08 Oct 07:51 Hamilton retakes the lead, with team mate Bottas in P2.
08 Oct 07:41 Hamilton pits for the first time in the race.

08 Oct 07:37 Raikkonen grabs P6 after good move on the outside of Sergio Perez.
08 Oct 07:36 Hamilton leads Verstappen by around 4.6 seconds.
08 Oct 07:27 Valterri Bottas up to P4 after passing Ocon. It's Mercedes versus Red Bull at Suzuka.
08 Oct 07:22 Ricciardo makes a good move on Ocon around the outside for P3 at Turn 1.
08 Oct 07:22 VSC over.
08 Oct 07:19 Hamilton leads Verstappen by 2.8 seconds at the front of the pack.
08 Oct 07:18 Virtual Safety Car is out.
08 Oct 07:18 Kimi Raikkonen up to P8 after overtaking Nico Hulkenberg.
08 Oct 07:18 Marcus Ericsson into the wall, that's a biggish shunt.
08 Oct 07:13 Is this the critical moment the F1 title race swings into Hamilton's hands?
08 Oct 07:11 Breaking! Ferrari engineers inform Vettel must retire his car!
08 Oct 07:10 We're back racing after Sainz's car is cleared from the track.
08 Oct 07:06 Vettel is down in P6, his car has a spark plug issue, oh dear Ferrari!
08 Oct 07:06 Safety Car been deployed.
08 Oct 07:05 Hang on! Max Verstappen is on a rampage, he passes Ricciardo and Vettel on the opening lap.
08 Oct 07:04 And they're away at Suzuka! Hamilton leads Vettel.
07 Oct 09:07 Lewis Hamilton will start on pole position tomorrow with team mate Valterri Bottas in P2.
07 Oct 09:04 Less than a minute left in Q3, will Hamilton hang onto P1?
07 Oct 08:59 Vettel now in P2, just 0.452 seconds behind Ham.
07 Oct 08:58 Bottas in provisional P2 and Verstappen in P3, 1.6 secs off pole.
07 Oct 08:57 Hamilton is quickest in Q3 with a 1:27.345
07 Oct 08:54 And we're into the final qualifying session for the Japanese GP.
FINISH That's that from us today. Thank you for your company and do join us again in a fortnight for the United States Grand Prix. Cheers.
FINISH Hamilton's fourth Japanese GP win allows him to open a 59-point lead over Vettel in the standings.
FINISH That was a very good end to the race, but Hamilton held firm, and he was helped by both Massa and Alonso.
FINISH Raikkonen is the only Ferrari to see the chequered flag as he comes home in P6 ahead of Ocon, Perez, Magnussen, Grosjean and Massa, who held off alonso.
FINISH Hamilton holds off Verstappen to win the Japanese Grand Prix. Ricciardo holds onto P3 as he finishes just ahead of Bottas.
Lap 53 Alonso is on the rear wing of Massa, but no way through.
Lap 53 Verstappen finally moves past Massa and he can go chasing after Hamilton. Bottas is also not getting past Ricciardo.
Lap 53 Massa moves out of the way and allows Hamilton through. Alonso is under investigation for ignoring blue flags. Final lap.
Lap 52 Hamilton is still stuck behind Massa with Verstappen following suit.
Lap 52 Hamilton is really struggling to clear Massa and Verstappen is all over the back of him. Alonso moves out of the way of Hamilton.
Lap 52 Hamilton is now also caught behind the Massa-Alonso battle.
Lap 51 Maybe the battle for P1 is also on as Hamilton complains about vibration in his tyres. He is only 1.4s ahead of Verstappen.
Lap 51 The battle for P3 is on! Bottas puts in a new fastest lap of 1:33.144 and he is now only 1.4s behind Ricciardo.
Lap 50 Alonso is all over the back of Massa, who is struggling in P10.
Lap 50 Perez is less than one second behind Ocon and he wants the freedom to attack, but it would be silly as Force India will be a big loser should they make contact and crash out.
Lap 50 We are back up to racing speed and Hamilton is three seconds clear of Verstappen.
Lap 49 Sir Mo Farah is smiling in the Mercedes garage.
Lap 48 The Stroll incident has probably wrapped up the win for Hamilton as the lead is four seconds.
Lap 48 It looks like Stroll had a puncture just before he went off the track.
Lap 48 Hamilton's lead is 3.2s with the VSC deployed.
Lap 47 Looks like we will get a Virtual Safety Car. And it has now been deployed.
Lap 47 We have a Williams in the gravel and he comes back onto the track just as Ricciardo came around. It is Stroll and that was a nervous moment for Ricciardo.
Lap 46 Raikkonen is told 'you are clear to push now'. Not sure how much that will help as he is 18s behind Bottas and 25s ahead of Ocon.
Lap 46 It looks like there is a bit of a smile on Wolff's face in the Mercedes garage. It might have to do with Bottas as the Finn is now 3.5s behind Ricciardo.
Lap 45 Ocon looks like he has won the Force India battle as he has moved 1.4s clear of his team-mate Perez.
