven tenths behind. However, the Mercedes man produced his fastest time on the supersofts, compared to the rest on the ultrasofts.
15:38 Lewis Hamilton was fastest in both sessions on Friday in the pouring rain at COTA, and a pole position start for tomorrow could be the first step to wrapping up the Championship this weekend.
15:35 However, even if Vettel is quickest in qualifying, he will not be at the front of the grid come Sunday's race in Austin. The German has a three-place grid drop after "failing to slow sufficiently for red flags" in FP1 on Friday morning.
15:32 Sebastian Vettel was fastest on the qualifying simulation programmes in FP3, but he has been fastest in the final practice session nine times in 2019. Only once has he then gone on to take pole position.
15:30 Hello and welcome to our coverage of qualifying at the Circuit of the Americas, ahead of the United States Grand Prix. The session gets underway in thirty minutes time. All times shown are local
14:05 Join us in just under an hour and a half for our coverage of qualifying in Austin, as the twenty cars battle it out for their grid slots for Sunday's race. Bye for now.
14:03 Sebastian Vettel tops FP3 for the ninth time in 2018, but only once has he gone on to take pole position from those. He cannot take pole today, thanks to the penalty, but he needs to take top spot in qualifying come the end of Saturday.
13:58 Lewis Hamilton moves into P3, just 0.073s behind Vettel.
13:58 Brendon Hartley spins at the penultimate turn, put quickly gets his Toro Rosso back on track.
13:57 Max Verstappen improves his time, now within a second of Sebastian Vettel's session-leading 1:33.7.
13:56 Only Pierre Gasly is in the pits, with the other 19 out on track for the final few minutes.
13:52 Bottas is the only man of the top six to have set his fastest time on the (SS) tyres, with the (US) being the preferred tyre so far.
13:50 Just ten more minutes of running before the all-important qualifying session later on today. Ten to go in FP3.
13:46 Hamilton's next go on the (US) only puts him into P4, 0.004s behind team-mate Valtteri Bottas.
13:43 Vettel: 1:33.7 Raikkonen: +0.046s Bottas: +0.759s Verstappen: +1.197s Ricciardo: +1.301s Hamilton: +1.410s That is the top six as it stands in FP3.
13:42 Ricciardo fits into the top five, before Vettel goes fastest with a 1:33.7.
13:41 Raikkonen goes quicker once more, into the 1:33s, with Max Verstappen 1.1s behind him on his first quick lap.
13:38 Lewis Hamilton's first quick lap is seven tenths slower than the Flying Finn...
13:33 Valtteri Bottas goes third fastest, just 0.137s behind Kimi Raikkonen's leading time. However, the Ferraris were on the (US), while Bottas posted that lap time on the (SS).
13:31 FERNANDO ALONSO IS THE QUICKEST MAN IN THE SPEED TRAP AT THE MOMENT!!! 320.9kph for the Spaniard down the back straight.
13:27 Vettel closes the gap to his team-mate, putting in a 1:34.5.
13:25 Kimi Raikkonen goes quicker, putting in a 1:34.4 to go 1.1s ahead of Vettel.
13:22 Raikkonen and Vettel still lead the way in FP3, the pair separated by less than half a tenth. However, they are the only two of the top six that have put in a qualifying sim so far (we think).
13:17 Fernando Alonso and Valtteri Bottas are having a right go at it on this lap, with the Spaniard getting past the Finn in Turn 1, before the Mercedes man got back past him into Turn 2.
13:15 15 MINUTES INTO FP3: RAI VET OCO VAN VER RIC PER STR ALO GRO HAM BOT HUL LEC MAG GAS SAI SIR ERI HAR A reminder that all the drivers are running different programmes at the moment.
13:13 Esteban Ocon puts in a 1:36.8 to slot his Force India into P3, while Brendon Hartley becomes the last man to set a time.
13:11 Brendon Hartley reports back to his team saying that something hit his head down the back straight. It looks like the trim from the halo device has just flown off, but the Kiwi is alright and continues.
13:08 Max Verstappen locks up going into Turn 1 and runs wide. Not a good start to the session for the Dutchman.
13:07 The two Ferraris have gone out on the (US) so they could be on their qualifying sims early on in this session. Meanwhile, it looks like the Red Bulls and Mercedes are doing their long runs to start with in this programme.
13:05 Kimi Raikkonen - 1:35.514 Sebastian Vettel - 1:35.553 Close between the two Ferraris early on in FP3.
13:04 Immediately, Fernando Alonso goes into the 1:38s, before Kimi Raikkonen breaks into the 1:35s.
13:02 A 1:42.4 is the first lap put in by Charles Leclerc.
13:00 And we do have cars on track immediately. Leclerc, Hartley, Sainz, Ericsson, Magnussen, Alonso, Gasly and Raikkonen straight out of the pit lane.
13:00 FP3 IS UNDERWAY! Hopefully it will not be 35 minutes before we see a car on track this time round, for those of you who were with us yesterday afternoon.
