03 Sep 14:05 Brilliant start by Verstappen, up five places already.
03 Sep 14:05 Bottas retakes P4 from Raikkonen, wheel-to-wheel stuff!
03 Sep 14:05 Raikkonen passes the Mercedes of Bottas and into P4.
FINISH That's it from us today. Thank you for your company and do join us in two weeks for the Singapore Grand Prix. Before we go, Hamilton now leads the standings by three points after claiming the first back-to-back wins of the season. Ciao.
FINISH Driver of the day will certainly go to Ricciardo who came from P19 to finish fourth.
FINISH It was a pretty easy race for Hamilton and Mercedes while Vettel and Ferrari were not at the races today.
FINISH So it is Hamilton, Bottas, Vettel, Ricciardo, Raikkonen, Ocon, Stroll, Massa, Perez and Magnussen for the points.
FINISH Ocon comes home in sixth place, but will Stroll hold off Massa and here comes Perez as well. Stroll is P7 ahead of Massa with Perez P9 while Verstappen takes the final point.
FINISH Ricciardo finishes P4 and Raikkonen is P5. Who will be P6?
FINISH Contact between Massa and Stroll as they battle for P7.
FINISH Hamilton wins the Italian GP for the fourth time and the victory puts him ahead of Vettel in the Championship. The three-time World Champion is followed home by Bottas with Vettel taking P3.
Lap 53 We are on the final lap and Hamilton has the win wrapped up with Bottas in second place. Will Vettel hold off Ricciardo? Certainly looks that way.
Lap 52 Alonso's miserable afternoon comes to an end as he is also told to retire the car. He was running in P15.
Lap 52 Ericsson, who is running last, is told to retire his Sauber. His team-mate Wehrlein is P17.
Lap 51 Ricciardo is now 4.1s behind Vettel. Doesn't look like he will pull it off. No further action will be taken over the Verstappen-Magnussen incident.
Lap 50 Fastest lap from Hamilton now and it's a 1:23.542, but Ricciardo goes better with a 1:23.361.
Lap 49 Magnussen is now having a moan after his scrap with Verstappen. The Dane feels the Red Bull driver didn't give him enough space and he was forced to go off the track. The issue is now under investigation
Lap 48 Hamilton leads by 4.8s with Vettel another 30s adrift.
Lap 47 Ricciardo's pace has dropped slightly, but he has still managed to reduce the gap to Vettel to six seconds.
Lap 47 Verstappen is within a second of Magnussen and they are in the DRS zone. He completes the move at the first corner.
Lap 46 Verstappen is up to P11 as he overtakes Kvyat. Next up is Magnussen and that would put him into the points.
Lap 46 Mercedes have confirmed that both their drivers have had their engines turned down for quite a while. It has been a walk in the park for the team.
Lap 45 Fastest lap of 1:23.915 from Ricciardo puts him 8.8s behind Vettel.
Lap 44 Hamilton reports that 'it feels like he lost a bit of power on that lap'. He remains 3.5s ahead of Bottas.
Lap 44 Ricciardo has been told that he was one second faster than Vettel on the previous lap and he is now about 10s behind the Ferrari man. Can he pull it off?
Lap 43 Less than 10 laps to go and Hamilton leads Bottas by 3.5s while Vettel is another 25s behind.
Lap 43 Ricciardo has been told 'next up is Vettel'. The Ferrari man is 11s ahead, but he's not having a very good afternoon so far.
Lap 42 Ricciardo goes on the inside of Raikkonen and he is up to P4. Sorry, I made a mistake earlier and said they were battling over P5. Oops. Back to Dan Ric, another brilliant move and the Red Bull mechanics appreciated this.
Lap 41 Stroll overtakes the Sauber, who has been lapped, but he had a massive lock-up while doing so. His Williams team-mate is not too far behind.
Lap 40 Ricciardo is now just 1.5s behind Raikkonen in fifth place. This is a storming drive from the Red Bull driver.
Lap 39 Alonso is not over the Palmer thing. He asks the team 'where is Palmer?' and the reply is 'he has retired'. Alonso leaves us with this beauty 'karma'.
Lap 38 Ricciardo's stop was just 2.2s and he comes out ahead of the Ocon-Stroll-Massa scrap. The Red Bull driver is P5 after starting 16th on the grid.
Lap 38 Hamilton's lead is 3.8s over Bottas while Ricciardo is 17s adrift in third place. Ricciardo, though, finally pits.
Lap 37 Hulk fights back at the second chicane, but the Torpedo is having none of that.
Lap 37 Hulkenberg needs to be careful though as Kvyat is on the charge in P12. Well look at that, Kvyat goes on the inside and the Russian is up to P11.
Lap 36 Magnussen is coming under pressure from Hulkenberg. They are battling over P10.
Lap 36 Verstappen and Grosjean made contact a lap ago and the Frenchman wasn't happy. The stewards have 'noted this'.
Lap 35 Vandoorne looks like is struggling. He reports that he has no power and the reply is 'back off Stoffel, back off'. He heads into the pit. At first they look like they will try to fix it, but he takes the steering wheel off and gets out of the car.