Lap 44 Bottas is making ground on Ricciardo as the gap is down to five seconds.
Lap 44 Hamilton is still 2.7s clear of Verstappen, who in turn has a 10s lead over Ricciardo.
Lap 43 There was a bit of contact between Massa and Hulkenberg, but no damage was done.
Lap 43 Massa leaves the door open for Magnussen and the Renault man makes his move on the inside and takes P8. Grosjean also takes advantage and Massa is now down in P10.
Lap 42 They are retiring Hulkenberg as the DRS flap is stuck.
Lap 42 Bad news for Hulkenberg as his DRS flap is open. He is forced to pit again and they are trying to punch it back down with their fists.
Lap 41 Palmer pits and rejoins in P13. It means the Massa train is now battling over P8.
Lap 40 Ocon makes his move as he sets his fastest lap and moves 1.4s clear of his Force India team-mate Perez.
Lap 40 Hamilton's lead is a steady 2.5s over Verstappen.
Lap 40 So Massa, Magnussen, Grosjean, Gasly and Hulkenberg battling over P10. Hulkenberg gets the job done on Gasly and is up to P12.
Lap 39 Hulkenberg pits from P6 and that sets Ocon and Perez free. The Renault driver came out behind Gasly.
Lap 39 Perez tells the team that 'Ocon has to pick up the pace, he is too slow', but the team's reply is 'hold Chico, hold'.
Lap 38 Gasly is told that 'if we can overtake these cars in front there is a point available as Massa is struggling'. Gasly is behind Grosjean, who is behind Magnussen, who is behind Massa.
Lap 37 Hamilton is keeping the lead at the front to just under three seconds.
Lap 37 Magnussen is also putting pressure on Massa while Grosjean and Gasly are not too far behind. They are fighting over P10.
Lap 36 Perez is now within DRS range of his team-mate Ocon. They are battling over P7.
Lap 35 Hulkenberg and Palmer are the only drivers who are yet to stop in this race.
Lap 35 Alonso is all over the back of Stroll while Vandoorne is looking to join this battle over P14.
Lap 34 Looks like we are in for a good finish to this race as Verstappen is 2.8s behind Hamilton while Ricciardo is nearly 10s adrift of these two.
Lap 33 Raikkonen is up to P5 as he ducks on the inside of Hulkenberg into Turn 1.
Lap 33 Hamilton, meanwhile, tells the team 'I'm struggling with my rear tyres'.
Lap 32 Verstappen asks 'are the tyres looking good?' and the reply is 'all okay'.
Lap 32 So it was job done from Bottas as he helped Hamilton to open a three-second lead over Verstappen while he also managed to stay ahead of Raikkonen.
Lap 31 Bottas has rejoined in fourth place behind Ricciardo.
Lap 31 Verstappen has been freed and he can now chase after Hamilton.
Lap 30 'So box, box, box' is the call from the Merc pit wall to Bottas.
Lap 30 Slight lock up from Bottas, but Verstappen fails to take advantage as he was not close enough.
Lap 30 Verstappen is not close enough in the start-finish straight and that allows Hamilton to open up a 2.3s lead.
Lap 29 So this has worked out well for Mercedes as Bottas has managed to hold up Verstappen slightly, but the DRS zone is coming up.
Lap 29 Raikkonen pits and it's a good move from Ferrari as he comes out ahead of Ocon, which puts him in sixth place.
Lap 29 Bottas managed to stay ahead of Verstappen in the DRS zone.
Lap 28 Bottas moves aside at the chicane and allows Hamilton through. Will Verstappen get the job done on the home-straight finish?
Lap 28 Hamilton has told his team that his team-mate is not helping.
Lap 28 Verstappen is now within DRS range of Hamilton.
Lap 28 Bottas stays out, for now at least.
Lap 27 How quickly will Bottas allow his team-mate through? And will he hold up Verstappen? Or will Merc pit him and just move him out of the way?
Lap 27 Bottas leads the race by 1.2s with second-placed Hamilton 1.6s ahead of Verstappen.
Lap 26 Ricciardo pits from the lead and that moves Bottas into the lead.
Lap 26 Pretty gracious stuff from Vettel, refusing to blame the team and vowing to go flat out in the final few races.
Lap 26 Perez gets the job down just before the hairpin.
Lap 25 Perez now has a look on the inside of Palmer, but no way through. Another look on the inside, but again no way through.
Lap 25 Fastest lap from Verstappen of 1:33.813 and he is now just 1.8s behind Hamilton.
Lap 24 Ocon has another look on the outside of Palmer, but the Renault man holds firm in the final corner. However, there is nothing Palmer can do in the DRS zone.
Lap 24 Verstappen gained about two seconds on Hamilton during the pit stops.
Lap 23 Ricciardo leads from Bottas with both still yet to stop.
Lap 23 Ocon is putting pressure on Palmer for P8.
Lap 23 Hamilton pits from the lead and he takes on a set of soft tyres. Clean stop and he rejoins ahead of Verstappen. Ricciardo has stayed out, for now at least.
Lap 22 Hamilton is now told to 'box, box'.
