14 Apr 08:56 Kimi in the pits
FINISH Next up is Azerbaijan in a few weeks - the Baku Street Circuit one which always delivers on drama. See you for that one!
FINISH Well, not a race of may thrills, but a few talking points to come out of it. Ferrari's pace has vanished again. How much more of this team orders saga can Leclerc take? Will that P6 finish and fastest lap finally give Gasly some confidence in the Red Bull?
FINISH P11 Grosjean, P12 Stroll, P13 Magnussen, P14 Sainz, P15 Giovinazzi, P16 Russell and P17 Kubica complete the order. Hulkenberg, Kvyat and Norris the retirements in Formula 1's 1000th GP.
FINISH P4 for Verstappen, Leclerc P5, Gasly takes P6 and an extra point for fastest lap, Ricciardo P7, Perez P8, Raikkonen P9, and a solid effort from Albon, going from a pit-lane start to P10.
FINISH Hamilton wins the Chinese Grand Prix! A third one-two for Mercedes as Bottas takes P2. Vettel completes the podium.
Lap 56 Hamilton sets off on his final tour of the Shanghai International Circuit.
Lap 55 Red Bull stop Gasly to put the softs on, he's going for the fastest lap to snatch that off Vettel.
Lap 54 Norris retires the car, it was over really when Kvyat hit him at the start, hopefully some useful data has been gathered.
Lap 53 Russell and Kubica are having a good battle in the closing stages, the British driver is just ahead right now.
Lap 53 Ferrari tell Leclerc the gearbox is fine.
Lap 52 Meanwhile, Grosjean is closing on Albon looking to spoil his afternoon.
Lap 52 Leclerc having a problem with the gears. His pace has dropped off.
Lap 50 Albon looks good for P10, a stunning performance.
Lap 47 A solid run for Ricciardo in P7, but Perez and Raikkonen are not far behind.
Lap 46 Norris sheds his tag of the bottom driver, passing Kubica for P17.
Lap 45 Leclerc has 14 seconds to make up to Verstappen on his fresh tyres with 11 laps to go.
Lap 43 Kvyat's quite miserable Chinese GP comes to an end on lap 43, Toro Rosso wheel him back into the garage.
Lap 43 Vettel makes the move passed his team-mate on the back straight, Leclerc dives into the pits and fits the mediums. Not a tidy getaway from the pit box.
Lap 42 Ferrari are consigning Leclerc to P5 at this rate, if they are going to pit him they have to do it soon or he could end up a sitting duck for Verstappen.
Lap 40 He gets him down the back straight, Bottas is back into P2.
Lap 39 Bottas is all over Leclerc, he is 3 seconds a lap faster but the youngster is making that Ferrari wider than a bus.
Lap 38 Vettel takes the point off Bottas as it stands with a new fastest lap.
Lap 37 Mercedes call in Hamilton and Bottas, they double-stack them to perfection. Out go the pair of them on mediums.
Lap 36 Vettel reacts straight away, the mediums go on his SF90 and he comes out well ahead of Verstappen.
Lap 35 Verstappen pits and bolts on the mediums, a rapid 2.3s pit stop. They are looking to pull another undercut on Ferrari.
Lap 34 Some positive news for Leclerc, it only took 34 laps, he is taking a second a lap out of Verstappen and is now a mere 3.5s shy of the P4 man.
Lap 30 Ferrari tell Leclerc not to think about tyres, you have to push. It has been, let's say a confusing race for the youngster.
Lap 30 Raikkonen vanquishes the other Haas, P9 now for the Alfa man.
Lap 29 A third one-two is on the cards here for Mercedes if they don't encounter any issues. Vettel is eleven seconds off the leader Hamilton now.
Lap 28 Albon passes Giovinazzi to take P12, a solid drive from the rookie after starting from the pit lane.
Lap 27 Hamilton is stretching the gap again now, his tyres look up to temperature and he's starting to push. Meanwhile, Raikkonen and Magnussen get in a good tussle for the last points-paying position after the Finn emerges from the pits. Raikkonen is your winner, he takes P10.
Lap 25 Hamilton isn't very happy that Mercedes pitted Bottas before him. The gap is down to 1.3s between the leader and his team-mate.
Lap 24 "I understand they have to try something different, but they treated Leclerc very harshly there," says former World Champion Nico Rosberg.
Lap 23 Hamilton comes in, the hard compound are his choice. Leclerc very much sacrificed here by Ferrari, he puts the hards on too and drops to P5 just in front of Raikkonen.
Lap 23 Vettel is managing to pull away now, Verstappen probably knew that was his only shot at making the pass.
