22 Oct 22:38 Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton wins the USGP!
22 Oct 22:37 Max goes pass Kimi just as Hamilton wins in the US!!!
22 Oct 22:34 2 LAPS TO GO. This will be Hamilton's fifth out of 6 wins here at this track.
22 Oct 22:32 Can Mad Max pass Kimi though?
22 Oct 22:31 Just 4 laps to go.
22 Oct 22:31 Bottas and Verstappen battling again.
22 Oct 22:30 Vettel about to pass Kimi. Can he possibly chase down Hamilton?
22 Oct 22:29 Vettel in P3 from Bottas in P4.
22 Oct 22:23 Vettel laps the Haas with Ericsson causing some contact and causing Magnussen to spin out.
22 Oct 22:19 Imagine that, if Kimi had to take this race from Lewis... :D
22 Oct 22:19 Hamilton a bit surprised by Kimi's pace.
22 Oct 22:08 Clever move by the Red Bulls. Putting fresh tyres on Max's car means they're forcing a move on Kimi and Bottas. Vettel also now doing the same thing.
22 Oct 22:06 Max back on supersofts?
22 Oct 21:53 Oh dear! Are we in for another Force India sandwhich?
22 Oct 21:46 Heartbreak for Alonso as he retires, again.
22 Oct 21:43 Hamilton retakes the lead from Verstappen.
22 Oct 21:38 Max P1, Hamilton P2 and Vettel P3.
22 Oct 21:37 Max currently in P2, he has moved up 14 spots on the grid since the lights went out.
22 Oct 21:36 Hamilton in and out of pits too.
22 Oct 21:32 Hamilton still says he can go a bit further.
22 Oct 21:31 Vettel in and out of the pits!
22 Oct 21:29 No! Ricciardo is out :( engine failure!
22 Oct 21:27 Hamilton says he can go a bit longer on those tyres.
22 Oct 21:21 56 laps - can this be a one-stop race for most of the drivers?
22 Oct 21:13 Hamilton takes the lead!
Finish Late news to bring you. A five-second penalty for Verstappen for his illegal overtake on Raikkonen, the Finn is given P3 back!
Finish Hamilton's fifth win in six, both this season and at this track, puts him 66 points ahead in the title race with 75 points left available. Thanks for joining our live coverage and see you next week for the Mexican Grand Prix.
Finish Ocon, Sainz, Perez, Massa and Kvyat collect the rest of the points.
Finish Bottas limps home in P5, but Hamilton's win means Mercedes are Constructors' Champions for the fourth year in a row.
Finish And takes the checkered flag! Vettel finishes second and Verstappen has snatched the final podium spot away from Raikkonen! Incredible from the Dutchman.
Lap 56 Race leader Hamilton begins his final lap...
Lap 55 Ocon looks like he will keep Sainz at bay for P6. Verstappen is trying to launch a late attack on Raikkonen for the final podium spot.
Lap 54 Further down the field, Massa gets the better of Kvyat for P9.
Lap 54 Hamilton has a 15 second advantage and is about to take another step toward the World Championship title.
Lap 53 And Bottas now pits for a last-ditch stint on the ultrasofts.
Lap 53 Bottas runs wide through the esses and Verstappen grabs P4. The Dutchman started P15 on the grid.
Lap 52 But as they battle it out, Raikkonen lets Vettel through to take P2.
Lap 51 Now Verstappen fancies a look at Bottas...
Lap 51 Vettel goes round the outside of Bottas at Turn 1 to get himself back on the podium with five laps to go.
Lap 50 Ericsson, in P14, has been given a five-second timed penalty for causing a collision.
Lap 49 Vettel's picking up the pace and sets the new fastest lap of the race. He is 1.5 seconds behind Bottas.
Lap 48 Hamilton may have been a little concerned but the gap is nearly 13 seconds to Raikkonen in P2. The main battle now is between Bottas, Vettel and Raikkonen for the final podium spot.
Lap 47 Contact between the backmarkers as Ericsson hits Magnussen just as they were being lapped.
Lap 46 The two-stop has not worked out for Vettel, who is coming under increasing pressure from Verstappen in P5.
Lap 44 Hamilton is told about Raikkonen's pace and responds, ""How are they so close?". The gap is 10 seconds with 12 laps to go.
Lap 43 "Nice work, nice work, keep engine [mode] one for another lap, let's pull a gap," Raikkonen is told on team radio.