Lap 22 Verstappen has taken on the soft tyres and it's a good stop from the Red Bull team. It had to be a good one as he managed to emerge just ahead of Raikkonen. It was tight to be honest, but Verstappen just put the foot down and brushed the Ferrari aside.
Lap 22 Verstappen is told to box. Ocon, meanwhile, gets past Alonso.
Lap 21 The Force India mechanics are into the pits and it's for Ocon. There was a problem with one of the rear tyres and he rejoins behind Alonso after swapping for a set of softs.
Lap 20 Raikkonen is a lot closer to Perez on this lap and he goes on the inside on the start-finish straight and moves past the Force India and up into P6. Something for the Ferrari fans to cheer about.
Lap 20 Hamilton's lead is still in the four-second range. He has been told 'we are still on Plan A'.
Lap 19 Raikkonen is now all over the back of Perez. They are battling over P6, but the Ferrari is not close enough in the DRS zone.
Lap 18 The pit stop window is open and Massa ducks into the pit lane for a set of softs.
Lap 18 Vettel has made his way to the Ferrari pit wall and he gets a slap on the back from the team principal. Shrug of the shoulders from the German after the debrief.
Lap 17 Hamilton's lead is up to 4.5s with Verstappen 8s ahead of Ricciardo.
Lap 16 Vandoorne is the only driver who is within DRS range of another car as he is 0.4s behind Stroll, who is P15.
Lap 16 We could be in for another Force India battle as Ocon and Perez are separated by 1.9s.
Lap 15 Grosjean, Gasly and Palmer are the men just outside the points.
Lap 15 Here's a quick look at the top 10: Hamilton, Verstappen, Ricciardo, Bottas, Ocon, Perez, Raikkonen, Massa, Hulkenberg and Magnussen.
Lap 14 Hamilton's lead is back up to 3.9s while Ricciardo is 6.7s behind the second-placed Verstappen.
Lap 14 Raikkonen should get this done on this lap. Yep, easy as you like on the start-finish straight as the Finn went on the inside to move up to P7.
Lap 13 Raikkonen has caught up with his former team-mate Massa, but he is too far behind to make a move on the Williams at Turn 1.
Lap 12 Vettel's race is officially over as he has climbed out of the car and taken his gloves off.
Lap 12 At the front Hamilton's lead has been reduced to 3.1s while Ricciardo is another six seconds adrift.
Lap 12 Bottas is up to P4 as he moves past the Force India of Ocon at Turn 1.
Lap 11 Ocon is now under attack from Bottas, but Ricciardo has been freed and can go chasing after Verstappen.
Lap 11 We are racing again and Ricciardo is all over the back of Ocon. He completes the job on the start-finish straight.
Lap 11 The Ferrari mechanics are still working on Vettel's car and he might actually rejoin the race.
Lap 10 Vandoorne pits and puts on the softs. He rejoins behind Stroll in P16.
Lap 10 Hamilton is now four seconds clear of Verstappen while Ocon has dropped seven points off the top two.
Lap 10 The Virtual Safety Car has been deployed after the Ericsson incident. Shake of the head in the Sauber garage after Ericsson put his car in the barriers.
Lap 9 Raikkonen is up to P8 as he passes Hulkenberg at the penultimate corner.
Lap 9 No Safety Car for the Ericsson incident, just double yellow flags.
Lap 8 We have another car in the barriers and it is Marcus Ericsson.
Lap 7 While Hamilton is not pulling away from Verstappen, Ocon is holding up the rest of the chasing pack as Ricciardo and Bottas are right on his rear.
Lap 6 Vettel is still in the car by the way. DRS has been enabled.
Lap 6 Raikkonen is now up to P9 after passing the Haas of Magnussen, but the Dane is not giving up easily as he is staying on the Ferrari.
Lap 6 Back on track and a new fastest lap of 1:35.024 puts Hamilton 1.3s clear of Verstappen.
Lap 5 That could be the Championship for Vettel and Ferrari as he is rolled back into the Ferrari garage.
Lap 5 'Box Sebastian box', we are retiring the car! That is that.
Lap 5 At least Raikkonen is putting pressure on Gasly, well he has no passed the Toro Rosso man.
Lap 4 Vettel has no power and he is now under pressure from Massa. He has told the team that 'he still has the same issue'.
Lap 4 Hamilton away without any problems, but Vettel is still struggling and he has been overtaken by Perez.
Lap 3 Sainz has made the walk of shame back to the Toro Rosso garage. Safety Car in at the end of this lap.
Lap 3 Absolute shocker from Ferrari so far as Vettel's spark plug problem looks to be costing him and he has dropped to P6 while Raikkonen is down in 14th.
Lap 3 Sainz went off the track all by himself as he oversteered and went into the barriers. He did keep the engine going and tried to get back on the track, but the car was damaged.
Lap 2 It's Hamilton from Verstappen, Ocon, Ricciardo, Bottas, Vettel, Perez, Massa, Hulkenberg and Stroll.
Lap 2 The Safety Car has been deployed after the Sainz incident, he went back off.
Lap 2 Vettel has gone from second to sixth and he is struggling.