Lap 34 Bottas finally pits and he rejoins behind his team-mate. Ricciardo is third, but he is yet to pit.
Lap 33 Perez is next to pit, but it is a slow one of 4.1s and he is out in P9.
Lap 33 Hamilton also pits and he rejoins behind Bottas, but he is just ahead of Alonso, who of course, is a lap down.
Lap 32 Vettel is the first to blink from the top three drivers as he pits from third place. He takes on the softs and rejoins in P4, but he is behind the scrapping Sauber drivers.
Lap 32 Palmer is told that he needs to box as they have to retire the car. I'm sure Alonso will be happy about that. Alonso is once again shouting something at his race engineer.
Lap 31 Ocon still has Stroll in his rear mirrors. Stroll tries to go on the outside, but no way past the Force India. Difficult as it is Mercedes power v Mercedes power.
Lap 30 Hamilton's lead over Bottas is still 4.5s while Vettel is another 18s adrift in third place.
Lap 29 Verstappen pits for a second time. Not going well for the Red Bull man, but it looks like he might see the chequered flag.
Lap 29 Stroll has Ocon in his sights. They scrapping over P7. Raikkonen is a bit further up the track.
Lap 28 Palmer has taken his penalty and he rejoined in P17. Alonso is P11. Verstappen is putting pressure on Sainz, who is P16.
Lap 27 Applause from the Ferrari mechanics after Raikkonen's move on Ocon. Vettel complains that his tyres are falling away.
Lap 27 Here comes Raikkonen on Ocon again on the home straight finish. He goes on the outside at the first chicane and he finally gets the job done. Ocon fights back at the second chicane, but no way past the Ferrari.
Lap 26 If you are wondering about Verstappen, he is down in P17 and he admits he is not making up much ground.
Lap 26 Ferrari are just not making up any ground on the Mercedes cars as Hamilton is 21s ahead of Vettel in third place.
Lap 25 Massa is up to P9 after moving past Vandoorne. The other McLaren driver, Alonso, is still upset about the Palmer penalty.
Lap 24 Suggestions that it is going so well for Hamilton that Mercedes are thinking about saving the engine already.
Lap 24 Here is Raikkonen on Ocon, but he can't get the job done. Ricciardo, meanwhile, is told to push. He is 16s behind Vettel in third place.
Lap 23 Bottas is asked about the tyres and he replies 'no problem, it's stable'.
Lap 23 Stroll has a go at Vandroone, but he can't make it stick. He is losing ground on the Ocon-Raikkonen battle. He finally gets the job done a couple of turns later.
Lap 22 Hamilton didn't look like he lost time after hitting the curb/gravel as he is still 4.5s ahead. Ocon gets ahead of Vandoorne and Raikkkonen follows suit.
Lap 21 Alonso is told that Palmer has a five-second penalty and his reply/shout is 'five-seconds is a joke'.
Lap 21 Hamilton's lead might come down in a bit as he was onto the sand on one of his previous laps. Doesn't look like there was major damage to his car.
Lap 20 It is pretty easy for the top three as Hamilton is four second ahead of Bottas, who in turn is 11 seconds ahead of Vettel.
Lap 19 Palmer has received a five-second penalty following that incident involving Alonso.
Lap 18 If you were wondering why Raikkonen didn't get ahead of Ocon during the pit stops, he had a problem in the pits, nothing major, but that cost him some time. Stroll now pits and he also has an issue with the left rear and the Williams driver comes out behind Ocon and Raikkonen.
Lap 18 Palmer is under investigation for leaving the track and gaining an advantage. And yes, Alonso did have a moan after their coming-together.
Lap 17 Ocon responds to the Raikkonen pit stop and he comes out ahead of the Ferrari driver. Meanwhile, Ricciardo has caught up with Perez and he goes on the inside of the Mexican to move up to P6.
Lap 16 Raikkonen pits from P6 and puts on the soft tyres. He rejoins in P11, just ahead of Palmer.
Lap 16 Hamilton sets a new fastest lap of 1:24.928 at the front and his lead over Bottas is 3.4s.
Lap 15 Alonso and Palmer has a coming-together further down the grid. They are scrapping over P12. Doesn't look like either car picked up any major damage. Palmer is P12 and Alonso P13.
Lap 15 Okay, Raikkonen is now right behind Stroll, who is on the rear of Ocon's Force India.
Lap 14 Back to the Ocon-Stroll battle for P4, the Williams driver just cannot get close enough to make a move. Raikkonen, meanwhile, is told to get closer to the battle between Ocon and Stroll. Kimi shouts something back about a problem he has.
Lap 13 Vandoorne is catching up with Kvyat, who is P10. Can he? Will the Honda power give him a boost to get ahead of the Toro Rosso?
Lap 13 By the way, Hulkenberg was the first driver to pit, well outside of Verstappen, who was forced to pit due to a puncture.
Lap 12 Stroll is fighting back against Ocon and he is within one second of the Force India driver. Should be easy in the DRS zone. Raikkonen is 1.3s adrift of this scrap.
