28 Jul 16:25 Verstappen leads by almost 10 seconds over Bottas.
28 Jul 16:23 Verstappen leads from Bottas, Hulkenberg in the Renault and Hamilton.

28 Jul 16:19 Stewards hand Hamilton a five-second timed penalty for being the wrong side of the bollard at pit entry.
28 Jul 16:17 Track green, 30 laps to go.
28 Jul 16:15 SC in on this lap and we're still catching our breath.

28 Jul 16:01 Verstappen pits from P3 and takes on medium tyres. Let's see how he goes.
28 Jul 15:58 Vettel pits for slick tyres.
FINISH Well, I for one, need to lie down. What an unbelievable race; overtakes, crashes, changing conditions - it really had everything. At the end of it, Verstappen got another win, Vettel got a nice 18 points and Mercedes got none. Not a bad way to end the first half of the season, eh? We have one more race before the summer break, and it's the Hungarian Grand Prix next weekend. Even it's even half as good as today, I'll be happy. See you there.
FINISH Hamilton, Kubica and Russell finished outside the points. Everybody else retired.
FINISH The Alfa Romeo and Haas boys complete the top ten.
FINISH Stroll finishes an excellent P4 ahead of Sainz and Albon.
FINISH Vettel comes home P2, ahead of Daniil Kvyat!
FINISH Max Verstappen wins the German Grand Prix!
Lap 63 Vettel passes Kvyat for P2 now! What a race from the German!
Lap 63 Gasly is out! He hits Albon trying to pass.
Lap 62 Vettel passes Stroll and moves up to P3!
Lap 61 DRS enabled...
Lap 60 Albon passes Gasly. Are you watching, Helmut?
Lap 60 Vettel passes Sainz for P4! Next up is Stroll.
Lap 59 SC ending.
Lap 59 Sainz and Vettel will be all over the Racing Point at the restart.
Lap 59 So, eh, it looks like the podium is going to be Verstappen, Kvyat, Stroll. Right.
Lap 58 Bottas is out! He spins into the barriers and beaches his car. Oh my word. Safety car.
Lap 57 Ah, the Haas boys have come together. Gunther Steiner will be chuffed I'm sure.
Lap 55 Surely we're not going to have Kvyat and Stroll both on the podium? This is real life, not a video game.
Lap 55 Kvyat looks likes he's going to get P2 here, as Stroll is holding up Bottas, Sainz and Vettel.
Lap 54 Hamilton pits, and is now last.
Lap 52 Hamilton goes off at the first corner! He's now only ahead of the Willaims cars. I am of course very unbiased, but... Haha.
Lap 51 Kvyat is flying and passes Stroll for P2! Get him in that Red Bull!
Lap 49 Hamilton, with a five-second penalty in the pits, has dropped down to P12. That final podium spot is up for grabs for a midfield runner.
Lap 48 Not for long though, as Verstappen passes him to take the lead again!
Lap 48 The rest come in, meaning Lance Stroll, who pitted early for slicks, leads the race, No, really.
Lap 47 Drivers all pitting for dry tyres now! Hamilton and Vettel stay out, but the rest of the front runners came in.
Lap 46 Sainz passes Albon for P4 and almost gets Hamilton!
Lap 46 Verstappen gets away well, while Vettel sweeps around the outside to move up to P8.
Lap 45 How are these last 20 laps going to play out? F*** knows. Safety Car ending.
Lap 43 Vettel too comes in and goes onto inters, courtesy of a mediocre stop. He's in P10 now.
Lap 42 Verstappen pits under the Safety Car to go onto inters and maintains the lead.
Lap 41 No! Hulkenberg is out! He hits the barriers at the final corner. A crushing blow for the German. The Safety Car is out.
Lap 40 Verstappen sets the fastest lap of the race, building his lead to nine seconds.
Lap 39 Hamilton passes Hulkenberg and moves into P3. Hang in there, Nico.
Lap 38 It's raining again. Dear god.
Lap 37 Bottas passes Hulkenberg, who now has Hamilton all over him.
Lap 37 As Hulkenberg fends off Bottas, Verstappen is seven seconds clear at the front.
Lap 36 The Brit has passed Albon but is under investigation for driving too slowly under the Safety Car.