Lap 42 Raikkonen gets past Bottas at the end of the back straight! The former is up to P2.
Lap 42 Looks like Hamilton has the upped the pace a little out in front to show he does not need to two-stop in order to cover off Vettel.
Lap 41 Raikkonen opens DRS heading down to Turn 1 but is just too far away to launch an attack on Bottas in P2.
Lap 40 16 laps to go...and Verstappen sets the new fastest lap of the race. Will that bait Mercedes into a two-stop?
Lap 39 And he gets back out in front of Verstappen. Current top 5: Ham, Bot, Rai, Vet, Ver. What do Mercedes do with Hamilton. Stick it out or twist with a two-stop?
Lap 39 And in comes Vettel for 'Plan B'. Where will he come back out?
Lap 38 Red Bull thinking some more two-stop strategies are coming up, so Verstappen is going to try the under-cut.
Lap 38 A couple of lock-ups from Bottas as he continues to keep Raikkonen at bay. This fight is bringing Verstappen into mix from P5, but he pits again for super softs. Interesting.
Lap 37 "We need to think about Plan B," says Vettel in P2, who is weighing up a two-stopper and a switch to the ultrasofts.
Lap 36 Further up the road, Raikkonen is putting pressure on Bottas in P3 and is within DRS range.
Lap 35 Now Perez is under attack from Kvyat, who has been very impressive thus far with his F1 career on the line.
Lap 34 Massa overtakes Magnussen for P11. Sainz gets the better of Perez for P7 with a lovely move at Turn 19.
Lap 33 All eyes on the battle behind between Ocon, Perez, Sainz and Kvyat. Perez has asked Force India to let him past Ocon but the team are having none of it.
Lap 32 Hamilton, Vettel, Bottas, Raikkonen, Verstappen are covered by just 15 second, but not battles for position emerging at the moment.
Lap 30 Massa finally pits, now to keep a close on the Force Indias who are under strict orders to play nice with each other.
Lap 30 Massa is having to defend very hard from Ocon and Perez is trying to squeeze past the pair of them!
Lap 28 Massa is still up on P6 but is still yet to pit. He has both pink panthers on his tail.
Lap 28 Debutant Hartley is not faring too well. He's battling it with Stroll for P13. Renault new boy Sainz is running in P9.
Lap 27 That Alonso retirement puts Kvyat into the top 10. Remember him?
Lap 26 Verstappen pits and takes the soft tyres until the end of the race. He falls down to P5. Hamilton has re-asserted his authority out in front with a 3.6 second gap to Vettel.
Lap 25 "I think I have an engine issue," says Alonso. Heard that one before. He comes into the pits and retires from the race.
Lap 25 Problems for Alonso, who is falling down the field.
Lap 24 Hamilton given plenty of room to Verstappen as he launches a pretty tame attack. No need to get involved with a title on the line. The Brit finally gets the job done to take the race lead again.
Lap 23 We're at the halfway point, and Hamilton is within DRS range of Verstappen...
Lap 23 Massa (P6), Vandoorne (P10) and Ericsson (P13) are all yet to stop having started on the super-soft compound.
Lap 22 Hamilton's lead on Vettel has opened up again to over a second. A tricky customer still ahead though in Verstappen, who has still yet to pit.
Lap 21 It comes Raikkonen, so Verstappen now has the race lead. "Why did you let Vettel get so close?" questions Hamilton on team radio. Indeed.
Lap 20 Raikkonen, yet to pit, now has the race lead with Verstappen, on a longer first stint, in P2, ahead of the two title rivals of Hamilton and Vettel.
Lap 20 And in he comes. It's a smooth stop but Hamilton has only just come out ahead of Vettel!
Lap 19 Bottas is next to pit from the front. He re-emerges in P5. Vettel, though is a second faster than Hamilton on the latest lap. The Brit needs to be pitting pretty soon.
Lap 18 Vettel comes back out in P5.
Lap 18 Hamilton is staying out on the ultras for now and reports that he can "extend" his first stint for now. Tyres feeling pretty good.
Lap 17 Meanwhile, Vettel pits from P2. He is on to the soft tyres.
Lap 16 "Engine's gone," he reports. He pulls up on the grass at Turn 15. Game over for the Aussie.
Lap 16 Ricciardo is out of the race! What's happened here?
Lap 15 Back out in front, Hamilton is four seconds up the road from Vettel, who is struggling to keep on the Brit's tail.