Lap 22 Mercedes spot the danger, in comes Bottas to fit the hards.
Lap 21 A new fastest lap of the race for Vettel, but Max is sticking with him.
Lap 20 What a duel, Verstappen makes it through at the end of the back straight, Vettel pushes him onto the grass and keeps P5 into the final corner, this could save Leclerc.
Lap 19 Ferrari are using Vettel to cover that stop, on go the hards in a 2.5s stop, he makes it back out ahead of Verstappen, but the gap is less than a second, Leclerc will probably end up behind the Red Bull here.
Lap 18 Oh dear, another retirement for Renault, Hulkenberg is out and it looks like another power unit issue. Meanwhile Verstappen pits and puts on the hard tyres, looking to pressure the Ferraris.
Lap 17 At the end of lap 15, Hamilton became only the second driver in history to lead 4000 laps, he joins Michael Schumacher in that exclusive club.
Lap 17 It really is a problem of their own making right now, "they're playing snakes and ladders with their drivers and only finding snakes right now," as the legendary Martin Brundle put it. Either way, they have no answer for Mercedes right now.
Lap 15 Vettel is locking up and running wide all over the place, he just can't slow it down. Leclerc is on the radio again telling Ferrari to swap them.
Lap 14 Vettel locks up into the penultimate turn again and runs well wide. Are his tyres starting to struggle?
Lap 14 Bottas now well clear of Vettel. Leclerc has told his team he is not happy with what they have done, or words to that effect.
Lap 13 Hulkenberg is in and fits the hard compound, but Haas' undercut works, he re-joins behind Grosjean.
Lap 12 The swap has brought Verstappen that bit closer. Can he make a further impression in that two-second gap?
Lap 11 "Go faster or we will let Sebastian passed," say Ferrari to Leclerc. The team quickly swap them around though. Seb has a three second gap to Bottas.
Lap 10 Ferrari give Vettel the hurry up to take the fight to Leclerc,
Lap 9 And the rest of them: P11 Grosjean, P12 Magnussen, P13 Stroll, P14 Albon, P15 Russell, P16 Kubica, P17 Kvyat, P18 Giovinazzi, P19 Sainz and P20 Norris.
Lap 8 Let's give you the current order, starting with the top ten: P1 Hamilton, P2 Bottas, P3 Leclerc, P4 Vettel, P5 Verstappen, P6 Gasly, P7 Ricciardo, P8 Perez, P9 Hulkenberg and P10 Raikkonen.
Lap 6 Drive through penalty for Kvyat for causing a collision.
Lap 6 The top six is spreading out, but Vettel is right behind his team-mate, how long before he asks Ferrari to switch them around?
Lap 4 Raikkonen now passes Magnussen for P11, race pace has abandoned Haas again.
Lap 4 McLaren confirm to Norris that there is floor damage on his MCL34.
Lap 3 His team-mate Stroll is also making a move, up to P13.
Lap 3 Perez has moved into P8 to split the Renault's, a great start from the Mexican.
Lap 2 Kvyat makes contact with both McLaren's as he oversteers into the pair of them, the torpedo returns, that puts the McLaren pair to the back. The virtual safety car is active.
Lap 1 Team-mate's swap at the front, Hamilton jumps Bottas into P1, Leclerc jumps Vettel into P3.
14:13 Bottas brings them into the starting places, could this play into Gasly's hands? The only top 6 driver starting on softs.
14:12 Verstappen spins it, fortunately he doesn't fall to the back and continues, and around goes Kubica, these mediums just aren't biting into the tarmac.
14:10 Bottas leads them away for the formation lap.
14:05 Just over five minutes to go until lights out.
14:00 "We could have got more out of yesterday, but we have a better race car, hopefully we can make the 1000th GP a three-way battle," says Red Bull principal Christian Horner. On Gasly's lack of pace compared to Verstappen: "Yes, but he has put it on the same row, so he will take confidence from that."
13:57 "All prepared, I know what to do, I know the line," said Bottas when asked if he was ready for the race start from pole.
13:56 "We have a good car, so we just have to overtake two more. We have been quick all weekend so we just need the set-up," says Verstappen.
13:53 Derek Warwick, the FIA Driver Steward, has given Valtteri Bottas as his pick to win the race, saying he has been fantastic all weekend.
13:50 "It wasn't ideal yesterday, I don't think we could have done much more but we will see what we can do," says Kimi Raikkonen, before giving a somewhat reluctant handshake to Esteban Ocon.
13:47 Lance Stroll: "It's going to be tight, the margins are slim, everyone is really close so I am going to have to make some moves."
13:38 Albon will be starting the race from the pit lane due to all the changes to his car, basically a new car.