Lap 35 Hamilton has a five-second penalty for entering the pit-lane too late, missing the legal entry.
Lap 34 Verstappen gets away well, while Hamilton is stuck behind Albon still and Vettel passes Gasly.
Lap 33 Safety Car coming in.
Lap 32 I don't want to get you guys excited, but Hulk is P2 and looking good. Who wouldn't love him to get a podium?
Lap 32 Under the safety car still, Hamilton is down to P5 behind Verstappen, Hulkenberg, Bottas and Albon. Vettel is P8.
Lap 30 Bottas was leading but pits for inters, putting Verstappen into the lead ahead of Hulkenberg.
Lap 30 Hamilton has gone off! The Brit damages his wing badly and pits for a new one, but his crew aren't ready. He's stuck in the pits for just under a minute!
Lap 30 Under the Safety Car that followed, Vettel has pitted for intermediate tyres. This is carnage.
Lap 30 Leclerc is out! It was all going perfectly for him, but the Ferrari man lost it and went flying into the barriers. He's gutted.
Lap 29 Hamilton pits as the VSC ends. He goes onto softs.
Lap 28 The VSC is out, and Leclerc pits to go onto soft tyres, coming out ahead of Bottas and in P2.
Lap 28 Stroll too spins, while Norris has retired due to a loss of power.
Lap 27 Cars coming in left, right and centre to go onto dry tyres now. Bottas goes onto mediums and comes out comfortably ahead of Verstappen, as the Dutchman spins.
Lap 26 Verstappen pits! Can he do the undercut on Bottas? He goes on to medium tyres.
Lap 24 Vettel coming in for soft tyres too.
Lap 23 Haas though, have put Magnussen on the soft tyre. Let's see what his pace is like...
Lap 22 The rain is back!
Lap 20 Hamilton six seconds clear of Bottas, who is just over a second ahead of Verstappen. Leclerc is quickly catching, though.
Lap 19 Sainz spins! The Spaniard just about manages to stop the car before the barriers though. He's down in P15 now.
Lap 19 Hulkenberg too is enjoying the fresh inters, and takes Raikkonen to move up to P5.
Lap 18 Leclerc, who always went on to fresh inters under the VSC, has gone purple, over three seconds quicker than Hamilton.
Lap 18 Verstappen goes for a move on Bottas and loses the rear end, and a lot of time to Bottas too.
Lap 18 DRS has been enabled - it's pretty dry now...
Lap 17 Hulkenberg pitted under the VSC and therefore only lost one place. He's on the inters.
Lap 15 The Virtual Safety Car is out.
Lap 15 Smoke is flying out of the engine of Daniel Ricciardo, who pulls over and is out of the race.
Lap 14 Ferrari have been given a fine for the unsafe release, but Leclerc gets away without a penalty. Very, very lenient.
Lap 13 Vettel struggling for pace now. He can't catch Raikkonen and is being caught by Sainz. Is it another engine issue for the German?
Lap 11 Bottas saying it's drying up quickly, but more rain is on the radar...
Lap 10 The top three are running away, with Hamilton, in particular, looking strong. A lot can happen before the end though...
Lap 9 Ferrari are under investigation for an unsafe release for Leclerc, who came out right in front of Grosjean. Expect a penalty...
Lap 8 Raikkonen and Vettel both past Magnussen, and will now battle for P6.
Lap 7 Vettel meanwhile is up to P8.
Lap 6 Leclerc takes the Haas to move up to P4. Hulkenberg then follows suit.
Lap 5 We're away again! Bottas passes Magnussen for P2 immediately, and Verstappen follows soon after.
Lap 4 The safety car is coming in...
Lap 4 Everbody in except Magnussen, Stroll, Norris and the Williams cars.
Lap 3 Many drivers coming in for inters, including Vettel. Hamilton is set to do so too.
Lap 3 Sergio Perez is out of the race! He span and hit the barriers, bringing up a full safety car.
Lap 2 Verstappen has got Raikkonen and moved back up to P3.
Lap 2 Leclerc is up to P6 while Vettel is P14.
Lap 1 And we're off! A poor start for Verstappen, who drops down to P4, behind Bottas and Raikkonen. Hamilton leads.