Lap 11 The stewards have opted to take no further action over the Verstappen-Massa coming together at Turn 1.
Lap 10 Ricciardo is asked about the balance and he replies that 'it is settling'. The Red Bull driver is P9 and three seconds behind Perez.
Lap 9 Bottas is keeping Hamilton honest at the front as the gap is down to 2.8s while Vettel is roughly seven seconds adrift in third place.
Lap 8 If you were wondering about the back of the grid, Verstappen is still in P20 and ahead of him are Grosjean, Wehrlein, Ericsson, Palmer, Alonso, Sainz, Vandoorne, Hulkenberg and Kvyat.
Lap 8 Here is Vettel on Ocon and he has DRS. He moves up to P3 with a pretty easy move. Meanwhile, Raikkonen complains about the brakes. The Finn is still under pressure from Massa.
Lap 7 Raikkonen misses a chicane and loses some time on Stroll. The Ferrari man was right behind the Williams driver, but now the other Williams driver Massa has made up ground on him.
Lap 7 Verstappen is flying as he sets a new fastest lap of 1:25.820 on the super soft tyres.
Lap 6 It is pretty easy for Hamilton at the front at the moment as he leads by 3.4s from Bottas, who is another 3.2s ahead of Ocon.
Lap 6 Vettel is up to P4 after passing Stroll at Ascari. He's not too far away from Ocon in third place.
Lap 5 Okay so the top 10 is: Hamilton, Bottas, Ocon, Stroll, Vettel, Raikkonen, Massa, Perez, Magnussen and Kvyat.
Lap 5 Bottas has managed to get past Ocon and he is now up to P2. It was another pretty straightforward move from the Mercedes driver on the Force India man. Merc 1-2.
Lap 4 Looks like it was a pass from Vettel on Raikkonen. Verstappen is into the pit lane and he needs fresh tyres and a new front wing. Race control is looking into the incident involving Verstappen and Massa.
Lap 4 Vettel has moved past Raikkonen. Not sure if it was a pass or a team order, but the German is now up to P5.
Lap 3 Yes, Verstappen and Massa made contact and the Dutchman was not happy.
Lap 3 Versappen has a puncture after his tangle with Massa.
Lap 3 DRS has been enabled and now it should be easy for Bottas on Stroll. He goes on the inside at the first chicane and moves up to P3. Massa and Verstappen are wheel-to-wheel.
Lap 2 Hamilton is away at the front with the lead closing in on 2s, but it's pretty close between Ocon, Stroll and Bottas. Here comes Bottas on Stroll. He tries to go on the inside, but that door closes pretty quickly.
Lap 2 Bottas has a go at Raikkonen and the Mercedes driver gets ahead at Parabolica, but Kimi fights back and they are wheel-to-wheel. Bottas powers away eventually.
Lap 1 Hamilton leads from Ocon, Stroll, Raikkonen, Bottas, Vettel, Massa, Verstappen, Perez and Magnussen.
Lap 1 It's lights out and Hamilton pulls away from Stroll while Ocon puts pressure on the Williams man. Vettel has lost a place. Perez has also made up some places, but his car has some damage. It's Raikkonen v Bottas and it's teh Ferrari man who comes out on top.
14:02 Let's go racing at Monza!
14:01 Just a look at the tyre selections, 16 drivers are on the super softs with only Verstappen, Ricciardo, Palmer and Alonso on the softs.
14:00 Hamilton gets us underway with the formation lap. They are all away without any problems, I think. Alonso took quite a while to get away, but he's up and running.
13:57 It should be a one-stopper for most drivers.
13:53 Bad news, I'm afraid, coming from Race Control. Risk Of Rain For This Session: 0%
13:47 To be honest, that wasn't the best rendition of the Italian anthem, but here comes the flyover to take our minds off that.
13:46 Okay, time for one of our favourite anthems, Fratelli d'Italia. We know you are humming along.
13:43 Sticking with Stroll, he is the youngest driver to start on the front row of the grid, having qualified P4 and pushed up to P2 because of all those penalties.
13:41 In case you were wondering about this, and I know you were, the top teams like Ferrari are wheeling their drivers to their grid positions, while poor old Stroll is being pushed. You know you need to keep those tyres fresh.
13:38 The grid is starting to fill up quite nicely and drivers/cars are being pushed into position.
13:35 It will be pretty bright on the track today, well at the back at least, as McLaren's drivers are wearing bright, orange overalls to celebrate one of their sponsors' 40th anniversary and 20 years with the team.
13:33 Back to the penalties, nine drivers have been given penalties.
13:32 Quite a few drivers are opting not to do practice starts as they leave the pit lane for the first time.
13:30 The pit lane is now open and the drivers are starting to make their way to the grid. Hopefully they won't be confused about their positions due to so many changes.
13:27 So Hamilton and Grosjean are the only drivers starting in the same place that they qualified in yesterday...well, Grosjean didn't really qualify, but you know what I mean. Apparently the penalties are totalling 150 for the day. Someone worked that out.