Lap 15 Ricciardo is getting his fresh tyres to work pretty quickly, flying past Sainz on the entry into the uphill Turn 1 to take P8.
Lap 14 Ricciardo comes back out in P9, ahead of Massa and Kvyat.
Lap 14 No further action between Bottas and Ricciardo in their lap 2 tangle.
Lap 13 And the Aussie is really struggling as Raikkonen is all over the back of him. In comes the Red Bull for a fresh set of tyres.
Lap 12 "As soon as we get a gap, let's go," says Ricciardo, eager to make a pit stop from P4.
Lap 12 Hamilton has opened up a 3.3 second lead to Vettel...
Lap 11 Verstappen keeps moving on up. He's in P6 from P15 on the grid after making easy work of Ocon at the end of the back straight. "You're back in the game," says his engineer.
Lap 10 Ricciardo in P4: "Fronts are pretty ****ed - not helped by running in dirty air".
Lap 10 The first squabble between Bottas and Ricciardo on lap two is under investigation by the stewards.
Lap 9 "We are on Plan A," Hamilton is told on team radio. Presume that is a one-stop strategy this afternoon.
Lap 8 Meanwhile, Verstappen is up to P7 after breezing past Alonso at the end of the back straight. The Dutchman is flying!
Lap 7 Pascal Wehrlein joins Hulkenberg on the sidelines after contact with Magnussen at the start.
Lap 7 And now Hamilton has already opened up a one second lead...
Lap 6 After setting a new fastest lap, Hamilton got within DRS and made light work of Vettel at the end of the back straight.
Lap 6 Hamilton is back in front!
Lap 5 Nico Hulkenberg, who took on a raft of engine penalties ahead of the race, is our first retirement this afternoon.
Lap 4 "Feeling pretty good," reports Hamilton, despite dropping a place from the start.
Lap 4 Bottas and Ricciardo are at it again! The latter locks up heavily this time and the Finn holds him off once again.
Lap 3 Barely a second separating race leader Vettel and Hamilton. Raikkonen is back up to P5 after getting the jump on Ocon again.
Lap 2 Verstappen is already up to P11 from P15 on the grid after overtaking his former team-mate Kvyat.
Lap 2 Wonderful wheel-to-wheel action between Bottas and Ricciardo! The Aussie leaps down the inside at Turn 1 but the Finn defends valiantly and just about manages to hold on for P3.
Lap 1 Bottas stays P3 with Ricciardo on his tail. Ocon gets the jump on Raikkonen for P5.
Lap 1 We're off and Sebastian Vettel leads the United States Grand Prix. He gets the better start and holds the inside line from Hamilton after a little touch of wheels.
14:00 Usain Bolt gets the formation lap underway. 56 laps ahead of us. Let's do this!
13:59 "Let's get ready to rummmmmmble!" announces Michael Buffer...and the crowd go mild.
13:56 We're almost set for the formation lap, just about recovered from Lance Stroll being introduced as 'The Heartbreaker'.
13:45 Well, that was certainly...something. It's time for the national anthem.
13:35 Not gone too well so far, Stoffel Vandoorne has missed his cue. Michael Buffer referred to Danill Kvyat as 'The Torpedo'. Yes, he really went there.
13:30 After rain this morning, there is barely a cloud in the sky and there is no threat of any more of the wet stuff to come. It's time for the driver introductions...
13:25 Hamilton on today's race: "I expect today will be a close fight and I don't think there will be a moment when we get to breathe."
13:22 The pit lane has opened 15 minutes earlier than usual by the way. That's because Michael Buffer is going to introduce the drivers onto the grid, of course.
13:20 Lance Stroll (P15) - three-place grid penalty, Max Verstappen (P16) 15-place grid penalty, Kevin Magnussen (P17) three-place grid penalty, Nico Hulkenberg (P18) 20-place grid penalty, Brendon Hartley (P19) 25-place grid penalty, Stoffel Vandoorne (P20) 30-place grid penalty.
13:15 Daniil Kvyat, looking to save his Toro Rosso career after returning to action this weekend, is in P11. Romain Grosjean is ahead of the two Saubers (Ericsson and Wehrlein). Now onto those with grid penalties...
13:13 Esteban Ocon completes the third row, and it's an all-Spanish fourth row with Carlos Sainz, on his Renault debut, lining up P7 and Fernando Alonso starting P8. Sergio Perez and Felipe Massa round off the top 10.