Lap 2 Vettel is struggling for speed as he is now under pressure from Ocon. And now Ocon has to defend against Ricciardo.
Lap 1 Vettel is caught napping at the hairpin and Verstappen moves up into P2. And now Raikkonen goes off the track after losing out to Hulkenberg.
Lap 1 Vandoorne is the big looser as he was on the grass and dropped down the grid. Sainz is also onto the gravel, but he kept the engine running is back on.
Lap 1 The lights go out at Suzuka and Hamilton makes a great getaway as he moves across to cover Vettel. Great start from Verstappen as well as he is ahead of Ricciardo.
14:00 The top 10 drivers are all on the supersofts except for Bottas, Hulkenberg and Raikkonen. Further down Ericsson, Wehrlein, Palmer and Sainz are also on the softs.
14:00 Hamilton leads the pack on the formation lap. They are all away without any problems, including Vettel.
13:56 Okay the drivers are in their cars and we are nearly good to get this show up and running.
13:52 The good news for Vettel is they think they have fixed it. It as problem with a spark plug.
13:50 We are 10 minutes away from the start and the Ferrari mechanics are still working on Vettel's car. We'll the good news is the cover is being put back on.
13:45 Time for the Japanese national anthem.
13:45 Oh dear! The engine cover is off Vettel's Ferrari and the mechanics are working on that car.
13:44 Fernando Alonso predicts that most of the drivers will go for one-stoppers.
13:41 Hamilton has told the team that it felt like the front tyres are overheating and he has asked the team if they can take 'more pressure off it'.
13:39 Some celeb spotting and four-time Olympic gold medallist Mo Farah is at the track today. He's wearing a Mercedes cap.
13:36 Current conditions: Air temp 26 degrees Celsius, track temp 43 degrees Celsius.
13:33 Vettel does have a good track record at Suzuka as he has won here four times, but all of those wins came with Red Bull. On the flip side, Mercedes have won the Japanese GP the last three years while Ferrari's last success here came in 2004 through Michael Schumacher.
13:31 This is the sixth time that Hamilton and Vettel have started together on the front row of the grid this season. The pressure is really on Vettel to get ahead as he has a 34-point gap to make up on the Merc man in the standings.
13:30 We are 30 minutes away from the start, in case you were not good at math, which means the pit lane is now open.
13:25 So back to the front and the sun is out and it is expected to be nice and hot during the race. This gives Ferrari a chance as Mercedes have struggled a bit in the heat this season.
13:21 Back to Palmer and the Briton says he is 'out to have fun' today and wants to 'go out on a high'.
13:18 So this is the final race, at least of the season, for Palmer while it is also a final home race for McHonda. Of course the two parties will go their separate ways next season with McLaren switching to Renault in 2018.
13:17 Now the big driver news of the week/weekend has been the merry-go-round involving Toro Rosso and Renault. Sainz will replace Palmer at the US Grand Prix, which means Kvyat gets another chance as he comes back in at STR alongside Gasly.
13:13 And in case you were wondering who is starting P11-P18, here you go: Nico Hulkenberg, Kevin Magnussen, Romain Grosjean, Pierre Gasly, Lance Stroll, Marcus Ericsson, Pascal Wehrlein and Jolyon Palmer.
13:10 Fernando Alonso was actually 10th fastest, but he was hit with his umpteenth penalty of the season for yet another engine change which has left Honda 'embarrassed' and he now starts P20. Next to him is Carlos Sainz, another driver who has been hit with a penalty.
13:08 Kimi Raikkonen was sixth fastest, but he was another who was hit by a penalty, so Esteban Ocon and Bottas occupy row three and then you have Sergio Perez and Felipe Massa, Stoffel Vandoorne and Raikkonen.
13:07 Hamilton is also the only driver will start in the position he qualified as his Merc team-mate Valtteri Bottas was second fastest in qualy, but he was hit with a five-place grid penalty for a gearbox change. That means Vettel starts P2 with the Red Bulls of Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen on the second row.
13:05 As for the grid, Hamilton starts in pole position for the 71st time in his career, but he is starting P1 at Suzuka for the first time after setting a new lap record of 1:27.319 during qualifying on Saturday.
13:03 Today's grand prix marks the 16th of the season and Lewis Hamilton will start the race with a 34-point lead over Sebastian Vettel while Mercedes are 118 points ahead of Ferrari in the Constructors' Championship.
13:00 Good morning/afternoon/evening (delete where applicable) and welcome to our live coverage of the 2017 Japanese Grand Prix from Suzuka.
16:07 Rounding off the top ten (for now before all the penalties are finalised) are Ocon, Perez, Massa, and Alonso. Join us for the race tomorrow! Cheers.
16:07 Ricciardo gets the better of Verstappen for P4. Raikkonen down in P6 and he has a five-place grid penalty to come too.
16:06 But only third fastest! He will start P2 though as Bottas ahead has a gearbox penalty.
16:05 Here goes Vettel...
16:04 And improves by 0.023s to keep a firm grip on pole...
16:03 Hamilton is a tenth up through the first sector...