13:25 Yet more changes to the grid. Official grid from the FIA shows that Perez will start P10. This is the same driver who was 11th fastest in qualy and then received a five-place grid penalty. Not even going to try to work all that out.
13:22 And now onto Ferrari. The Prancing Horse haven't won their home race since 2010 when Fernando Alonso marked his first season with the team with victory at Monza. Much like McLaren and Honda in 2015, Ferrari had hoped that it was start of a great era, but that also didn't end very well.
13:19 Sticking with Alonso/Honda/McLaren, reports suggest they could announce as early as Monday, that is tomorrow if you didn't know, that they will end their relationship with Honda. Not going to lie, it feels like only yesterday when they announced the return to Honda with so much fanfare with Alonso partnering Jenson Button. It just hasn't worked out.
13:16 Couple of questions ahead of the race. Will Verstappen see the chequered flag? Will Ocon and Perez stay out of each other's way? Can Alonso go the whole race without having a moan? Can Ferrari break their Monza drought?
13:13 That really was a lot to write. Feel like I need my first break of the day.
13:09 After Hamilton and Stroll, the rest of the grid looks like this: Esteban Ocon, Valtteri Bottas, Kimi Raikkonen, Sebastian Vettel, Felipe Massa, Daniil Kvyat, Kevin Magnussen, Marcus Ericsson, Pascal Wehrlein, Sergio Perez, Max Verstappen, Nico Hulkenberg, Carlos Sainz, Daniel Ricciardo, Jolyon Palmer, Stoffel Vandoorne, Fernando Alonso and Romain Grosjean.
13:05 Well, Lewis Hamilton proved to be the rain master again in qualifying as he claimed an historic 69th pole position, to pass the great Michael Schumacher's mark of 68. Max Verstappen was second fastest while his Red Bull team-mate Daniel Ricciardo was P3 with Lance Stroll P4. However, the two Red Bull drivers were two of many who received penalties. It means Williams rookie Stroll will start P2.
13:03 As already mentioned, qualifying was a bit chaotic on Saturday. It was wet, wet, wet. We could make a lame joke about a Scottish band from the 80s here, but we won't stoop to that level today.
13:01 We'll bring you up to speed with the grid in a moment, but we know you want to get a weather updated after yesterday's wild and wet qualifying session. Not sure if this is good news or bad news for you, but it looks like we are in for a dry race today.
13:00 Greetings and welcome to our live coverage of the 2017 edition of the Italian Grand Prix at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza. Today's race marks the 13th race of season.
16:40 He is joined on the front row by Lance Stroll with both Ferraris down the field and well off the pace in qualy. What drama! Join us for the race tomorrow.
16:38 But it's Lewis Hamilton who makes history, becoming the all-time leading pole-sitter with 69 poles and moving one clear of Michael Schumacher.
16:37 Stroll up to P3! Wow!
16:36 Raikkonen only good enough for P7!
16:35 Ocon and Stroll in the lofty heights of P3 and P5 at the moment!
16:32 Now Hamilton drops into the 1:34 region to extend his gap again at the top. Big trouble for the Ferraris though with Vettel and Raikkonen down in P8 and P10 respectively! Their car is looking a real handful in these conditions.
16:30 Hamilton now takes provisional pole in the doom and gloom, but is knocked off top spot by Ricciardo with an almighty lap.
16:28 Verstappen's decision to go out on full wets at the start is rewarded with a fastest time of 1:36.113. Ricciardo is three tenths slower in P2 but neither can take pole as they have engine penalties to come.
16:25 A real scrap for track position as Ricciardo squeezes Vettel out at Lesmo. It's too wet now for inters and the two Mercs are in for the blue-striped tyre.
16:24 This 12-minute session is going to be a bit nip and tuck. The rain is getting heavier as the green light shows for the final time today.
16:16 Out in Q2: Perez, Hulkenberg, Alonso, Kvyat, Sainz.
16:13 Vandoorne jumps to P7 as Hamilton goes eight tenths quicker overall with an ultra-smooth 1:35.344.
16:11 It's raining again at some parts of the track, just to make life even trickier.
16:08 Bottas finally gets a clean lap together and hops out of the elimination zone and up to P3. Vettel and Hamilton trading fastest laps with six minutes remaining.
16:07 Currently in the drop zone: Perez, Bottas, Vandoorne, Massa, Alonso. Bottas is having trouble negotiating traffic and getting the tyres up to temp.
16:06 Now Vettel gets the inters to work and goes nearly three tenths faster than Verstappen.
16:04 On full wets, Verstappen goes quickest with a 1:37.3.
16:03 Vandoorne goes for a spin at Parabolica and so does Massa a few moments later. It's tricky out there.
16:01 Q2 is underway but the threat of rain has returned. It prompts another mad dash out of the garages and some drivers, like Ricciardo and Verstappen, are on the full wets again.
16:55 As the chequered flag waves, Bottas goes quickest with Magnussen, Palmer, Ericsson, Wehrlein, Grosjean all eliminated.
16:52 The inters are not leading to quicker lap times.. and now a mad dash to reach Q2!