13:10 Daniel Ricciardo and Kimi Raikkonen will be looking to get involved in the fight for victory this afternoon. They line up P4 and P5 respectively.
13:08 The more likely scenario today is that Mercedes retain their Constructors' Championship. If Hamilton or Bottas win the US Grand Prix, then the title is theirs once again.
13:05 Here's how pole-sitter Lewis Hamilton can clinch a fourth World Championship today. 1) Hamilton wins and Sebastian Vettel, starting P2, finishes 6th or lower 2) Hamilton finishes 16 points above Vettel and Valtteri Bottas, starting P3, fails to win.
13:00 Hello and welcome to our live coverage of a potentially title-defining United States Grand Prix. Lights out in one hour...
17:04 Ricciardo gets the better of Raikkonen and Verstappen, with Ocon, Sainz, Alonso and Perez completing the top 10. Thanks for joining our live coverage. Catch you again for the race tomorrow!
17:03 No improvement from Hamilton but he didn't any! He's bagged a 72nd pole position of his career and the 11th pole of the season. Vettel does split the two Mercs with Bottas in P3.
17:02 Vettel is up to P2...for now
17:02 But is two tenths down through the middle sector...
16:59 Sebastian Vettel is six thousandths of a second up on Hamilton through the first sector...
16:56 We're gearing up for the final hot laps. It's looking pretty ominous it has to be said. Can anyone produce a magic lap to dislodge the dominant Hamilton?
16:54 And then loses half a second through the middle. He does go ahead of Vettel though for P3. Ferrari seven tenths off Hamilton!
16:53 But Raikkonen goes quickest of all in the first sector...
16:51 Not a great first sector time from Hamilton, but he recovers through the rest of the lap and posts a 1:33.1! Team-mate Bottas is four tenths behind...
16:48 Here we go for Q3. Hamilton has topped every session thus far this weekend. Can he now land the all-important pole position?
16:43 Alonso squeezes every last drop out of the McLaren to reach Q3, and Sainz is also in there on debut for Renault. Impressive stuff.
16:42 Out in Q2: Massa, Kvyat, Vandoorne, Grosjean, Hulkenberg.
16;40 Hamilton goes even quicker with a 1:33.437...
16:37 A flurry of cars coming back out again for the final scrap to reach Q3...
16:34 In the elimination zone ahead of the final Q2 runs: Alonso, Vandoorne, Grosjean and Kvyat, with Hulkenberg already conceding defeat given the hefty grid penalty coming his way.
16:32 P5 for Raikkonen, Ricciardo splitting the Ferraris then on these first Q2 runs with Mercedes looking untouchable thus far.
16:31 And soon dislodged by Vettel, but he is eight tenths slower than Hamilton.
16:31 Ricciardo slots into P3, nine tenths off Hamilton's pace.
16:30 A 1:33.5 for Hamilton and Bottas gets to within a couple of tenths despite having a better middle sector than his team-mate.
16:28 Hamilton and Bottas are going to be among the first to put a time up on the board for Q2. They both have the ultras strapped on now.
16:25 We're back underway for Q2, just 14 cars battling it out for the top 10 shoot-out as Hulkenberg, who has a 20-place grid penalty this weekend, is not bothering to go out for another run this afternoon.
16:18 Improvement from the likes of Magnussen and Hartley, but it's not enough to get through. Ericsson, Stroll and Wehrlein are also out. Q2 coming up.
16:17 The top 10 are reserving a set of tyres and staying put in the garage for the remainder of Q1. 10 cars then fighting to avoid the elimination zone with Wehrlein, Grosjean, Ericsson, Hartley and Magnussen in trouble.
16:15 Stroll is also under investigation for blocking Grosjean, who almost turned into the Frenchman on the exit of Turn 19. Close one!
16:13 So the whole field, bar Mercedes and Ferrari, started the session on ultrasoft tyres. It's Hamilton leading Verstappen, Bottas and Vettel as we prepare for the final hot laps of Q1.
16:12 Kevin Magnussen is under investigation by the stewards for allegedly impeding Sergio Perez. "He's always the same!" bemoans 'Checo'.
16:11 But not for long, as Hamilton improves considerably on the supersofts and shaves 0.077s off Verstappen's best.
16:10 No problem for Verstappen now who goes fastest with a 1:34.899.