14:19 The cars are lining up on the grid...
14:18 We're going to have a standing start! This will be fun.
14:17 Is this the longest formation lap ever?
14:16 We're still going around behind the safety car as the FIA try to decide what to do. Magnussen and Verstappen have both been on the radio calling for a normal start.
14:10 Every car is out on the wet tyres. The formation lap is underway - if after driving around, the safety car driver deems the track safe, we can have a standing start.
14:07 Looks like it will be a safety car start. That's disappointing, but perhaps fair enough. Perhaps.
14:01 The formation lap will take place behind the safety car, but we should still have a standing start...
13:56 We've just had the national anthem - ten minutes until lights out...
13:53 Giovinazzi: "I think a safety car start would be a bit safer". Yes, Antonio, that's why it's called a safety car...
13:51 Russell: "It's very slippery, it'll be a tricky couple of laps, but I'm all for a standing start."
13:50 Worth noting that this is the first wet race of the season, meaning the teams are clueless when it comes to data, while some drivers, such as Lando Norris, have never even driven an F1 car in the wet.
13:40 It looks like the rain will stay with us throughout the race, which will be music to the ears of Sebastian Vettel. His season fell apart in the rain here last year - can he banish his demons today?
13:34 I'm pleased to say that the grid is full of umbrellas as we speak, with the rain pelting down. It'll definitely be a wet start - the only question is whether teams elect for intermediates tyres or full wets.
13:31 The rest of the grid for today is GIO, MAG, RIC, KVY, STR, ALB, RUS, KUB, NOR, VET.
13:29 Completing the top ten is the Renault of Nico Hulkenberg, who has Charles Leclerc right behind him after the Monegasque's Q3 woes.
13:28 Carlos Sainz starts P7, while Sergio Perez officially won the season's qualifying battle with team-mate Lance Stroll, now leading 10-0. He starts P8.
13:21 Kimi Raikkonen won the midfield battle yesterday and starts P5, with Romain Grosjean also putting in a much needed strong performance to start P6.
13:18 Their team-mates fill up the second row, with Valtteri Bottas starting ahead of Pierre Gasly, who's starting in his highest ever grid position.
13:15 As is so often the case, Lewis Hamilton was the one to pick up the pieces, taking pole position ahead of Max Verstappen. With rain looking likely, that is quite the front row.
13:05 Well, yesterday was yet another catastrophe for Ferrari. The Prancing Horse looked set to take pole position, but the hopes of both drivers were scuppered due to engine issues. Vettel was unable to do any laps, thus starting P20 today, while Leclerc managed to make it to Q3 before his issues, so he starts P10.
12:32 Whilst it continues to tip it down at the Hockenheimring, there is some late grid penalty news. Lando Norris joins Vettel on the back row after taking new a MGU-K, battery and Control Electronics. New Control Electronics too for Vettel which has also incurred a penalty, but he's already starting at the back after Saturday's qualifying disaster.
09:00 Hello wherever you are in the world. It is German Grand Prix day at the Hockenheimring and we are in for what could be a thriller. Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen make up the front row, Sebastian Vettel is at the very back and will have to cut his way through the traffic and there is rain on its way. Tune in at 2:30pm local time for the build-up to the German GP.
16:08 Well, as has so often been the case this season, Ferrari had the quickest car today, but reliability let them down. They have a hell of a job on their hands to get a podium tomorrow, but seeing them make their way up the grid from P10 and P20 will be entertaining regardless. Throw in a bit of rain and Verstappen on the front row, and we could be in for a cracker. See you there, 14:00 local time.
16:06 The full grid for tomorrow, barring any penalties, is HAM, VER, BOT, GAS, RAI, GRO, SAI, PER, HUL, LEC, GIO, MAG, RIC, KVY, STR, NOR, ALB, KUB, VET.
16:02 Raikkonen meanwhile takes P5, marginally behind Gasly.
16:01 The Brit can't improve, but neither can Bottas and Verstappen, meaning Hamilton is on pole for the 87th time!
15:58 Hamilton the first man out for the final run.
15:56 Grosjean is currently the best of the rest, which now means P5.
15:52 Verstappen has split the Mercedes cars.