16:02 Time for the final hot laps. Vettel has four tenths to find on his title rival for pole position...
15:58 Nobody can get close to Hamilton! Vettel is up to P2 but four tenths behind. Bottas has P3 for now, Ricciardo and Verstappen over a second off the pace. Still yet to see what Raikkonen can do after a small off at the second Degna.
15:57 Mercedes are going to be first to show their hand. Bottas sets a 1:27.986 but is immediately knocked down by Hamilton who goes three tenths quicker.
15:53 Here we go! Q3 is underway and Hamilton looks very much like the driver to beat. Suzuka is the only current circuit he has not qualified on pole at...
15:48 Q3 will start at 15:53...
15:47 Hamilton went fastest in the first two sectors...then backed out his lap completely. Ominous signs ahead of Q3.
15:56 A horror show, in fact, for Renault, with both Hulkenberg and Palmer out. Joining them on the sidelines are Vandoorne, Magnussen and Sainz.
15:45 Hulkenberg is among the first to drop out...
15:40 Firing up now for the final hot laps of Q2...
15:38 In the elimination zone: Alonso, Hulkenberg, Palmer, Magnussen and Sainz.
15:37 Massa is the penultimate driver to set a hot lap and is up to P8, but not for long as Perez takes that position for himself.
15:35 Bottas and Raikkonen are on soft tyres and slot in P3 and P6 respectively. Almost half a second between those two so this Mercedes car is really beginning to wake up now.
15:34 Vettel is six tenths behind in P2. A might lap from Hamilton and plenty more where that came from.
15:33 Hamilton's switched to the supers and is the first to smash the track record with a 1:27.819. It wasn't particularly clean, either.
15:30 Track is clear again and we have green lights for Q2. 15-minute session with a further five drivers set to be eliminated.
15:20 Grosjean's car is the process of being removed from track. Hopefully not too much longer to wait now for Q2.
15:17 Red flag! Grosjean is into the barriers and that is Q1 over. He has effectively knocked out himself, Gasly, Stroll, Ericsson and Wehrlein from the session.
15:16 Perez is being investigated after being accused of blocking by Stroll.
15:15 Two minutes of Q1 remaining...
15:15 Raikkonen is a bit out of sync due to his late start but has the track to himself now. He gets to within a tenth of Hamilton to go up to P2. He opted for the supers to start with.
15:14 Hulkenberg and Palmer are in P9 and P11 after their first runs, leaving Grosjean, Gasly, Stroll, Ericsson and Wehrlein in the elimination zone.
15:13 Here comes Sainz now and he is up to P11. Another change at the top, meanwhile. with Hamilton now into the 1:29.0 range.
15:12 We're still awaiting hot laps from Sainz, Palmer and Hulkenberg....
15:11 Max Verstappen dislodges Hamilton from top spot with a 1:29.1 on supersofts. Ricciardo is two tenths down in P5 and Raikkonen slots into P6.
15:10 Improvement from Vettel, now just 0.027s away from Hamilton's best but he remains in P3.
15:08 Bottas has kept it nice and tidy this time and is just 0.007s behind Hamilton. The Finn is on the quicker supersofts, though.
15:07 And Kimi is out of the garage. Phew!
15:05 Oooh! Another close shave for Bottas who almost loses his car again at the second Degna. "All ok", he coolly reports on team radio.
15:03 It's a 1:29.5 for Hamilton. What can Vettel do on the same compound? He's two tenths down on Hamilton after losing time in the final sector.
15:02 Still lots of work going on with Raikkonen's car. Time is running out! Meanwhile, Hamilton is beginning his first hot lap on soft tyres.
15:00 Here we go! Green lights and the first 18-minute session is underway. Five drivers will be eliminated here.
14:55 Qualifying is all set up for a duel between title rivals Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel. Bottas, Raikkonen out of the running with penalties and Red Bull bemoaning their straight line speed. Five minutes to go...
14:50 Only a slight 10 per cent risk of rain during qualifying. We're also set for a dry race tomorrow, too.
14:45 A sense of deja vu as Ferrari are frantically working away in the garage, this time on Kimi's car as opposed to Vettel's in Malaysia this time last weekend. The Scuderia are hopeful they can get the Finn out in time for Q1.
14:40 The penalties are racking up elsewhere, too, with 20-place grid penalties for Carlos Sainz and Jolyon Palmer and, of course, Fernando Alonso. The Spaniard has a 35-place grid drop after yet more new engine parts were fitted.
14:35 FP3 followed in the same vain as FP1 and FP2 as there was plenty of interruptions - high-profile crashes being the cause this time. Valtteri Bottas, who was quickest this morning, crashed out, and so did fellow Finn Kimi Raikkonen. Both have five-place grid penalties for new gearboxes, but Bottas confirmed change came yesterday.
14:30 Hello and welcome back to Suzuka for what promises to be a fascinating qualifying session. Q1 gets underway in 30 minutes.
13:00 The chequered flag is out with Bottas finishing quickest of all, and in the pits after his meeting with the barriers. Hamilton is second ahead of Vettel. That's it for now, join us in two hours for qualifying. Cheers.