16:51 Raikkonen could be in a bit of trouble of unsafe release in the pits after narrowly missing a Force India.
16:48 Alonso and Vettel are among the first to switch intermediate tyres.
16:47 "We can go to inters quite soon," says Verstappen, with six minutes of Q1 remaining.
16:45 Verstappen gets to within three tenths of Hamilton to rise to P2.
16:43 The track is drier now than it was at the start of qualifying and, as such, the times from earlier are falling, falling, falling. Hamilton goes quickest again with a 1:36.9
16:41 Green lights! Is this real life?
16:36 A reminder that there is 13:31 left on the Q1 clock with Hamilton leading the standings. Grosjean will not take part for the rest of the afternoon as his wrecked car is under parc ferme conditions.
16:30 Still awake? We're restarting in 10 minutes! Hurrah!
16:15 Another 15 minutes before another update. The level of incompetency this afternoon has sadly come as no surprise. Race control too slow to react to anything.
16:11 Two hours into the delay, there are finally vehicles starting to attempt to dry out the track. Round of applause.
16:00 Sorry to sound robotic: further information in 15 minutes' time.
15:45 The rain has stopped and then promptly started again. We are having to wait another 15 minutes for more information. Talk now of having to delay qualifying until tomorrow morning.
15:30 Another 15 minute delay ladies and gents. The rain is still heavy and no signs of it letting up.
15:15 You guessed it...further information in 15 minutes.
15:13 Here we go again. Safety Car back out.
15:00 Now another 15 minute wait for more information. There is was an opportunity to at least finish Q1 around 35 minutes ago. Race Control have made a real mess of this.
14:55 The rain is getting heavier now. But the Safety Car is back out to give the impression that Race Control are doing something meaningful.
14:50 The rain has returned and some drivers have taken that as cue to hop out of their cars. Incredibly frustrating afternoon.
14:45 Really? Race control: 'Further information will be issued at 1500'. Sigh.
14:41 Guess what? The Safety Car is going for another run. Fingers crossed we get started again soon as the track does look a lot drier.
14:30 Aaaand another 15-minute delay. How wonderful.
14:29 The Safety Car is back out again for another exploratory lap. News to follow shortly...
14:15 Race control announce an update will now follow in 15 minutes' at 1430 local time.
14:13 The rain is easing again and track conditions look a little better compared to 10 minutes ago.
14:11 The Safety Car is going out to assess conditions again...
14:08 So with 13 minutes of Q1 remaining, it is Hamilton who is quickest at the moment with a 1:40.1., two seconds clear of Vettel in P2. Only seven times officially on the board at this stage.
14:06 "It was stupid to start qualy. Stupid," Grosjean says on team radio. He's not wrong.
14:04 Red flag! Just as times were going up on the board, Grosjean goes flying into barrier and is very lucky not to have had a very severe crash there. He hops out of the Haas and into the medical car.
14:02 Drivers reporting very poor visibility and there is an awful lot of standing water down at Turn 1, as Valtteri Bottas has just found out. He heads down the exit road at the last second.
14:00 Just as we're about to start, the rain is getting heavier. We have green lights...for now.
13:45 The rain is significantly lighter now compared to an hour ago. The expectation is that we will have nothing more than minor delay to qualy.
13:35 Updated penalty list: Alonso (35 place grid drop), Ricciardo (25), Verstappen (20), Hulkenberg (15), Palmer (10), Sainz (10).
13:32 The delay is a blessing in disguise as there are about a million penalties to go through. Over a third of the drivers on the grid have been forced to the back.
13:30 Hello and welcome back to a very wet Monza for (we hope) the qualifying session. The rain is easing, but it is doubtful we will start on time at 1400 local time.
12:01 So FP3 ends with a Williams 1-2, Massa ahead of Stroll and Hulkenberg is third. Join us again in two hours for qualifying, which is also expected to be a wet session. Cheers.
12:00 Seven drivers have posted times as Vettel pits instead of completing his lap. And that is the chequered flag.
11:58 A Williams 1-2! Felipe Massa does a 1:40.6 and Lance Stroll is 0.228s down.
11:56 Hulkenberg has gone quickest of all with a 1:41.491.
11:53 Hulkenberg starts a flying lap as both Williams drivers leave the pits.
11:52 Hamilton is told to remember that he may have to use this set of full wets in qualifying so "don't damage it."
11:51 Ericsson splits the Toro Rossos and Hamilton heads out in his W08, shod with full wets of course.
11:49 Other drivers are also staying out, such as Vandoorne and Ocon, but the later is having a difficult time through the corners. Sainz lowers the benchmark to a 1:41.5. Kvyat is three seconds slower than his team-mate.
11:48 A brave Sainz stays out and goes for a second lap, a timed lap, and that's a Toro Rosso in P1 with a 1:42.973. Bottas is told that it is "raining a little harder".
11:47 Oh, this isn't good, as it is raining harder now in the pit lane. Ricciardo pulls into the pits and parks it. Verstappen follows his team-mate in and here comes Vettel, Hulkenberg and Palmer> "Everyone reporting very slippery." Yip, it is.