16:09 Verstappen is complaining about traffic so a second attempt at a hot lap is coming up for the Dutchman.
16:07 Valtteri Bottas is the quickest of the big-hitters so far with a 1:35.3 on supersofts. He is followed by Ocon (US), Ricciardo (U) and Raikkonen (SS).
16:05 Pascal Wehrlein now tops the timesheets, but the track is jam-packed with cars now. Prepare for lots of juggling around.
16:03 The drivers are slowly but surely making their way out from the garage. The under-pressure Kvyat is first up on the board with a 1:37.865.
16:00 Green light! Let's go!
15:55 We're almost set. Q1 is an 18-minute session where the five slowest drivers will be eliminated ahead of Q2.
15:52 Not too much in the way of action up and down the pit lane. Although there is a bit of a mad scramble around Daniel Ricciardo's car, which is surprising given that four hours have passed since FP3.
15:50 There were some reports earlier in the week that qualifying would be a rather wet and murky affair, but the sun is shining and there is just a 10 per cent chance of a shower over the next hour.
15:45 Speaking of Hartley, he is one of two debutants this weekend and a beady eye will be kept on him and Carlos Sainz at Renault as they go up against their respective team-mates Daniil Kvyat and Nico Hulkenberg in qualifying for the first time.
15:40 A few impending grid penalties to be aware of heading into qualifying; Max Verstappen - 15 places, Nico Hulkenberg - 20 places, Stoffel Vandoorne - 5 places, Brendon Hartley - 25 places.
15:35 Rather unsurprisingly, Lewis Hamilton has topped all three practice sessions so far this weekend at a track he absolutely loves. Sebastian Vettel got to within a tenth in FP3 earlier, but Hamilton is very much the driver to beat this afternoon.
15:30 Hello and welcome back to qualifying in Austin, Texas for the United States Grand Prix. Q1 gets underway in 30 minutes. All times are local.
12:01 Ricciardo goes ninth and that is it for FP3. Hamilton quickest ahead of Vettel and Bottas. Join us in four hours for qualifying for the United States GP. Cheers.
12:00 The chequered flag is out but Ricciardo, and anyone else on a hot lap, can complete it. He is, however, having to contend with a lot of traffic.
11:58 Ricciardo has fallen to tenth place but he's out on a brand new set of ultrasoft tyres so this should be good...
11:56 Sainz goes seventh behind his team-mate, 0.04s down.
11:55 So much for Hulkenberg focusing on race pace in light of his penalty as he goes P6 on the ultrasoft tyres. He is 1.1s off the pace set by Hamilton.
11:52 Mercedes and Ferrari are both back in the pits along with the Red Bull drivers. They'll be focusing on long run pace in the final minutes of this session.
11:49 Hamilton runs it wide at Turn 9 but doesn't improve his overall time.
11:44 Bottas joins the list of those testing the track limits as he runs it wide. Not the first, not the last.
11:41 Vettel goes quickest, Hamilton goes quicker with a 1:34.478.
11:39 Verstappen has a slide and reports: "That was an unexpected slide. I felt a massive loss of rear grip."
11:37 The VSC has ended, DRS is enabled, and F1 is back up to speed in Austin.
11:36 Not a lot of cars out there given the VSC, just Sainz, Hulkenberg, the Saubers and Verstappen.
11:32 The Virtual Safety Car is out for Grosjean's beached car. He spun off into the gravel, shaking his head as he climbed out the car.
11:30 Yellow flags are out as we have Grosjean off in the gravel, and that car is beached.
11:27 A moment for Vettel as he pulls in to the Red Bull pit box.
11:26 Alonso is up to sixth place in the McLaren, 1.2s down, on the ultras. He's ahead of Ocon, Sainz, Perez and Hulkenberg.
11:24 Verstappen, who is officially getting a grid penalty for a new ICE and a new MGU-H, is still in the garage.
11:21 New P1, this time it is Hamilton with a 1:35.125. Bottas makes it a Mercedes 1-2, 0.4s shy of his team-mate's best.
11:19 Vettel pops up into third place.
11:18 Hartley reports that the "helmet is all okay" after yesterday's troubles. "Happy days" is the response from Toro Rosso. Love it.
11:17 Bottas improves to second place on his second flying lap, 0.075s off Raikknen's best, while Hamilton goes third, a further 0.07s down.
11:14 Vettel goes P1, Ricciardo goes P1 and now Raikkonen does with a 1:35.562.