12:56 Vettel goes green in the first two sectors but is unable to improve his time overall. He remains P3.
12:55 Verstappen goes fourth, Hulkenberg has improved to sixth, and Sauber remain dead last expected for Raikkonen.
12:54 Vettel is back out on a brand new set of the supersofts, which Ocon just used to go P4 ahead of Verstappen. But the Red Bull racer is on a qualy sim run himself so let's see how this plays out.
12:53 Sainz may be visiting the stewards later as replays show he left the pits under a red light. He did stop when he realised it was red but alas that may still be a penalty.
12:50 Grosjean is out on track on a set of supersofts, he is the only driver without a lap time on the board.
12:49 Hamilton is out on the supersoft tyres but they're already onto lap 4 as his earlier run was blighted by the two red flags. He's still sitting P2, 0.014s down on Bottas.
12:46 Palmer is up to P7 on his supersoft run.
12:45 Bottas and Hamilton's soft tyre times are still holding down the 1-2 ahead of Vettel, Verstappen, Alonso, Ricciardo, Perez, Ocon, Vandoorne and Hulkenberg.
12:42 Vettel is on a hot lap but it is by no means challenging Bottas's earlier time. He goes P3.
12:41 It is rather busy out there so drivers are having to back off to make space which of course means the chap behind has to do the same.
12:39 And we're back with drivers again heading out on the supersoft tyres.
12:35 Raikkonen lost it on the kerb much in the same way as Vettel's did but he was unable to catch it and into the barrier he went.
12:34 Red flag! Raikkonen is in the barrier at the second Degner.
12:32 19 of the 20 drivers are already out on track with all but Bottas, whose session is over, putting in the laps. And it is pretty much brand new supersofts all around.
12:31 Green light and the action resumes...
12:28 Session will restart at 12:31.
12:25 Red flag is still out with Magnussen, Grosjean and Ocon still without times on the board.
12:22 Red flags are out as marshals need to fix the astroturf.
12:21 Bottas was on a flier, and now he's running with a damaged right rear tyre. There are chunks of astroturf that have been lifted and bits of Mercedes lying near it. He got onto the astroturf, which dragged him onto the grass and he was pushed wide into the barrier.
12:20 Timesheets check: Bottas, Hamilton, Verstappen, Ricciardo, Alonso, Massa, Gasly, Stroll, Vettel and Raikkonen.
12:19 Vettel gets it wrong at the exit of Degner 2, clips the kerb and runs off the other side of the track and through the gravel. Ricciardo is off at Spoon but at least there is more run-off area there for the Red Bull driver.
12:15 Bottas takes P1 off Hamilton by 0.014s, Vettel has a bit of a lock up and Ricciardo's first hot lap with his T-wing puts him P3.
12:14 Troubles for Magnussen as his car in the pits and there's a mechanic sitting in it rather than the Dane as work goes on. Yesterday he had a water leak in FP1.
12:12 Still waiting for Verstappen, Perez and Ocon to put in a lap as they have yet to leave the pits this session.
12:11 Alonso and his brand new old engine are out and lapping, flying through the Esses. It is impressive watching these cars lap Suzuka. And it is a 1:30.926 for the Spaniard, putting him P3 on the supersoft tyres.
12:09 Lance Stroll gets it rather wrong at the hairpin but manages to avoid doing a Sainz. And we have another run of purples from Hamilton on his way to a 1:29.069.
12:08 Vettel makes his mark with a 1:33.6, which puts him P3 in the early running.
12:06 Vettel has returned to the action after a brief trip back to the Ferrari garage. He has the soft tyres bolted onto his SF70H.
12:05 That, though, is likely to be blitzed as here comes Hamilton on the soft tyres and he goes purple in all three sectors to set a 1:29.6.
12:04 Straight into the action, Gasly does a 1:33.0 on the supersoft tyres.
12:02 Ferrari are splitting strategy with Vettel out on the softs and Raikkonen the supersofts. A full lap for Vettel and the gearbox is still functioning - happy days!
12:01 Alonso, Pierre Gasly, Kevin Magnussen, Pascal Wehrlein, Vettel, Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean head out.
12:00 Green light and off we go on a damp Suzuka circuit - no rain but the track has yet to dry out.
11:55 Five minutes to the start...
11:46 There are also penalties for Sainz, a 20-place for an engine change, and Valtteri Bottas, five-place for a gearbox. As for Sebastian Vettel's gearbox, it will go into the car ahead of this practice so we'll know later if he is facing a penalty.
11:42 Only five drivers set times on Friday afternoon such was the rain, however, we did get in a full session in FP1 barring a brief stoppage for Carlos Sainz's crash. The Spaniard smashed into the barriers when he ran a bit wide at the exit of the hairpin. Sainz was okay, his car was not. Toro Rosso, though, were able to put it back together and Sainz covered one lap in the rain in FP2 just to check that everything was working.
11:37 Despite the change, the McLaren driver will still be running the old Honda spec 3.7 as the new spec 4.0 is not yet ready. Not ideal, and especially not at Honda's home race.