13:35 Pole sitter Bottas has made his way out of the pits followed by Verstappen and Hamilton as the drivers make their way to the grid. Plenty of practice starts going on as they exit.
13:31 As for Albon, he didn't take part in qualifying after suffering a massive crash in FP3. While the driver was OK, thankfully, his car was wrecked and Toro Rosso didn't have enough time to fix it. New chassis and new Honda engine for Albon for today's race.
13:27 Giovinazzi didn't set a time during qualifying due to a dropped cylinder, the same issue that cost Leclerc the Bahrain win. As such Alfa Romeo are handing him a new ECU for today's race but it is not the new spec that the Ferrari drivers are running, rather a new old spec ECU.
13:22 The lower half of the grid: 11 Daniil Kvyat Toro Rosso; 12 Sergio Perez Racing Point; 13 Kimi Raikkonen Alfa Romeo Racing; 14 Carlos Sainz McLaren; 15 Lando Norris McLaren; 16 Lance Stroll Racing Point; 17 George Russell Williams; 18 Robert Kubica Williams; 19 Antonio Giovinazzi Alfa Romeo Racing; 20 Alex Albon Toro Rosso.
13:14 Daniel Ricciardo, Nico Hulkenberg, Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean make up the rest of the top ten. Neither Haas driver set a time in Q3 as they also failed to cross the line in time.
13:11 His rivals, though, disagree with him. "Nope," was Hamilton's simple response to talk of an unwritten rule while Leclerc said: "To be completely honest you cannot have an agreement about not overtaking on the out-lap because different teams have different strategies with the tyres. Basically we need to follow what we are told so itâ??s not possible, unfortunately." Seems Max is the only one who has read this unwritten rule.
13:09 Behind Vettel is Charles Leclerc and then the two Red Bulls of Max Verstappen and Pierre Gasly. The Dutchman was furious with his rivals after qualifying as he was overtaken by Vettel and both Renaults who then backed off costing him time which ultimately meant he did not cross the line in time to start a final flying lap. "There is an unwritten rule that you just follow each other. But whatever," he said. "From now on in qualifying I'm going to f**k them up as well."
13:06 Although Ferrari have the fastest car down the long Shanghai straights, it is Mercedes who will start today's 56-lap grand prix from the front row of the grid. Valtteri Bottas took pole position from Lewis Hamilton while Sebastian Vettel is third. The Ferrari, it has been noted, is very slow in the slow corners handing Mercedes the overall advantage. But will they hold onto it in today's race?
13:00 Good day and welcome to the Shanghai circuit for round three of the 2019 F1 Championship, the Chinese Grand Prix. All times are local.
15:08 Well, Mercedes had no reason to fear the Scuderia today. Will they keep that advantage tomorrow or will that straight-line speed make Ferrari a handful in the race? And don't count out Red Bull. It's going to be a good one tomorrow, see you then!
15:05 P5 for Verstappen - replays show Vettel overtaking him just before he starts his lap. The Dutchman is raging and Red Bull tell him to abort the flying lap. P6 Gasly, P7 Ricciardo, P8 Hulkenberg, P9 Magnussen and P10 Grosjean completes the top ten for the race.
15:02 Bottas improves slightly to secure pole by 0.023s! It's a front-low lockout for Mercedes with Hamilton in P2. Vettel and Leclerc are three tenths back in P3 and 4 respectively.
15:00 Both Red Bull's have given up the ghost and head for the pits, as do Haas without either driver setting a time.
14:59 The pack make their way very slowly down the back straight ready for their final push.
14:55 Vettel goes four tenths back into P3, while Verstappen splits the Ferraris. P5 Leclerc, Gasly almost a second slower than Verstappen in P6, Hulkenberg, Ricciardo, Magnussen and Grosjean complete the order after the first runs.
14:53 A 1:31.570 from Hamilton, but Bottas goes onto provisional pole by 0.007s, wow.
14:51 No surprise to see everyone out on softs. Mercedes and Ferrari have that start on the mediums in the bag to give them more options after the first stint, right now though it's all about going fast!
14:48 Q3 is underway, what a battle for pole this could be!
14:44 Well done Gasly who makes Q3 for the first time in his Red Bull career in P6. Hamilton, Bottas, Vettel, Leclerc and Verstappen the drivers ahead of him. Hulkenberg, Magnussen, Grosjean and Ricciardo join them for the pole shootout. Renault finally making Q3 as well.
14:41 Norris P15 and Sainz P14 a shock there after the McLaren's Free Practice pace. Raikkonen, Perez and Kvyat join them in Q2 elimination.
14:41 Take that Valtteri, Hamilton finds time from nowhere to finish the session P1.