11:12 Vettel and Raikkonen both take to the track on the ultrasoft tyres, the same choice as Bottas who has just left the pits.
11:11 Hulkenberg slots into second place, 0.4s behind his team-mate. Both Renault drivers are on the ultrasoft tyres.
11:10 Grosjean and his "I'm not moaning" helmet are in the car and waiting to leave the pits. On the topic of helmets, Hamilton is back to the white design he last wore in Singapore.
11:08 Sainz is comfortably quicker than his STR replacement as he does a 1:37.1.
11:06 First time on the board is a 1:41.4 and it belongs to Hartley on the soft tyres.
11:05 Gloves ready, helmet on, and in to the car. Hamilton is just about ready to roll.
11:04 Alonso, who lost time in FP1 due to a hydraulic leak on the chassis side, joins his team-mate out on track with Massa and Hartley following him out.
11:02 One by one the drivers head out with Raikkonen and Vandoorne the latest to take to the track while the Force India drivers are getting strapped into their cars and ready to run.
11:01 Verstappen heads out followed by Vettel in his new chassis, Ericsson, Grosjean and Wehrlein.
11:00 Green light and off we go for FP3...
10:58 Once again Verstappen, facing grid penalties this weekend, is waiting at the end of the pit lane to get going.
10:51 It is a dry start to the morning, air temperature is 25'C, track is 29'C and there is some cloud cover overhead.
10:44 Carlos Sainz was just outside in P11, one place ahead of his Renault team-mate Nico Hulkenberg, while debutant Brendon Hartley was P17, 3.3s off the pace.
10:41 Valtteri Bottas, Daniel Ricciardo, Kimi Raikkonen, Fernando Alonso, Felipe Massa, Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon completed the top ten.
10:36 Vettel was third fastest, half a second down, but missed a large part of the session due to set-up issues. Ferrari revealed after FP2 that they would change his chassis ahead of final practice.
10:35 Lewis Hamilton was the one to beat in both Friday sessions as he finished half a second up on Sebastian Vettel on a drying track in FP1 while his 1:34.668 was 0.4s up faster than Max Verstappen in the day's second session.
10:30 Welcome back to the Circuit of the Americas for Saturday's third and final practice for the United States Grand Prix weekend. All times are local.
15:30 Checkered flag. Another practice session, another dominant display from Hamilton who sits very pretty at the top of the leaderboard ahead of Verstappen. Vettel, in P3, has plenty of work ahead on Saturday after missing a big bulk of the session due to set-up changes. Join us again then!
15:27 Vettel is coming back out again, but he'll only get a couple of laps in with just two minutes of the session remaining.
15:21 Vettel reported "something weird with the front axle" on the way back to the garage and said the car "felt like jelly". Another day wasted at Ferrari.
15:17 Vettel is simply unable to get into any sort of rhythm today. He is back in the pits again as Ferrari confirm a set-up change is needed.
15:13 Interesting... Verstappen is told the early laps from the Mercedes drivers on high fuel with the ultra-softs are similar to his pace earlier in the session on high fuel with super-softs.
15:11 And Hulkenberg shoots straight up to P12, just 0.005 seconds slower than his new team-mate Sainz.
15:08 Hulkenberg finds himself all the way down in P18, but that is due to a few engine problems which Renault are now hopeful that they have fixed. Unlike the rest of the grid, 'The Hulk' is going to continue with his qualy sim programme.
15:00 Looking at those qualifying simulation times... the returning Kvyat (P12) finds himself 1.3 seconds quicker than Toro Rosso debutant Hartley (P16).
14:55 Lance Stroll, currently down in P15, is firmly planted back in the garage after the Williams mechanics discover an issue with the exhaust.
14:50 We're beyond the halfway point of FP2, which spells the end of the qualifying sim runs and attention now turns the high-fuel, longer race programmes.
14:45 Vettel finally gets his first timed lap on the board, but is half a second down on Hamilton and slots into P3.
14:42 Bottas closes to within six tenths of Hamilton, but is soon nudged down to P3 as Verstappen goes three tenths quicker than the Finn after his first hot lap on the ultras.
14:39 Hamilton's 1:34.668 actually surpasses the outright track record, which he set last year in Q3.
14:35 And Hamilton blows that out of the water by going nearly a second quicker than his team-mate, also on the ultras.