11:36 The big news overnight is that Fernando Alonso has been hit with a 35-place grid penalty after Honda changed his engine overnight. A hydraulic leak on Friday meant Honda were forced to change his power unit. The Japanese manufacturer opted to fit a completely new engine meaning an eighth ICE, 10th turbo and MGU-H, and eighth MGU-K, seventh battery, and sixth control electronics unit.
11:30 Good morning and welcome to a relatively dry Suzuka circuit. After Friday's biblical rain, it continued to fall overnight but it has now stopped and the track is drying out. Clouds overhead and more rain forecast for later today but nothing like Friday expected.
15:25 Alonso and Hamilton go for another out-lap, but that is as good as it gets. Hopefully the weather will improve tomorrow for qualifying! Join us again then.
15:19 A brief look at the track by Vandoorne in the McLaren before heading straight back into the garage. That appears to be it for today.
15:13 Just four timed laps on the board with 15 minutes of the session remaining. Many drivers opting to stay nice and dry in the garage.
15:10 Brief yellows as Lance Stroll goes off at Turn 1. He is able to take full advantage of the large run-off area though and is back on track.
15:08 Hamilton, who has won the last 8 grands prix in wet conditions, takes to the track like a duck to a water. He takes seven tenths out of Ocon's best.
15:06 Hamilton is out on track and is staying out well. Here comes his timed lap...
15:03 There we have it, a 1:49.5 from Ocon with Perez 1.8s behind.
15:01 But look at this! Esteban Ocon is going out for a timed lap!
15:00 Sebastian Vettel is out on track now...and straight back in. Thrilling.
14:56 Nobody is staying out for very long as the rain has returned, just Marcus Ericsson out there at the moment...
14:54 He is joined the Renault boys: Nico Hulkenberg and Jolyon Palmer.
14:52 God bless Kimi. He is out on track and getting to work on clearing some of that standing water.
14:50 Anyone? Anyone at all?
14:45 There is the green light. Who is going to be first and brave these wet conditions?
14:38 Out of nowhere, the session will restart at 14:45! The rain appears to have stopped for the time being...
14:30 An hour left of the session and the Safety Car is going out for a second inspection. There is hope that the heavy rain will ease off shortly, but there is so much standing water to clear.
14:18 "I can see this session being a wash-out, it's too dangerous to send out the cars in these conditions," says Red Bull boss Christian Horner. Oh joy.
14:01 A reminder that this is not like qualifying where the clock stops and we wait for it to get dry. The session clock will continue to tick down for the next 90 minutes.
14:00 It's not good news, I'm afraid. It is absolutely throwing it down in Suzuka at the start has been delayed 'infinitely'. Mores news when we get it.
13:50 There was big crash for Carlos Sainz, who already faces a 20-grid penalty this weekend, but he emerged from the car ok after losing control at the Spoon curve.
13:45 Sebastian Vettel drew first blood at Suzuka as Ferrari pray that FP1 will be the start of a drama-free weekend. Lewis Hamilton and Daniel Ricciardo rounded off the top three.
13:30 Hello and welcome back to a rather wet Suzuka. FP2, we hope, will get underway in 30 minutes' time.
11:30 So that's it for FP1 for the Japanese GP, a P1 for Vettel, a huge crash for Sainz, and the forecast rain falling. Join us in two hours for FP2. Cheers.
11:27 One by one the drivers head back into the pits with Raikkonen the last man in.
11:26 Massa is told that it is "raining quite heavy in Turns 11 and 12" so watch what you do. he pits.
11:24 Raikkonen's brakes are overheating and he is told to "lift off" to cool them down a bit.
11:23 Hulkenberg's Renault is being fitted with a new front wing as Renault evaluate updates.
11:18 Magnussen is told to slow down and return to the pits, "same problem as before" so that's another water pressure issue for the Haas driver.
11:16 But that was just a drive-through for Vettel and he's back out on track to start lap number 4 on the supersoft tyres.
11:15 With the rain coming down a bit heavier, although by no means pouring, many of the drivers are heading back into the pits including Vettel.
11:11 Vettel is flying... purple, purple, and not purple but he goes P1 with a 1:29.166.
11:10 Alonso is up to P10, one place behind Vandoorne as Raikkonen stays fourth despite improving his lap time to a 1:29.
11:09 Vettel and Raikkonen head out on a brand new set of supersoft tyres.
11:08 With the rain beginning to fall several drivers are quickly out including Ricciardo, Alonso and Gasly - the only Toro Rosso still in this session.
11:07 And we're green again...
11:04 Sainz has arrived back in the pits and does his best to dodge the reporters as he makes his way inside the Toro Rosso garage.
11:02 The only lap at the moment is the recovery vehicle carrying Sainz's car back to the pits.
10:59 The red flags are still out as the marshals clear the track of any debris from Sainz's car.
10:54 Sainz gives a wave as he makes his way to the medical car.
10:52 He touched the kerb and astroturf on the exit of the hairpin, slid across the track and smashed into the barrier.