15:52 Bottas does a 1:12.222, Hamilton a 1:11.767, but the big news is that Leclerc is out of his car and out of qualifying. What a disaster for Ferrari today.
15:49 Leclerc's car is being surrounded in the garage as work is being done, monitored by an FIA steward. Oh no...
15:49 We have green lights for Q3, with the Silver Arrows leading the way.
15:42 Q2 is over, with GIO, MAG, RIC, KVY and STR the drivers out. 0.33s separated P8 to P13.
15:41 Raikkonen, Perez and Hulkenberg all improve to make Q3, knocking out Giovinazzi, Magnussen and Ricciardo.
15:38 He does a 1:12.4 to go P4, but is still not happy with his car.
15:35 Verstappen back out. It looks like he won't suffer the same fate as Vettel.
15:34 Just over five minutes left, and the bottom five are HUL, KVY, RIC, STR, VER.
15:33 His team-mate meanwhile has gone P3, ahead of Bottas.
15:32 Verstappen reporting a loss of power on the straight. He's heading to the pits...
15:31 Leclerc goes P2, just under two tenths down.
15:29 Hamilton does a 1:12.149 on the medium tyre to go top.
15:27 Well, what a shocking Q1 that was. Vettel out without setting a time, and Lance Stroll not in the drop zone! The Canadian has made it to Q2 for the first time in a long, long while. The session is now underway.
15:20 The chequered flag is waving. Out of Q1 are NOR, ALB, RUS, KUB, VET.
15:19 Giovinazzi goes P8, pushing Norris down.
15:17 Norris scrapes out of the bottom five, but only just. He's probably out.
15:15 Hamilton goes P3. Drop zone is currently ALB, NOR, KUB, RUS, VET.
15:14 Vettel getting out of the car, meaning heâ??s out of qualifying. Itâ??s another disaster for the German at his home Grand Prix.
15:13 P4 for Bottas, behind Kim Raikkonen. Still no sign of Vettel with five minutes to go...
15:11 Lewis Hamilton only goes P13. Heâ??ll have to go around again.
15:09 Leclerc does a 1:12.229 to go top, three tenths clear of Verstappen.
15:07 Vettel reporting a loss of power, and is heading into the pits. Hopefully just a temporary issue...
15:06 Raikkonen goes top with a 1:13.066.
15:04 We have green lights, with the Williams cars the first out.
14:50 As it stands, none of the drivers has any grid penalties today, so barring any incidents, they'll line-up exactly as they qualify for the race tomorrow.
14:45 It's currently a warm 27'C in Hockenheim, but grey clouds are lingering and thunderstorms are forecast in the next few hours.
14:40 Mercedes meanwhile have struggled at their home race and will be hoping for rain in the next two days. It looks like they may well get their wish...
14:37 It's been a weekend dominated by Ferrari so far, with the Italian outfit topping every session. Verstappen has been the only other driver to crack the front row.
14:30 Hello and welcome to Planet F1's live coverage of qualifying for the 2019 German Grand Prix! All times are local.
13:02 That's it for FP3, join us in two hours for qualifying. Cheers.
13:01 Leclerc is P1 by 0.168s ahead of Verstappen with Vettel third.
13:00 The chequered flag is out on FP3...
12:58 After Friday's complaints Magnussen has plenty to smile about today as he is up to fifth, 0.07s quicker than Hamilton. And now Raikkonen has had a lap time deleted.
12:56 Hamilton has done a second flying lap that has put him up to sixth place.
12:53 Grosjean is not a happy chappy and he reports "engine issue, engine issue" and is told to slow down by the Haas team. Grosjean is still lapping, though, with Haas saying they will "check" what is going on.
12:51 Vettel has had a lap delete, again, and now Hamilton too. He drops back to P7.
12:50 Hamilton's turn and it is a hot one... he goes purple in the first sector, green in the second, and green in the third... it is P4 for the championship leader.
12:48 Verstappen puts in a great lap to jump up to second place, splitting the two Ferraris. He is 0.15s down on Leclerc. Gasly goes fifth.
12:47 Verstappen and Gasly head out in formation followed by Kubica and Norris. Hamilton follows them out in his slimmed down W10.