14:36 Kvyat, Magnussen and Ricciardo leading the Renault duo completes the current top ten. Perez, Sainz, Raikkonen, Norris and Grosjean are in trouble right now with 4 minutes to go.
14:35 Gasly is comfortably slower than his Red Bull team-mate though and he was on the softs while Max ran the mediums.
14:33 So, Vettel goes P2, 0.5s back with Leclerc less than a tenth shy in P3. Hamilton splits the Red Bulls in P5 with Verstappen ahead and Gasly just behind.
14:32 1:31.728 from Bottas on the mediums, nine tenths up on Hamilton, we have the Melbourne-spec Valtteri here.
14:29 Both Ferraris have bolted on the mediums, as have Mercedes.
14:28 Finally some action, Mercedes make a break for it and most of the pack follow.
14:25 Q2 time, the light goes green.
14:23 Hearing it was a power unit issue for Giovinazzi. Right then, join us shortly for Q2, this one will be tight.
14:22 Bottas sets the pace then, with Leclerc putting in a solid time at the end to split the Mercedes pair. Verstappen gets ahead of Vettel in P4. Renault and McLaren are looking strong, but that midfield is packed, Daniil Kvyat and the Haas' put in an improved showing.
14:20 P20 Albon, P19 Giovinazzi, P18 Kubica P17 Russell and P16 Stroll are the drivers we lose after Q1, Seven times in a row now that Stroll has dropped out in this session, the longest running active streak.
14:16 There looks a definite issue with Giovinazzi's Alfa, he won't have time to do a flyer, he's out.
14:15 Three mins to go, Alex Albon is P20 after not taking part following his FP3 crash. Antonio Giovinazzi has set no time. Russell, Kubica and Lance Stroll complete the current elimination zone.
14:13 Leclerc down in P11 now after that heavy-traffic run. Do Ferrari risk saving a set of softs or do they send him out again?
14:12 Max Verstappen goes P3, Pierre Gasly goes 0.6s slower than this team-mate and takes over P10.
14:10 A 1:32.6 from Valtteri Bottas - there's a marker. Lewis Hamilton slots into P2. All the drivers have gone for heavy blows with the softs from the start.
17:08 P1 for Leclerc with a 1:34.069, but he caught a train of cars preparing to start their hot laps. Sebastian Vettel is more fortunate and he sets a 1:33.557.
14:06 Ferrari and Mercedes are out on track now, Charles Leclerc is first to set off on a flying lap.
14:04 First time of the session from Robert Kubica - a 1:37.421, his team-mate George Russell follows with a 1:36.821 to go six tenths faster.
14:01 Both Williams' make a quick dash for it.
14:00 And away we go for Q1!
13:55 We're almost set for Q1. Five minutes until the track goes green...
13:50 The midfield battle also looks close once again, but Renault have been best of rest in every practice session. They may be able to split the two Red Bulls if they can keep the pace up.
13:40 After Ferrari set the early pace in FP1, it has been Valtteri Bottas and Mercedes sitting top of the timesheet in the next two practice sessions. The Finn had a four tenth advantage in FP3, but the battle for pole looks to be a very close one between the leading pair of teams.
13:35 The breaking (no pun intended) news from Shanghai is Toro Rosso's Alexander Albon will not be taking part in qualifying following a massive crash in FP3. He is absolutely fine...but his car certainly isn't. 19 drivers battling it out then.
13:30 Hello and welcome back to Shanghai where it is almost time for qualifying ahead of the Chinese Grand Prix. Q1 begins in 30 minutes. All times are local.
12:01 Join us in two hours for qualifying. Cheers.
12:00 The session won't resume and Bottas finishes quickest of all ahead of Vettel and Leclerc.
11:56 Replays show Albon got it wrong at the final corner, hitting the barrier with pretty much all four corners of the car. He is out of the car and walking back to the pits. He will be taken to the medical centre, though, as that was a hell of an impact.
11:54 Red flag is out!
11:54 Albon is moving int he car, tells Toro Rosso he is "sorry" but wow that car is badly damaged. He won't be taking part in qualifying.
11:53 Oh and we have someone in the barrier. It is Albon and his car is shattered to put it mildly.
11:51 And we have a new P1, it is Bottas on the soft tyres. A 1:32.830 for the Finnish driver. Hamilton has locked up on his hot lap.
11:50 Leclerc does improve his time but remains second, 0.026s down on his team-mate.
11:49 And offs are like buses because we now have Vettel flying off the track at the final corner. He was on course for a new fastest lap but got that last corner wrong.