11:46 Verstappen is told "radio check" and replies with "I"m not going to do radio check, it is really really slippery."
11:44 Green light, 16 minutes of FP3 remaining, and off we go...
11:42 Red Bull still have two minutes to wait for the green light.
11:40 Ricciardo is getting the jump on anyone else as he heads to the end of the pit lane followed by Max Verstappen. Both are on the full wets.
11:38 So we have a bit of movement in the garages as Daniil Kvyat puts his helmet on and climbs into his car. Jolyon Palmer is already in his car.
11:33 News is is that the session will start at 11:44.
11:29 The rain is easing up a bit, which is good news and the Safety Car is about to venture out again for a second inspection.
11:27 Whiting now reports that if qualifying doesn't go ahead this afternoon, it will be rescheduled for tomorrow morning.
11:23 Eric Boullier chatting to the media and he concedes the conditions are just too bad to send the drivers out.
11:17 Sergio Perez is having a laugh with the Force India team as they stay dry in the back of the garage.
11:14 The Safety Car is back out for another check but even going as slow as it is, it is struggling to get through the corners.
11:07 Charlie Whiting sums it up: "At the moment it is too bad, so we'll delay the start indefinitely." He has also revealed that the bump that some drivers were having issues with on Friday has been shaved down. There's also a new "low kerb about a metre" away from the track at Turn 11, which many drivers cut in FP1 and FP2.
11:04 Ricciardo hates to the bearer of bad news but here is it: "If it continues like this, it's unlikely (we'll go out). I fear similar scenario to Austin (2015). Hate to be bearer of bad news."
11:01 The official start time has come and gone as never mind puddles, we have rivers around the Monza circuit.
10:58 Vettel heads down to the pit wall to give the fans a wave, which is greeted with a cheer.
10:55 Start of FP3 has been delayed due to the weather conditions, reports the FIA.
10:49 It is bucketing with rain at the Monza circuit right now as the Safety Car and the Medical Car make their way around the circuit to check the conditions.
10:44 Speaking of Alonso, the Spaniard has come out saying he hasn't handed McLaren-Honda an ultimatum but Honda subsequently said that it is "very clear" that he doesn't want to stay with Honda power. Hours later McLaren were spotted chatting to Renault in their motorhome.
10:43 Asking yourself how McLaren got so high up on a power-hungry circuit? Well they used the tow. First Fernando Alonso towed Stoffel Vandoorne and then the Belgian driver gave his team-mate a helping hand.
10:36 Friday's practices belonged to Mercedes with Lewis Hamilton quickest in FP1 before Valtteri Bottas edged him by 0.05s in the afternoon's session. Ferrari, though, weren't too far off the pace at their home circuit with Sebastian Vettel third and 0.14s down. Kimi Raikkonen finished fourth ahead of the Red Bulls and McLarens.
10:30 Welcome back to Italy's temple of speed, Monza, for the third and final practice session of the weekend. All times are local.
15:30 The chequered flag is out on FP2 which ends with a P1 for Bottas, who was 0.05s up on Hamilton. Vettel in third is 0.140s down. Join us on Saturday for final practice. Cheers.
15:25 Kvyat is back in the pits and out of the car, having a look at the data.
15:23 And now Kvyat has an issue as he's told there is a problem with the car so needs to box.
15:22 No more running from Mercedes. They are happy with their day and calling it quits a few minutes early.
15:21 Raikkonen reports a "lot of difficulties" with the balance of his Ferrari. A good assessment given that he's just run very, very wide.
15:20 The VSC is lifted.
15:18 They've done so as far as a crane that is now lifted the Haas over the fencing.
15:17 Broken suspension is Magnussen's verdict as the VSC is out to allow the marshals to push his car to safety.
15:16 Magnussen is in trouble as he pulls over on the Ascari chicane and it looks as if the floor of his Haas is broken.
15:11 Hamilton has swapped over to the soft tyres as he continues his race preparation around the Monza circuit.
15:08 Hamilton is, literally, in the hot seat as he tells Mercedes his seat is getting very warm.
15:05 Renault have disclosed that it is a hydraulic problem that has put Hulkenberg out of practice.
15:01 Sainz has a seriously smoky Toro Rosso and pulls over off with plumes of smoke pouring out of his car. That's him done.
14:58 One by one the drivers have returned to the track, all on older tyres as race set-up work is now the order of the afternoon.
14:56 Bottas and Hamilton are both back on track but using used supersoft tyres.
14:50 Vanoorne takes P7 by 0.03s up on Ocon.
14:49 Riding the kerbs is part of Monza but Alonso literally just got thrown back onto the track by the kerbs. Ouch.
14:47 Ocon is up to best of the rest in the Force India but is 1.5s down on Bottas.
14:42 Raikkonen ups his pace but stays fourth behind Bottas, Hamilton and Vettel.
14:41 But here comes Hamilton, and there goes Hamilton across the line with a 1:21.462 - which is actually 0.056s slower than Bottas's best.
14:39 Mercedes back on top with a 1:21.406 for Bottas.