12:44 Now it is Bottas' turn but the Finn does not have an answer to Ferrari's pace. He jumps up to third but is half a second down on Leclerc's P1 time.
12:42 He goes purple in the first sector, green in the second, and only green in the third so he stays second, now 0.257s down on Leclerc.
12:41 Leclerc and Vettel are both back on track with fresh soft tyres on their Ferraris. Great lap from Leclerc, purple in first, second and third sector on his way to a 1:12.3. But here comes Vettel...
12:40 Another driver loses their lap time, this time it is Kvyat who also exceeded the track limits. And so does Albon.
12:39 There is plenty of work going on over at Hamilton's Mercedes garage with the team changing the sidepods on his W10.
12:37 The track temperature is up to 39'C and still no sign of the forecast rain. The action is heating up as well as Albon leaves the garage with a fresh set of soft tyres on his Toro Rosso.
12:36 A moment of quiet before the end of session storm as just five drivers are on the track.
12:33 Great news for Haas as Magnussen reports that he is much happier with his VF19 today, saying it feels like a new car. Guenther Steiner reveals they changed absolutely nothing overnight!
12:32 Some serious tyre cooling going on in the Red Bull garage as the team is blasting ice cold air onto the front tyres.
12:30 Halfway through FP3: Leclerc, Vettel, Verstappen, Hamilton, Raikkonen, Albon, Hulkenberg, Norris, Magnussen and Bottas. The top seven are separated by just under a second.
12:27 Vettel's time of a 1:13.36 was deleted, but that was slower than his best which he keeps, for exceeding track limits.
12:25 Great lap from Albon sees the Toro Rosso driver jump up to fourth place. He is a mere tenth behind Hamilton.
12:24 Verstappen has joined the party, leaving the pits on a set of the medium Pirellis.
12:21 Visitor to the Alfa Romeo garage, it is Mr Peter Sauber, the team's founder!
12:20 Leclerc lays down another hot lap, a 1:12.7 for the Ferrari driver. Hamilton has moved up to third place. His team-mate Vettel is now half a second off the pace in second.
12:17 Hulkenberg has put in a short run that has him up in third place. Nice start to the session for the Renault lad.
12:15 Hamilton goes quickest, Vettel takes over and now it is Leclerc. A 1:13.117.
12:12 As part of Mercedes' retro look there are new old gloves for the drivers. Hamilton isn't impressed. "Just give me normal gloves, normal gloves. They won't fit."
12:11 A moment for Bottas as he gets it wrong at Turn 2 and runs wide. He caught the inside kerb and was pushed wide.
12:09 Ricciardo does a 1:50.0 with Sainz topping that with a 1:14.1. And with that more drivers take to the track.
12:07 Ricciardo breaks the silence as he leaves the pits in his Renault with McLaren's Sainz following him out.
12:06 All of five drivers - Magnussen, Albon, Grosjean, Norris and Kubica - have been out.
12:03 Mercedes have taken this 125 years celebration to new levels today with the mechanics decked out with braces and flat caps. Looking rather sauve.
12:00 Green light and Magnussen leads the field out for installation laps.
11:56 The bottom half of Friday's timesheet: 11 Carlos Sainz McLaren 1.213s: 12 Daniil Kvyat Toro Rosso 1.351s: 13 Daniel Ricciardo Renault 1.561s: 14 Alex Albon Toro Rosso 1.613s: 15 Gasly Red Bull 1.640s: 16 Lando Norris McLaren 1.798s: 17 Antonio Giovinazzi Alfa Romeo Racing 1.957s: 18 Kevin Magnussen Haas 2.021s: 19 Russell Williams 3.451s: 20 Kubica Williams 3.531s.
11:52 Air temperature is 25'C and the track is 34 as we await the start of FP3.
11:45 The rest of Friday's top ten: 5 Max Verstappen Red Bull 0.684s; 6 Romain Grosjean Haas 0.730s; 7 Lance Stroll Racing Point 0.819s; 8 Kimi Raikkonen Alfa Romeo Racing 1.009s; 9 Nico Hulkenberg Renault 1.023s; 10 Sergio Perez Racing Point 1.069s.