12:57 The three dry tyres available for this weekend are the yellow-striped soft (S), red-striped supersoft (SS) and purple-striped ultrasoft (US).
12:53 This session should see at least two types of runs. All the drivers will look to do at least one race pace run, and a qualifying sim, as this will be the first dry running.
12:50 With ten minutes to go until FP3, can Lewis Hamilton continue his form in Austin? He topped every session in 2017, and he has the first two in the bag in 2018 as well.
12:46 The penalty essentially gives Lewis Hamilton a free run to the World Championship crown, should he have no mechanical problems. With Vettel only able to qualify in P4 at best, Valtteri Bottas could be playing the bridesmaid role once more come Sunday.
12:43 Ironically, the red flags were caused by his 2019 team-mate Charles Leclerc. The Monegasque man had brought gravel onto the wet track, and while the stewards admitted that Vettel did slow down, he did not slow down to the allotted delta, and was therefore given the penalty.
12:41 The big news from Friday's action was that Sebastian Vettel was given a three-place grid drop by the stewards for failing to slow sufficiently under the red flags.
12:38 The weather looks better for FP3, and the teams will want to get out early to get as much running as possible across the hour.
12:35 The Brit excelled in the wet conditions yesterday, but only did ten laps across the three hours of running, due to the limited sets of wet weather tyres available across a race weekend.
12:33 Lewis Hamilton comes into Saturday having finished top in both practice sessions on Friday, and by some distance.
12:30 Hello and welcome back to the Circuit of The Americas for qualifying day in Austin, Texas. First up is final practice which begins in 30 minutes. All times are local.
10:58 Now Hamilton is top of the pile with a 1:47.502, 1.3 seconds quicker than Bottas and Verstappen.
10:52 Hamilton's first timed lap is a 1:50.015, which puts him P3 on the leaderboard.
10:49 Track is clear again with 40 minutes of the session remaining.
10:45 And by marshals on track, we mean big trucks with big blowers. We are in America after all...
10:40 Red flag! It's nothing major, however. Leclerc's off saw a lot of gravel spill out onto the track, so the marshals are going to have a quick tidy up.
10:38 We have our first off and it's Leclerc who has found the gravel trap. A reminder that the track is still not dry enough yet to start properly pushing the car.
10:35 Just a sight-seeing lap for Vettel, four seconds down on new pace-setter Bottas in P7. 1:48.806 the new marker.
10:33 Bottas pops himself into P2, in between the two Red Bulls. Vettel is out on a 'flying' lap right now.
10:29 The flip-flopping continues as Ricciardo drops into 1:49 benchmark.
10:28 Verstappen finds another eight tenths to re-take top spot.
10:27 And now Ricciardo leapfrogs him again with a 1:51.512.
10:25 Oooh, timed laps on the board. Verstappen sticks up a 1:53.644 with Ricciardo 1.6 seconds slower in P2.
10:22 The Red bull boys are coming out to play. Ricciardo and Verstappen are both out on track with the inters helping clear some more water.
10:20 Ferrari are trialling a new floor in Austin which contains plenty of little fins on the bargeboard areas. Apt, then, that the Finn is going to test it out. Raikkonen's team-mate Vettel has the old floor on for now.
10:13 The only driver on track at the moment is Nico Hulkenberg. He is on the inters, though, suggesting the track is starting to dry out a little bit. If the rain stays away there could be a flurry of activity towards the end of the session.
10:06 A few install laps have been completed, among the next to head out for theirs are the Mercedes duo of Valtteri Bottas and some chap called Lewis Hamilton.
10:03 And out comes Norris, Hulkenberg, Magnussen and Gelael to join the Swede.
10:00 Green lights. Marcus Ericsson the first to head out of the garage with the full wet tyres strapped on.
09:55 The rain almost looks like it is thinking about stopping for a while, which would be nice. But, there is a lot of standing water to clear first.
09:50 Persistent rain is set to fall at COTA for the next couple of days, with qualifying day on Saturday predicted to be the worst. If some reports are to be believed, qualifying could be pushed back until Sunday morning, where a dry day is expected.
09:47 Nicholas Latifi was pencilled in to replace Esteban Ocon at Force India, but the bad weather means Ocon is back in with track time at a premium today.
09:45 A couple of reserve drivers are booked in for the FP1 session in Austin. Sean Gelael will drive for Toro Rosso and Lando Norris is in the McLaren ahead of his 2019 drive.
09:40 Hamilton has insisted he is not thinking about the title heading into the latest weekend of action, but there is simply no better place for him to try and clinch that fifth title. He has won five out of the six races held at the Circuit of The Americas.
09:35 Is this the weekend that Lewis Hamilton will bag his fifth World Championship title? With a 67-point lead and just four races to go, he needs to outscore Sebastian Vettel by eight points or more in Austin to seal the deal.
09:30 Welcome to the Circuit of the Americas, home of the United States F1 Grand Prix. All times are local.