14:38 Stroll takes a look around the Ascari chicane... he can't really help it, he is facing is the wrong direction after a spin.
14:37 Vettel goes quickest, 8/10ths off his earlier best, with a 1:21.5. Raikkonen goes third. Hamilton is second on his soft tyres but he's not out on track on the supersofts.
14:36 Red tyres on the red cars with Bottas following them out.
14:33 Grosjean improved to 10th place while Magnussen went P13. Massa and Kvyat are now out as both weave around the track to warm up their tyres.
14:29 Verstappen is up to third but remains 0.453s down on Hamilton's soft tyre run.
14:28 346.4km/h is the fastest speed trap time so far and it belongs to Carlos Sainz in the Renault-powered Toro Rosso.
14:27 Verstappen, Grosjean and Magnussen break the silence as they head out on the supersoft tyres. These should be the fastest tyres.
14:24 Ricciardo is not having a great time trying to get in a clean lap as he reports "I lost the rear so I'll abort this lap" and pulls into the pits. The track is car-less.
14:22 Alonso, also on the supersofts, is up to 14th.
14:21 Ricciardo has put the supersoft Pirellis on his RB13 and he goes sixth quickest, slotting in behind Verstappen who did his time on the soft tyres.
14:18 New P1 and it is from Hamilton, a 1:22.103. Last man out as Ricciardo takes to the circuit.
14:17 Kvyat is not that there is no driveability issue, he responds saying then there is something not right with his grip into Turn 2.
14:15 Although the FIA are highlighting drivers who run off the track at Turn 11 and continue, they are not taking action - at least not yet as several drivers, including Verstappen, have already done so. Hamilton and Alonso take to the circuit.
14:14 "What the hell is going on with this driveability?" is Kvyat's rather annoyed question to Toro Rosso, and engine supplier Renault.
14:13 Verstappen gets involved, up to second, while Vettel has gone third. Hamilton and Ricciardo are still in the pits as too is Alonso.
14:12 Not a great opening gambit from Raikkonen or Bottas who were P12 and P14 after their first flier. Both up the pace with Raikkonen P1 with a 1:22.7 before he loses that to Bottas. A 1:22.4 for the Mercedes driver.
14:09 The session's benchmark is down to a 1:23.6 thanks to Perez.
14:08 Softs are the order of the afternoon so far as Raikkonen and Bottas leave their respective garages.
14:07 After an engine change between practices, Alonso could be running within the next 10 to 15 minutes. His team-mate Vandoorne has just been fired up.
14:05 A 1:24.6 from Grosjean starts the ball rolling on the timesheets.
14:02 Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg join the action in what could later be a wet session with forecasts of thunderstorms later today.
14:00 The light goes green and out the pits heads Romain Grosjean in the Haas.
13:55 Five minutes to the start of the 90-minute FP2 session...
13:49 After a few drops of rain during FP1 it is looking dry out there although there are clouds overhead. Air temperature is 25'C and the track is up to 33'C.
13:42 A rundown of FP1's top ten: 1 Lewis Hamilton Mercedes 1:21.537 – (SS) 2 Valtteri Bottas Mercedes 1:21.972 0.435 (SS) 3 Sebastian Vettel Ferrari 1:22.652 1.115 (SS) 4 Kimi Raikkonen Ferrari 1:22.689 1.152 (SS) 5 Daniel Ricciardo Red Bull 1:22.742 1.205 (SS) 6 Max Verstappen Red Bull 1:22.749 1.212 (SS) 7 Sergio Perez Force India 1:23.317 1.78 (SS) 8 Esteban Ocon Force India 1:23.400 1.863 (SS) 9 Stoffel Vandoorne McLaren 1:23.465 1.928 (SS) 10 Felipe Massa Williams 1:23.561 2.024 (SS)
13:34 Fernando Alonso has a 35-place penalty as he ran the Honda 'Spec 3.7' power unit fitted for FP1, but will revert to an older engine for the rest of the weekend in order to keep the new engine as fresh as possible for Singapore in a couple of weeks. The FIA also confirmed that both Red Bull drivers, Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen, are also set to receive grid drops this weekend along with Carlos Sainz. 20, 15 and 10 respectively.
13:30 We're back at Monza for the second of Friday's two practice sessions and news in is that several drivers are facing grid penalties for engine changes.
11:35 And there's the chequered flag, with Hamilton miles out in front at this very early stage. Join us again for FP2 at 1400 local time.
11:33 No big changes on the leaderboard with a minute of FP1 remaining. Runs on higher fuel loads have been on the agenda in the last quarter of this session.
11:26 Vettel is reporting a dry track again now and Ferrari are happy for him and Raikkonen to keep going. Verstappen is among the drivers heading back out, but both Mercedes drivers are done for this morning.
11:23 Tentative laps from the Ferrari duo, who are using the time mainly to get some practice starts in. They are the only cars out on track.
11:20 And Vettel is back out there too. Both Ferraris are one second slower than Hamilton's Merc at this early stage of the weekend.