14:31 Drivers beginning to re-emerge now and there are plenty of pink ultrasoft tyres in sight. Bottas improves by 1.3 seconds from supers to ultras to take top spot with a 1:35.596
14:27 Coming up to an hour left in the session. Vettel the only driver yet to set a time after that scary moment at Turn 19.
14:22 A first lull in proceedings with only Hulkenberg, Stroll, Ericsson and Wehrlein currently out on track.
14:19 And Vettel slides off on his first hot lap! The penultimate corner caused problems in FP1 and it's the same story here. He touches the kerb and the back end steps out immediately after. Thankfully for him, the gravel trap saves him from any serious damage.
14:18 Vettel finally emerges from the garage, 18 minutes into the session.
14:15 The Red Bull boys are now trading places at the top. Ricciardo, on the quicker supersoft option, sets a 1:35.116 - two tenths quicker than Verstappen on softs.
14:10 A scruffy start from Hamilton, just as Kimi Raikkonen shaves three tenths off Bottas' best to rise to P1.
14:08 Only Vettel, Lance Stroll and Max Verstappen are still in the pits. Hamilton is starting his first hot lap on the soft compound tyre, looking to challenge Bottas (on supersofts) at the top of the leaderboard.
14:04 Romain Grosjean is spinning around, move outta his way. Turn 1 catches out the Frenchman with his tyres and those pesky Haas brakes obviously still running a little cold.
14:02 Another early starter is Daniil Kvyat, back in from the cold at Toro Rosso, but who knows how long for? It was a watching brief this morning for the Russian as Galael took part in FP1.
14:00 Green lights. Fernando Alonso, who missed a lot of FP1 due to a hydraulics leak, is eager to make up for lost time as he is among the first to head out.
13:50 It has brightened up considerably compared to the doom and gloom that was hanging over COTA this morning. A lovely, dry track for the drivers to work with this afternoon.
13:45 And it cannot be a race weekend without an ever-increasing list of penalties. Max Verstappen, Nico Hulkenberg, Stoffel Vandoorne and Brendon Hartley are all set to start at the back of the grid.
13:42 Further down the field, Carlos Sainz got his first taste of action from Renault, finishing P10, while Brendon Hartley (P14) got his Toro Rosso debut kick-started. Reserve drivers Sean Gelael and Charles Leclerc also got some more F1 experience under their belts.
13:38 Rain prior to FP1 made for a difficult, slippery opening session but, as the track dried out, it was Lewis Hamilton who emerged fastest. The Brit, who could win the title this weekend, was five tenths clear of his nearest rival Sebastian Vettel.
13:30 Hello and welcome back to Austin, Texas for FP2 at the Circuit of The Americas - home of the United States Grand Prix. The 90-minute session gets underway at 1400 local time.
11:33 That's it for now, join us in two hours for FP2. Cheers.
11:31 Hamilton finishes quickest of all ahead of Vettel by half a second! Sainz has beaten Hulkenberg, and Hartley is P14 to Gelael's P17.
11:30 The chequered flag is out and FP1 is over.
11:24 The Saubers of Ericsson and Leclerc are slowest of all - as we've come to expect this season. Both drivers are over four seconds down on Hamilton's P1 time.
11:21 Sainz is just outside the top ten in 11th place in his first session as a Renault driver. he is, however, one place ahead of Hulkenberg.
11:19 Bottas won't be back out this session after flat-spotting his tyres.
11:13 Hartley reports that his "helmet is lifting" but is told that there isn't time to fix it this session, it will be sorted out in the break.
11:11 Another improvement from Hamilton and this time it is a 1:36.335 for the Mercedes driver. Bottas has a massive flat-spot after locking up and running off the track.
11:10 Problems for Ricciardo who is out for the rest of the session with an undisclosed issue.
11:07 Bottas makes it a Mercedes 1-2 as he ups his pace, now just 0.044s down on his team-mate.
11:03 As the track continues to dry out the lap times are tumbling. Hamilton has just brought it down to a 1:36.935, over a second up on Verstappen's best. Bottas goes third.
11:01 P1 for Verstappen, a 1:38.158.
11:00 Ricciardo has the benchmark down to a 1:39.3 with Raikkonen second and Hulkenberg third.
10:59 Vandoorne is having a few problems and reports "low revs". He is told to "turn to six" but says he's not happy with that. The reply: "Honda is."
10:55 Bad news for Alonso, his McLaren has a hydraulic leak and he won't be out this session.