10:51 Red flag! Sainz has had a huge crash into the wall and the front end of his STR is shattered. He says he is "okay" but doesn't know what happened.
10:50 Verstappen is told to change a setting by Red Bull but informs the team that the "power cuts off" when he does that. Hmm, don't do it !
10:48 Raikkonen isn't happy with the rear of his SF70 and tells Ferrari: "If anything, we've made it worse."
10:47 Magnussen is back out lapping and jumps up to ninth place on the soft tyres.
10:44 Problems for Magnussen as he has been sitting in the pits as a "water pressure issue" was investigated. Good news is Haas are putting the car back together now.
10:41 Vettel is up to second place on the soft tyres, just 0.042s down on Hamilton.
10:37 An off for Verstappen as the rear end of his RB13 steps out.
10:36 Hamilton does make the most of the new tyres and goes quickest, 1:29.377.
10:35 Bottas is unable to maximise the pace of the new tyres and stays third, he did have a moment under the bridge as once again he ran wide.
10:33 Bottas and Hamilton have both left the Mercedes garage with a brand new set of supersofts bolted onto their W08s, this could - and should - be quick!
10:30 The dropzone after the first 30 minutes: Gasly, Grosjean, Magnussen, Wehrlein and Ericsson. Life is not good if you're a Sauber driver!
10:29 Alonso is up to seventh place on the supersoft tyres but is still two seconds down on Ricciardo's P1 time.
10:28 New team, new car, new driver in P1 as Ricciardo hits the front with a 1:29.541. He is using the supersoft rubber.
10:24 Stroll is not happy with his team-mate Massa and tells Williams: "He got in my way that lap, I don't know why."
10:23 Mercedes continue to hold down the 1-2 with Hamilton two-tenths up on Bottas while Raikkonen is now third ahead of Vettel, Verstappen and Ricciardo. Ocon is best of the rest.
10:18 News on Sainz, his STR has been fitted with a new engine ahead of this weekend's race so he is facing a 20-place grid penalty.
10:17 Vettel has leapfrogged the Red Bulls to run P3 on the soft tyres as we now have 16 times on the board.
10:14 Hamilton is back on top, a 1:30.042.
10:12 Purple, purple and P1 for Bottas with a 1:30.517. And then a hairy moment as he runs it a bit wide and kicks up some serious dirt.
10:11 Verstappen jumps up to second running the supersoft tyres to Mercedes' soft choice.
10:10 Hamilton is down to a 1:31.072. "We are seeing a couple of little drop-outs on the rear wing but we are happy for you to stay out and maximise dry running," Mercedes tell Hamilton.
10:09 Gasly is back in the pits as he completed his installation lap with Halo and now it has to come off.
10:06 A 1:31.544 for Hamilton - that's 0.004s shy of Raikkonen's record!
10:04 Verstappen has joined the action while Hamilton looks like he's ready for business as he passes Ricciardo and Stroll and starts a flying lap.
10:02 Massa, Bottas, Ocon,Stroll and Hamilton head out for their installation laps leaving just Ricciardo, Perez and verstappen in the pits. With that Ricciardo and Perez head out.
10:01 Sainz leads out Vettel with Pascal Wehrlein, Jolyon Palmer, Pierre Gasly, Marcus Ericsson, Kevin Magnussen, Raikkonen, Romain Grosjean and Hulkenberg out immediately. And now here comes Alonso and Vandoorne.
10:00 Green light and off we go...
09:54 Vandoorne's MCL32 was fitted with a Halo earlier but it has been removed as McLaren home to maximise his time out on track while it is still dry.
09:52 The air temperature is 19'C, track is up to 25'C, and it is dry but rain is forecast throughout today's play.
09:49 Onto Vettel's gearbox, which was given a pounding by Lance Stroll in the wake - yip the wake - of the Malaysian GP. The duo crashed on the cool down lap, both blaming the other. Ferrari and Vettel believe the gearbox survived but will know more once it is fitted to the car.
09:46 Further back this is a home race for McLaren's soon-to-be-ex engine partner Honda which has caused a conundrum for the team. Honda have an upgrade with more power available but taking it means a back of the grid start for Fernando Alonso and/or Stoffel Vandoorne. Not ideal at a home race.
09:41 Looking at the championship it is very much Lewis Hamilton's title to lose as he holds a 34-point advantage over Sebastian Vettel with five races remaining. Valtteri Bottas is third, 25 points off the pace. Next in line are Daniel Ricciardo, Kimi Raikkonen, Malaysian GP winner Max Verstappen, Sergio Perez, Esteban Ocon, Carlos Sainz and Nico Hulkenberg.
09:35 Let's start with tyres. Pirelli believe the Suzuka lap record could fall this weekend as they have opted to bring their supersoft tyres. "It’s very possible that we will see another lap record fall and some truly impressive maximum g-force loadings," said Pirelli's head of car racing Mario Isola. Kimi Raikkonen holds the all-time lap record at the Japanese track having posted a 1:31.540 back in 2005.
09:30 Good morning, or evening, or even night depending on where you are in the world. Welcome to Suzuka, the home of the Japanese GP. All times are local.