11:41 The heat aided Ferrari on Friday with Vettel and Charles Leclerc topping the practice sessions. Although perhaps it would be best to say the heat hampered Mercedes. The W10's tight packaging and cooling system means it not a fan of the heat. Despite that Lewis Hamilton was only 0.146s down. Valtteri Bottas was half a second behind his team-mate.
11:38 The good news for all the drivers, teams and fans at the circuit is that it is cooler in Hockenheim today than it was yesterday. Today's high is 28'C compared to Friday's 37. There is a chance of rain during qualifying. Not a massive downpour but enough to possible trip up the drivers - just ask Sebastian Vettel.
11:33 Williams have also confirmed that George Russell, who ran the old spec in Friday's practice, is taking the new stuff - which include a new floor and bargeboard - as of FP3.
11:30 News in this morning: Williams have switch Robert Kubica to spare chassis. "We found some damage while rebuilding Robert's car overnight which was not repairable at the track," the team revealed. He's not the only driver with a new chassis this morning as Red Bull were forced to change Pierre Gasly's after his massive FP2 crash.
07:00 Good morning and welcome back to the Hockenheimring for Saturday's third and final practice for the German GP. All times are local and today's action kicks off at noon.
16:35 Both Mercedes and Ferrari are looking quick, but the conditions are set to change drastically for Saturday, it will be interesting to see what that does to the order. Join us then for FP3.
16:31 P11 Sainz, P12 Kvyat, P13 Ricciardo, P14 Albon, P15 Gasly, P16 Norris, P17 Giovinazzi, P18 Magnussen, P19 Russell and P20 Kubica completes the order.
16:30 FP2 comes to a close, the top 10 is as follows: P1 Leclerc, P2 Vettel, P3 Hamilton, P4 Bottas, P5 Verstappen, P6 Grosjean, P7 Stroll, P8 Raikkonen, P9 Hulkenberg and P10 Perez.
16:25 Nico Hulkenberg gets wheeled back into the garage. A solid afternoons work for the Renault driver who holds P9 with 5 minutes to go.
16:21 Nine minutes to go and the session restarts.
16:16 Huge huge accident for Gasly as he smashes into the wall at the start of the main straight. He appears to be okay.
16:11 Ferrari just dropped Leclerc's SF90 off the front jack. Good job it's practice because that would prove very costly in the race.
16:05 Bottas goes for a trip onto the run-off area. If those softs are burning out already then it's a good job the race will be cooler.
16:01 Drivers heading into a bit of race sim now. What we have seen so far is that Mercedes and Ferrari look very evenly matched over one-lap pace.
15:59 Gasly down in P15. After his strongest showing in 2019 at Silverstone he will hope not to end up back at square one.
15:53 Kimi says "it's unreal these people" after getting blocked by what appeared to be a Haas.
15:47 The Dutchman is told to box, it isn't something he can fix himself.
15:46 Bottas' time is over six tenths slower than Leclerc on the softs. Meanwhile Verstappen is complaining of "no power", but quickly says "it's working now".
15:44 Hamilton sets the fastest final sector of the session but crosses the line just over a tenth down on Leclerc.
15:43 P1 for Leclerc despite traffic. Both Ferraris are looking on it.
15:38 Seb bolts on the softs and goes P1 but he dropped off in the last sector. Perhaps it's the heat taking that grip away by the end of the lap? Either way, it's not likely to matter much in the cooler conditions on Saturday and Sunday.
15:36 Lance Stroll is having none of that, but he has to settle for P3, 0.19s down on Hamilton.
15:33 May be on the softs but Romain Grosjean has just gone P2. Well there's a time from the Frenchman!
15:32 Verstappen locks up at the hairpin on his latest flying lap attempt. He's P4 currently and splitting the Ferraris.
15:29 Hamilton goes fastest by nearly fourth tenths of a second, it was a rapid final sector.
15:26 Verstappen stakes his claim for P3, meanwhile Leclerc is out on a set of used hards and is struggling for grip.
15:24 A few microphone issues for Hamilton, unlikely to cause him too many problems.
15:21 Third fastest for Valtteri, three tenths shy. Not a bad effort on a traffic-effected lap.
15:20 Hamilton goes fastest, also on the medium compound, but only by a tenth. Bottas is out running the hard tyres.
15:16 Pierre Gasly goes P3 with his first attempt on the mediums.