10:54 Ricciardo blitzes Vettel's previous best, a 1:40.2 for the Aussie.
10:51 Ricciardo breaks the silence as he heads out on a new set of supersoft tyres.
10:49 Top ten: Vettel, Massa, Verstappen, Vandoorne, Sainz, Ocon, Stroll, Hulkenberg, Hamilton and Ricciardo.
10:48 The only driver yet to set a time is Alonso. He has done three laps and is sitting in his car.
10:43 Massa is out on the slicks but reports that the last two corners are "really really wet."
10:42 Ocon, still running the inters, moves up to sixth place. He is a whopping 3.2s down on Vettel's best.
10:37 Vettel returns to the track on a set of slicks, red supersofts for the Ferrari driver, and he goes quickest. A 1:45.960 for the German.
10:36 The only drivers without times on the board are Ericsson, Alonso and Grosjean. The latter, though, is out on track and on a flier.
10:34 Sainz briefly moved up to fourth place but Vandoorne has retaken it. And Hulkenberg goes sixth on his first timed lap.
10:33 Massa is up to second place, 0.249s down on Verstappen.
10:31 Sainz moves up to fifth place in the Renault. Not the best conditions to have to cope with when swapping teams but he is rising to the challenge. Hulkenberg has yet to set a time.
10:30 Verstappen is climbing out of his RB13 after his first run of the morning.
10:28 Vettel is up to second place, 0.350s off the pace, while Vandoorne is third. He is, however, 1.8s down.
10:25 Verstappen goes quickest with a 1;47.922 and reports that the prototype inters are "lovely."
10:21 Ocon adds his name to the list as he too gets it wrong and spins his way across the track.
10:17 And now Gelael is spinning across the track.
10:16 Ricciardo gets it wrong as he ran wide out of the final part of the high-speed esses that finish the first sector and lost it on the kerbs.
10:13 Hartley is back out on track for his first proper run.
10:10 Hamilton has gone quickest with a 1:50.146 ahead of Verstappen, Bottas and Ricciardo.
10:09 Although some of the bumps on the track were flattened ahead of this year's race, Raikkonen has reported that he "hit a big bump passing a car on the straight."
10:07 Bottas sets the morning's first lap time, a 1:50.529. He did get a bit sideways through the final corner.
10:06 Hamilton is at the end of the pit lane, practicing a start before heading out. Stroll, Verstappen and Ricciardo also head out and that's everyone now.
10:03 Romain Grosjean, sporting a helmet with an "I'm not moaning" message on it, reports that it is rather slippery out there.
10:02 Out goes Hartley in the Toro Rosso for his first lap as an official F1 driver.
10:00 Green light and off we go...
09:58 Vandoorne is eager to get out there as he's already at the end of the pit lane awaiting the start of FP1. He has a set of inters on his MCL32.
09:57 Interestingly Toro Rosso are running Sean Gelael instead of Kvyat in this session.
09:53 Okay onto today, it is a wet start as the rain came down earlier. Air temperature is just 19'C and the track is up to 23'C.
09:51 And lastly, Carlos Sainz is now a Renault driver having replaced the under-fire, and ultimately fired, Jolyon Palmer.
09:48 In other news, Brendon Hartley is making his F1 debut at age 27 with Toro Rosso. He's replacing Pierre Gasly this weekend while Daniil Kvyat is back with Toro Rosso - but it remains to be seen whether it will be his last race with the team.
09:44 Breaking news just in is that Max Verstappen has extended his Red Bull stay through to the end of 2020. So much for all that talk of him heading to Mercedes or Ferrari.
09:39 Onto the big news this weekend: Fernando Alonso has re-signed with McLaren. Yip, after all the speculation and whispers, he has decided to remain with McLaren with the team confirming him as Stoffel Vandoorne's 2018 team-mate. Alonso subsequently stated that it was a "long-term" deal so 2018 won't be his last. At least it may not be.
09:34 Lewis Hamilton could take another step towards greatness this weekend as the British driver could win the World title, his fourth. If he wins on Sunday and Sebastian Vettel is sixth or lower, the title will belong to Hamilton. The Mercedes driver, though, has downplayed his chances saying he expects a strong Ferrari this weekend. Vettel is the only driver aside from Hamilton to have won at COTA.
09:30 Welcome to the Circuit of the Americas, home of the United States Grand Prix, in Austin, Texas. All times are local.