11:18 The raindrops are not stopping Raikkonen, who headed out a few minutes ago on a fresh set of supersofts. Bit risky at this stage!
11:13 The rain has got heavier now and we officially have a wet track. Most drivers are ducking for cover with 18 minutes of the session remaining.
11:11 The track is getting slippy and birthday boy Carlos Sainz has just found that out after spinning out at Parabolica.
11:08 That is a little more like it from Raikkonen, closing to within 0.40 seconds of team-mate Vettel to take P4. Meanwhile, the McLaren-Hondas are practicing the tow in preparation of Alonso helping Vandoorne in qualifying this weekend. The roles were reversed in Spa.
11:07 The dark clouds are beginning to close in on Monza now and rain is expected in the next few minutes.
11:06 It's a low-key session for Raikkonen so far, staying firmly off the radar down in P8.
11:04 Ricciardo gets closer to his team-mate, rising to P5 with his latest effort. He still has three tenths to find on the Dutchman, though.
11:01 Verstappen only has one setting and that is attack, attack, attack mode. He is currently in P4 but won't be improving this time around as he gets a little too aggressive with the Ascari kerbs.
11:00 The pink panthers of Force India are continuing to show good pace. Best mates Perez and Ocon are currently P5 and P6 respectively.
10:56 Hamilton is getting into the groove with the supersofts, setting the fastest middle sector of the session so far before going on to post a 1:21.5. He is four tenths clear of Bottas in second over a second quicker than Vettel in P3.
10:48 And also confirmation that Verstappen has a new MGU-H fitted and a new ICE, resulting in a 15-place grid drop. A lot of damage for Red Bull already this weekend.
10:46 Hamilton is also out on the supersofts and is the first to dip into 1:21 by taking two tenths off Bottas' best. Meanwhile, there is confirmation from Red Bull that Ricciardo has taken on new engine parts - a new ICE, MGU-H and turbo-charger - adding up to a 20-place grid penalty.
10:40 It's still sunny at other areas of the track, so the drivers are not completely ducking for cover just yet. Bottas re-emerges with the supersofts strapped on, meaning he has gone through three tyre compounds already this morning.
10:35 And up come the umbrellas in the grandstands. Nothing more than a few spots at the moment.
10:32 There has been an issue keeping Jolyon Palmer in the garage until now. He heads out for his first timed laps on a track he claims is one of his best. We shall see...
10:30 Vettel is the latest to dive down the exit road on the entry to Turn 1. Rettifilo is catching out a few drivers this morning.
10:29 Bottas is closing in on the 1:21 bracket, extending his advantage to Hamilton to seven tenths.
10:26 An off-moment for Hamilton who backs out completely at Ascari and takes the scenic route instead.
10:23 Bottas ups the pace on the soft tyres with a 1:22.523, three tenths quicker than Hamilton. Not too much pace on show from anyone else just yet. Perez is currently third, 1.3 seconds behind and Vettel is a further five tenths back on supersofts.
10:20 Most of the field are flying through the laps with the threat of rain around. Hamilton is still currently leading the way with a 1:22.8, six tenths quicker than team-mate Bottas in second. The circuit record on this iteration of the Monza track is a 1.19.525 set by Juan Pablo Montoya in 2004.
10:15 Huuuge lock-up from Lance Stroll on the entry into the very tight Rettifilo and he weaves around the exit road.
10:13 Hamilton sets the early pace with a 1:23.9. Meanwhile, Honda have confirmed what we already knew: Alonso has a 35-place grid penalty after taking on an upgraded Spec 3.7 engine. He will switch back to an older engine for FP2, meaning his session may be cut short so the garage have time to complete the replacement.
10:05 Installation laps are done and dusted, with Alonso, Carlos Sainz and Pascal Wehrlein all trying out the Halo, which does not look any easier on the eye.
10:00 It's already looking a little murky and an orderly queue formed quickly with Ricciardo leading Bottas. Huge cheers for the two Ferraris as they leave the garage. We have green lights!
09:55 There is rain in the air today at Monza, which might mean we have more of faster pace than the usual laid-back, casual approach we are used to on a Friday. The chance of rain in this particular session is 60 per cent.
09:50 There will be a close eye kept on Force India duo Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon this weekend. Both are ready for a fresh start after two more collisions at the Belgian Grand Prix gave the bosses no option but to enforce team orders. Now play nice, boys!
09:40 A handful of drivers already look set to be on the back foot for Sunday's race with Fernando Alonso, plus Red Bull drivers Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen braced for grid penalties due to engine changes. That (hopefully) may be a thing of past one day with Ross Brawn confirming that the system, which unfairly punishes the driver, could be replaced with a fairer alternative.
09:35 A mere seven points separate Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton in the World Championship title fight following the latter's success at Spa last weekend. This is another track which is expected to suit Mercedes more than their arch-rivals, who arrive on home soil without the introduction of a new engine which has been postponed until later in the season.
09:30 Hello and welcome to the start of Round 13 on the F1 2017 calendar: the Italian Grand Prix at the legendary Monza circuit. FP1 gets underway in 30 minutes. All times are local.