15:14 Charles Leclerc pumps in a 1:14.569 to go P1 while Vettel slots into P2 two tenths behind.
15:10 Kimi Raikkonen moves into P1 with a 1:15.1 on the mediums.
15:04 Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean set early times, split by Lando Norris. Who knows, if it rains tomorrow in qualifying that could end up as the top three.
15:00 On goes the green light, FP2 is underway.
14:56 Williams are rather proud of their upgrades and Robert Kubica finished FP1 within two tenths of Antonio Giovinazzi. It's time to see if the progress continues.
14:50 Carlos Sainz finished atop the best-of-the-rest battle in FP1 despite McLaren's worries over slow-speed corners. It will be interesting to see if he stays there in FP2.
14:44 Max Verstappen was again in the mix for Red Bull, but the x-factor remains what Mercedes can do when the softs go on, especially with the weather continuing to hot up.
14:38 Sebastian Vettel headed a Ferrari one-two in FP1, though they ran the soft compound while Mercedes stuck with the mediums.
14:30 Hello and welcome to FP2 coverage here at the German Grand Prix. All times are local.
12:31 That's it for now, join us in two hours for FP2 for the German GP. Cheers.
12:30 The chequered flag is out on FP1 with a P1 for Vettel. Is this the beginning of the German's recovery at his home track? The tifosi will be hoping the answer is yet.
12:29 And Ricciardo has had a spin!
12:29 Yellow flag as Bottas is off the track and in the kitty litter at Turn 13. He locked the front left coming into the corner and just ran right off the track. Not a great end to his session.
12:27 Last minute laps for Vettel as he practices a start on his way out of the pits.
12:26 Bottas is having a bit of fun with the kerbs and that does not look good for his W10's floor as it took a hefty whack.
12:25 Such is F1's midfield battle that Ricciardo, P10 and the final points-paying position if this was a Sunday, is 1.554s off the pace. Raikkonen in 17th is 1.940s down.
12:22 Bottas is told by Mercedes that they can see "overheating at both ends". We are really, really hoping they are referring to the car.
12:19 Good news for Williams is that Kubica in the updated FW42 is ahead of Russell on the timesheets. He is 0.6s quicker than his team-mate. Alas they are still P19 and P20.
12:16 Verstappen is up to fourth, splitting the Mercedes drivers, while Gasly is P6.
12:11 New P1 as Vettel goes quickest with a 1:14.013.
12:08 With drivers doing extremely slow cool down laps to, well, cool down in the heat, both Hamilton and Raikkonen had near misses as they came up behind others at pace. "The f*** is these people doing," said Raikkonen.
12:05 Leclerc is on a hot lap and is purple in the first two sectors. He goes quickest with a 1:14.2.
12:03 Hamilton responds with purple, purple but then loses time in the final sector so his 1:14.315 stays as the P1 time.
12:02 Bottas has done another lap on the mediums and closes the gap to Hamilton to three-tenths.
12:00 Sainz is up to third on the soft tyres, 0.7s down on Hamilton's P1 time.
11:59 Hamilton shows him how it is done, a 1:14.315 on the mediums for the Brit. He also kicked up a bit of dirt at the final corner but that could have been Bottas' dirt.
11:57 Bottas has swapped the soft tyres for a set of the mediums. His best on the softs was a 1:14.805. His was quicker on the mediums, fastest in the middle sector, but completely botched the final corner and finished slower.
11:55 Grosjean and Bottas join the action as Norris, running the medium tyres, moves up from 14th to seventh.
11:52 Norris also heads out - it is 'bake a rookie' day in Germany!
11:50 Not much of a break for Russell as he's already back on track. Track temperature is up to 45'C.
11:46 The drivers are all back in the pits returning their first set of tyres to Pirelli. While this usually happens at the 40-minute mark, today they were given an extra five minutes because of the earlier red flag.
11:45 Vettel and Hamilton are playing in the traffic with the Ferrari driver giving his Mercedes rival a wave... not a friendly one though.
11:44 Albon is finally out and laying down laps and times. He is P18 after his earlier Halo issue.
11:41 Kvyat is the best non-Mercedes/Ferrari/Red Bull driver up in sixth place, 1.3s down. Hulkenberg, Perez, Stroll and Ricciardo completing the top ten.