11:47 Norris has an off, which - if I'm not mistaken - is the first notable incident of this session. Remarkably error free!
11:46 Good news for Ferrari fans is that Vettel is back out on track so whatever was an issue seems to have been sorted.
11:45 Bottas has moved ahead of Hamilton to go second, but the Finn is still sixth-tenths slower than Vettel. He did finish yesterday's second practice P1 so Mercedes may still have something in the bag for qualifying.
11:41 Norris in the McLaren jumps up to eighth place but is 1.7s down on the P1 time.
11:38 Silence descends as the drivers head back to the pits for fresh rubber and data checks before putting in a final run and, most likely, a qualifying simulation.
11:35 A bit of drama over at Ferrari with mechanics surrounding the rear left of his SF90. There is also work going on at the front of the car by the nose. It looks like it could be a telemetry problem.
11:34 Verstappen jumps up to fifth place but he is 1.2s down on Vettel's P1 time.
11:31 And with that Verstappen heads out on a set of the soft Pirellis and joins a traffic queue at the final hairpin. He is overtaken by a Haas while the next car behind him is Gasly.
11:30 Gasly's time is only good enough for 11th place.
11:27 Gasly leaves the pits in his RB15 but still no sign of Verstappen. The Frenchman is on the medium tyres.
11:26 Mercedes are running their revised front wing in this session. The team were ordered by the FIA to make changes as their endplates contravened the regulations.
11:22 Bottas goes second, 0.7s down. No wait, make that third as Hamilton goes second. He is 0.734s off the pace with Bottas a further 0.018s down. The Mercedes cars are roughly 5kph short of Ferrari's pace down the back straight.
11:21 It's getting rather busy out there with all but six drivers on the track. The Mercedes team-mates are also out on track with Bottas running the medium tyres. So too is Hamilton.
11:18 Vettel completes his lap with a 1:33.222.
11:16 Ricciardo joins the action along with the two Ferraris. He goes quickest but his RS19 is no match for the Ferraris. Leclerc hits the front with a 1:34.1.
11:11 It doesn't look as if Kvyat is going anywhere soon as Toro Rosso are working on his car. It looks as if his mechanics are resetting the tracking.
11:10 Only the two Williams have set times with Russell sixth-tenths up on his team-mate.
11:07 First lap time on the board comes from Kubica, a 1:37.2.
11:06 Hamilton is in no rush to get going and has just strolled into the Mercedes garage before walking across the pit lane to wave at the fans. And that, ladies and gents, is why he is so loved. He appreciates his fans and often goes the extra mile to let them know.
11:03 One by one the drivers head out, put in a lap to check that there is nothing wrong with the car, and head back into the pits. The normal start to a practice session. Hulkenberg's the latest to head out, practicing a start on his way out of the pits.
11:01 Magnussen and Giovinazzi are the first out followed by Kyvat and his new Honda engine.
11:00 Green light, let's go!
10:56 A reminder of the tyres here this weekend, dubbed the soft, medium and hard they are actually Pirelli's mid-range rubber in the C2, C3 and C4. Some drivers found their softs were graining in Friday's practice.
10:52 It is another glorious day in Shanghai with the track temperature already up to 36'C.
10:45 Several drivers will be looking to make up for lost time today as Giovinazzi missed FP1 when Alfa Romeo incorrectly installed his engine, Kvyat needed a new engine after Honda spotted an issue in FP2 and Leclerc had an engine cooling issue in second practice.
10:41 And the bottom half in which Williams were once again slowest of the slow, but only two-tenths behind the Alfa Romeo of Antonio Giovinazzi. 11 Kimi Raikkonen Alfa Romeo Racing 1.221s 33; 12 Alex Albon Toro Rosso 1.304s 37; 13 Daniil Kvyat Toro Rosso 1.364s 20; 14 Lance Stroll Racing Point 1.449s 37; 15 Sergio Perez Racing Point 1.454s 35; 16 Kevin Magnussen Haas 1.458s 34; 17 Romain Grosjean Haas 2.374s 32; 18 Antonio Giovinazzi Alfa Romeo Racing 2.584s 39; 19 Robert Kubica Williams 2.791s 38; 20 George Russell Williams 2.899s 35.
10:39 The top ten from Friday: 1 Valtteri Bottas Mercedes 1:33.330 37 laps; 2 Sebastian Vettel Ferrari 0.027s 33; 3 Max Verstappen Red Bull 0.221s 29; 4 Lewis Hamilton Mercedes 0.707s 32; 5 Nico Hulkenberg Renault 0.766s 31; 6 Carlos Sainz McLaren 0.811s 36; 7 Charles Leclerc Ferrari 0.828s 13; 8 Lando Norris McLaren 0.966s 38; 9 Daniel Ricciardo Renault 1.006s 32; 10 Pierre Gasly Red Bull 1.125s 32.