11:38 Leclerc splits the Mercedes drivers as he goes P2 on the soft tyres. 0.3s down on Bottas.
11:37 Dirty track, front tyres not working... not a happy Hamilton right now.
11:35 Bottas shaves tenths off his time, a 1:14.805.
11:34 Both Mercedes drivers are on the soft tyres with Verstappen on the mediums. Lelcerc is up to P4 ahead of Vettel.
11:29 Verstappen goes quickest and then loses out to both Mercedes, a 1:14.2 for Bottas.
11:28 First sight of the W10's one-off livery as Bottas takes to the track. Hamilton is also out, it is rather busy on the track now.
11:26 Green light and off we go...
11:24 Magnussen is back in the pits and his Haas team are there to push him the rest of the way down the pit lane. Definitely beats walking in this heat - at least for Magnussen, not so much for the poor mechanics having to push the car now.
11:22 Not exactly Magnussen's fastest ever lap!
11:21 The marshals have arrived to sort out Magnussen's car and give the driver a lift back to the pits. He's getting a tow while he remains in the car.
11:19 He tells Haas that a sensor reported a problem with an alarm and shut the car down.
11:18 Yellow flag and now a red flag as Magnussen has stopped at Turn 13. He's in a dangerous position.
11:17 Norris has been out on the soft tyres but pitted after three laps without a time. Magnussen, Russell and Kubica break the silence.
11:12 Toro Rosso are busy putting a new Halo on Albon's car, apparently there is an issue with the fairing of the one he used on his installation lap.
11:08 Verstappen is back on the track with a different front wing - Red Bull are running back to back tests. Sergio Perez and Lance Stroll has been out and returned to the pits in their updated Racing Point. Perez told PlanetF1 on Thursday that it is not a B-spec car as had been reported, rather "a little upgrade." A little upgrade with a lot of bits!
11:04 Sainz and Gasly clearly want their day's work over with before it gets any hotter. They have both laid down times, a 1:17.9 puts the McLaren driver on top.
11:03 Charles Leclerc, Russell, Romain Grosjean, Hulkenberg, Antonio Giovinazzi and Daniel Ricciardo head out for their installation laps. Just the two Racing Point lads and the Mercedes team-mates still in their garages.
11:02 Over at Williams, Kubica is running the team's upgrades - which include new floor and bargeboard - for both FP1 and FP2 while George Russell is in the same car as what he raced at Silverstone.
11:01 Alexander Albon, Lando Norris, Vettel, Pierre Gasly, Kevin Magnussen, Robert Kubica, Carlos Sainz, Kimi Raikkonen and Daniil Kvyat are all out on track.
11:00 Green light and Verstappen is the first man out...
10:55 Five minutes to the start and the air temperature is up to 32'C and the track, 40'C.
10:49 Vettel isn't the only German competing here this weekend, we also have Nico Hulkenberg who said on Thursday that he is "likely" to remain at Renault next season. Good news for The Hulk as the team were believed to be looking at Esteban Ocon as a possible replacement.
10:46 Both Ferrari and Red Bull will be hoping to benefit from the heat as that is Mercedes' Achilles Heel. Hamilton reckons they will be in "trouble" if the forecast rain doesn't arrive ahead of Sunday's grand prix and break the heat. But then again given that Mercedes have spent most of this year downplaying their form and then racing to wins...
10:41 Sebastian Vettel will be hoping to break his duck this weekend at his home track and make up for last year's lost victory (remember that crash?). And maybe a P1 come Sunday will quash the ever-present rumours about his future and whether he's about to quit F1.
10:35 The Red Bull driver is the only non-Mercedes man to win a grand prix this season, all the other nine have gone to Lewis Hamilton, 7, and Valtteri Bottas, 2. Ferrari have yet to get off the mark.
10:30 F1 arrived at the Hockenheimring expecting heat and heat is exactly what we have today. So much so that Max Verstappen has said he hopes the upgrade to his RB15 is an "AC".
07:00 Good morning and welcome to Hockenheim for what could, unfortunately, be the last German GP for a year or two - or even longer. Friday's action gets underway at 11am local time with the 90-minute FP1 session.