10:34 It was a bit of a surprise on Friday to see Valtteri Bottas pip Sebastian Vettel to the top spot on the timesheets. Mercedes spent the build up to the Chinese weekend speaking about Ferrari's straightline speed advantage but it seems the W10 is at least a match, if not better, in the corners as while Ferrari engines were the quickest in the speed traps, Bottas was quickest overall.
10:30 Good morning, afternoon or evening wherever you are in the world and welcome to our coverage of final practice for the Chinese Grand Prix. All times are local.
15:36 Hopefully Leclerc and Verstappen are good to go for Free Practice 3 tomorrow before qualifying gets underway. See you all then!
15:34 Verstappen reports a clutch issues as he comes back into the garage.
15:32 P11 Raikkonen, P12 Albon, P13 Kvyat, P14 Stroll, P15 Perez, P16 Magnussen, P17 Grosjean, P18 Giovinazzi, P19 Kubica and P20 Russell completes the order.
15:31 P4 Hamilton, P5 Hulkenberg, P6 Sainz, P7 Leclerc, P8 Norris, P9 Ricciardo and P10 Gasly is your top ten.
15:30 There we are, time's up. Bottas finishes fastest in FP2, Vettel in P2 is just 0.027s shy while Verstappen is two tenths back in P3.
15:29 Stroll upsets both Gasly and Bottas who try to move through, before he defends track position against Raikkonen. But, it's testing, it's race sims, so he's doing nothing wrong.
15:26 Four minutes to go.
15:20 "No fantastic lap times, but it's only FP2, hopefully we improve tomorrow" says Leclerc.
15:18 Gasly is nine tenths off his team-mate's pace with times unlikely to improve now, not good for the Frenchman.
15:12 Ferrari say a cooling systems check is keeping Leclerc in the garage.
15:09 20 minutes of the session to go.
15:06 Vettel isn't quite up with the name change yet, accusing the "Force India", known these days as Racing Point of blocking him at the start of his lap. Perez was also on a flying lap and entitled to be there, so any action against the Mexican would be surprising.
15:04 Leclerc is out of the car with his cap on, perhaps there is an issue? Some further info on this soon hopefully.
15:03 Kubica sits ahead of his team-mate despite running only the hard compound so far, a solid showing from the Polish racer.
15:01 P11 Raikkonen, P12 Albon, P13 Stroll, P14 Perez, P15 Magnussen, P16 Kvyat, P17 Grosjean, P18 Giovinazzi, P19 Kubica and P20 Russell.
14:57 With the dash for fastest lap cooling, let's give you the top ten as it stands: P1 Bottas, P2 Vettel, P3 Verstappen, P4 Hamilton, P5 Hulkenberg, P6 Sainz, P7 Leclerc, P8 Norris, P9 Ricciardo and P10 Gasly.
14:54 We haven't seen much of Leclerc. He didn't come out for qualy simulation and is down in P7.
14:52 Ferrari, Mercedes and Verstappen could give us a five-way battle for pole tomorrow if this pace remains, but we all know the party modes possessed by both the Scuderia and Silver Arrows.
14:50 Hamilton is back out on the mediums, he looks to have moved on to the race sim part of his session now.
14:46 Replays show the bumpy track of the main straight was enough to cause the right side of Grosjean's front wing to fail.
14:44 Daniel Ricciardo moves to within three tenths of Nico Hulkenberg with his latest attempt on the softs. Hulkenberg occupies P5 right now with Danny Ric holding P9. Renault looking promising early on.
14:43 Gasly briefly goes ahead of his team-mate with a 1:34.455, But Verstappen offers a quick response - 1:33.551 is his time that takes the Dutchman into P3. Both times set on the softs.
14:39 A solid time from Sainz on the softs to go P4 in his McLaren for now.
14:38 Bottas pips Vettel by 0.027s on the softs to take over P1.
14:36 It's another front wing failure for Haas, the identical point of failure as they suffered in Bahrain.
14:33 Vettel improves by 0.8s to a 1:33.357 on the softs.
14:32 Hang on, Robert Kubica puts the Williams P13! Yes, he's on the softs but still that is good for the team nonetheless.
14:31 The Ferrari pair along with Hamilton head out to begin their quali sim.
14:28 Daniil Kvyat is still in the pits after Toro Rosso switched his power unit. They are hoping to get him out in the next 15 minutes.
14:28 Daniil Kvyat is still in the pits after Toro Rosso switched his power unit. They are hoping to get him out in the next 15 minutes.
14:24 Bottas locks up into turn 3 and runs wide, Mercedes are having a few problems with getting the tyres to work in this session so far.
14:19 Not content, Hamilton puts his Mercedes top of the standings for now, a 1:34.226. Ferrari may decide to turn the pace up before their race sim to deliver a blow to their rivals.
14:17 It's a P2 for Max, he goes 0.267s behind current pace-setter Leclerc.
14:16 Pierre Gasly slots into P6 behind Carlos Sainz with a 1:35.570. Max Verstappen will soon give us a comparison on those mediums, he's on the back straight.
14:15 A 1:35.407 for Hamilton on the mediums after he goes wide into the penultimate corner.
14:12 Valtteri Bottas' 1:34.595 on the hard tyres splits the Ferraris, an early P2 spot for the Finn.
14:11 Charles Leclerc moves into P1 with a 1:34.271, his team-mate Sebastian Vettel goes half a second slower with his first attempt.
14:09 Lewis Hamilton spins in the opening section of the circuit, his rear tyres must have been lacking temperature out of the pits.
14:05 Giovinazzi with the first time of the session - a 1:39.266 on the hard tyres. The Haas pair quickly proceed to beat that, Grosjean on the mediums, Kevin Magnussen on the hard compound.
14:01 Romain Grosjean is first out for Haas on the medium C3's.
14:00 There's the green light, away we go for FP2.
13:55 The only driver having to play catch-up is Alfa Romeo's Antonio Giovinazzi. A problem with his engine meant he was limited to just two laps in FP1. Track goes green in five minutes.
13:50 There was an early indication of the close midfield battle that awaits us with Ricciardo in P6 to Sergio Perez in P17 separated by just 0.6s. Much more of that, please!
13:45 And, although it's still very early days, perhaps what will prove even more notable is Vettel was 10kph faster than Hamilton in the speed trap. That super long back straight will feel like heaven for the Ferrari.
13:40 That time was 0.207s quicker than what closest rival Lewis Hamilton managed in P2. The five-time World Champ was on the faster soft compound, too.
13:35 The first practice session belonged to Ferrari and Sebastian Vettel, who placed down an early marker with a 1:33.911 set on medium tyres.
13:30 Hello and welcome back to the Shanghai International Circuit for the second practice session ahead of what is the 1000th Formula 1 race. FP2 begins in 30 minutes with all times local.
11:32 Join us in two hours for FP2. Cheers!
11:31 Leclerc is third, a further 0.049s down, while Verstappen claims fourth for Red Bull. Williams are slowest of all.
11:30 The chequered flag falls on FP1 with a P1 for Vettel. The Ferrari driver is 0.207s faster than Lewis Hamilton despite running the medium tyres to the Brit's softs.
11:28 Two minutes to go...
11:25 Ricciardo reports that his tyre degradation is "pretty even" at the front and back of the car. This circuit is known for abusing the front left tyre given the long flowing corners.
11:21 Just in: new parts also for Ferrari and Haas. All four drivers have taken their second of two permitted control electronics.
11:16 Based on this session's timesheet we could be in for a close battle in the midfield as Ricciardo in sixth and Perez in 17th are separated by less than sixth tenths!
11:11 Raikkonen has improved to 16th place with only Sainz, Perez and the Williams lads behind him on the timesheets.
11:09 Verstappen is back on track sporting a set of soft tyres. He puts in personal bests and overhauls Bottas for fourth place.
11:06 Still nothing from Giovinazzi as his Alfa Romeo remains in the pits. According to reports it is a power issue, something to do with the installation of the engine. He's done a total of 2 laps.
11:02 The speed trap time has Vettel 10kph faster than Hamilton!
11:01 Hamilton's W10 is sporting new soft tyres while the Ferraris have left the pits on new medium tyres. Leclerc goes quickest, Hamilton beats that time and Vettel pips them both. A 1:33.911 for the German.
10:59 A set-up change for Verstappen with his RB15 sporting a few new vents just in front of the rear tyres.
10:58 Ricciardo puts in a fastest middle sector on the soft tyres and moves up to third place.
10:57 Toro Rosso were the next out followed by the Renaults, McLarens and Gasly. Once again it is getting busy out there. Ironic that all the drivers go out at the same time, go in at the same time, and then complain about traffic.
10:53 A personal best from Russell and he moves up to 17th place ahead of Raikkonen and Kubica.
10:49 Russell breaks the silence as Ferrari report via social media that they are waiting for the track conditions to improve.
10:48 Of those who have set times Kubica and Russell are slowest of all, 2.6 and 3.2s off the pace.
10:44 All the drivers barring Antonio Giovinazzi in the Alfa Romeo have clocked a time. No word yet from Alfa about what's wrong.
10:42 The top ten: 1 Lewis Hamilton Mercedes 1:35.102, 2 Valtteri Bottas Mercedes 0.043s, 3 Max Verstappen Red Bull 0.275s, 4 Sebastian Vettel Ferrari 0.293s, 5 Sergio Perez Racing Point 0.905s, 6 Charles Leclerc Ferrari 0.982s, 7 Pierre Gasly Red Bull 1.005s, 8 Nico Hulkenberg Renault 1.025s, 9 Carlos Sainz McLaren 1.176s, 10 Romain Grosjean Haas 1.238s.
10:40 40 minutes into FP1 and it is time to hand back the first set of tyres to Pirelli so once again silence descends over the Shanghai circuit.
10:37 Hamilton and Bottas are back in front of Vettel.
10:34 While that was going on Vettel went back up into P1 with a 1:35.395. Leclerc moves up to fourth.
10:32 Stroll got it very wrong in the final corner and had a pretty impressive spin and slide. He reports that the tyres are cold.
10:30 P1 for Hamilton with a 1:35.572. Bottas goes second with Vettel now 0.416s off the pace.
10:28 Yikes we have a slow Bottas out on track. Oh, no worries, he was just slowing down to make space before starting a flying lap.
10:27 And after the silence we now have a rush of cars, otherwise known as traffic, out on track! Norris goes quickest, Magnussen overhauls him, and then Vettel pips everyone - a 1:35.988 for the Ferrari driver.
10:23 We have a 1:40.7 for Russell but that is beaten by Raikkonen, who goes a tenth faster.
10:20 George Russell and Kimi Raikkonen also venture out.
10:18 But it is Robert Kubica in the Williams who breaks the silence. Speaking to the media on Thursday, the Pole wasn't exactly encouraging about Williams form and is expecting another weekend of the FW42 being the slowest car out on track.
10:17 We have action, sort of. Hamilton has walked to his W10 and is now climbing in. Here's hoping we get a few laps from the World Champ soon.
10:14 Still no takers as the track temperature rises to 32'C.
10:09 All the drivers except the Mercedes pairing have been out for a lap.
10:05 As the installation laps continue here's a quick reminder about the tyres. Pirelli have brought their mid-range to Shanghai, the C2, C3 and C4 compounds with the drivers heavily favouring the soft tyres in their selections.
10:03 Daniil Kvyat is heading back into the pits having reported to Toro Rosso that his "steering wheel is not straight". It is clearly pointing to the right.
10:01 Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean lead out Alexander Albon followed by Vettel and Gasly.
10:00 Green lights and off we go...
09:59 Two DRS zones, 210mph down the back straight and a Turn 14 hairpin that could decide Sunday's race... it is time for first practice for the Chinese Grand Prix.
09:55 With five minutes to go, the air temperature is 16'C and the track is up to 28'C.
09:50 Red Bull are the defending Chinese GP champs thanks to Daniel Ricciardo's win in 2018. Back-to-back wins would be a surprise for the Honda-powered team but don't discount Max Verstappen while Pierre Gasly is still finding his feet at Red Bull. As for Ricciardo, he still needs to finish his first race for Renault, never mind bag his first points.
09:44 Speaking of Leclerc, he is posing an interesting conundrum for Ferrari given a) his pace and b) his decision to buck team orders in Bahrain. In Australia he listened, in Bahrain he didn't and was on course for the victory before an engine issue robbed him of pace and positions. He still managed to finish P3, his first F1 podium. Leclerc says he's not Ferrari's number 1 nor will he ask for that position. What he is, though, must be a serious headache for Sebastian Vettel who was massively lambasted by the Italian media for his Bahrain spin.
09:42 Mercedes arrived in Shanghai stating that they are wary of a challenge from Ferrari, especially the straight line speed of the Scuderia's engine, while also expecting Red Bull to be up there. And while both Ferrari and Red Bull have had their moment in the sun this season, it is Mercedes who won the Australian (Valtteri Bottas) and Bahrain (Lewis Hamilton) races with 1-2 finishes. The Brackley squad has 87 points, just one short of a full house thanks to Charles Leclerc's fastest lap in Bahrain.
09:36 Formula 1 is marking an incredible milestone this weekend as the sport celebrates its 1000th grand prix. That means a whole bunch of new helmets with almost every driver debuting a new look helmet. Our favourite - Daniel Ricciardo's old school lid!
09:30 Welcome to the 'Shang', home of the Chinese Grand Prix and the venue for round three of the 2019 F1 World Championship. All times are local.
