17:08 Pascal sets the first time of 1:36.999.
17:07 Manor reminds Wehrlein about the dust on the start/finish line.
17:06 Ferrari, though, using the mediums.
17:04 As expected, soft rubber looks like the preferred choice.
17:02 Hamilton goes straight out on the softs at the Sepang International Circuit.
17:00 Green light! Q1 is underway! Pascal Wehrlein leads this 18 minute session!
16:59 Lots of Ferrari flags around, and rightly so for the most prestigious team on the F1 grid.
16:58 Lewis Hamilton spotted in his Silver Arrow already. He looks amped!
16:55 Ladies and Gents, we're almost underway!
16:50 Last year, the top three qualifiers were: P1 Lewis Hamilton, P2 Sebastian Vettel and P3 Nico Rosberg
16:47 Fernando Alonso posted the slowest time of the day so far.
16:42 Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen finished 4th and 5th respectively, while Daniel Ricciardo occupied 6th place.
16:40 It is quite encouraging from youngster as yesterday during the second practice session he fell behind both Mercs and both Ferrari's.
16:35 Verstappen managed to split the two Mercs as Nico Rosberg posted the third fastest time of the day.
16:32 In case you missed FP3, here's what happened: Lewis Hamilton put in a mammoth 1:34.434 to go four-tenths clear of Max Verstappen in final practice for the Malaysian Grand Prix.
16:30 Welcome back to the Sepang International Circuit! Who is your tip to grab pole today?
15:01 That's it for this session. P1 for Hamilton, P2 for Verstappen and third for Rosberg. Will be interesting to see if the Bulls can challenge in qualifying. Tune in in two hours for Q1 for the Malaysian GP. Cheers.
15:00 The chequered flag is out and Hamilton ends P1 while Ocon has a late error that results in a small piece of bodywork taking flying lessons. He is P20 as he doesn't improve his time.
14:58 So it appears as if this session will end with Hamilton P1 ahead of Verstappen as Rosberg has exited the pits on used soft tyres.
14:56 Vettel improves his time but stays in fifth place. Sainz jumps up to ninth on his soft tyre run.
14:54 Raikkonen goes third, and Verstappen bumps him down as the Dutchman takes second place off Rosberg. He is 0.445s short of Hamilton's best.
14:53 Verstappen and Raikkonen are both on soft runs. Hulkenberg goes fifth and Bottas sixth.
14:52 Speaking of Ferrari, here comes Vettel on a soft tyre run but he is over four-tenths down in the middle sector. He goes P3, 08s down on Hamilton.
14:51 Perez improves from eighth to seventh, taking the position off Button. The McLaren driver is P8, Gutierrez P9 and Raikkonen P10.
14:49 Hamilton starts another flying lap. Faster in the first sector, but slower in the second, and he does a 1:34.6. Not faster than his best, but still better than his rivals. Massa goes sixth.
14:47 Rosberg has closed the gap but is still 0.619s slower than his team-mate.
14:46 Hamilton is up on Rosberg through the second sector and crosses the line with a 1:34.434 to go eight tenths up on Rosberg. 321.3kph through the speed trap.
14:43 Wehrlein is told to "box" as whatever was wrong with his Manor is still wrong.
14:42 Hamilton leaves the pits on a new set of soft tyres.
14:41 Palmer on the soft tyres goes 12th.
14:40 Rosberg just edges Ricciardo on the softs, a 1:35.293 for the German, which is 0.1 68s than the Aussie's best.
14:39 Wehrlein is out of his car, the floor is coming up and there is a lot of work going on.
14:38 A big lock up from Perez into the final corner leaves a swash of tyre smoke in his wake.
14:37 Dropzone: Nasr, Ericsson, Ocon, Wehrlein, Alonso and Sainz.
14:34 Verstappen reports that his car feels "very weird through Turns 1 and 2 with the engine, like it is braking too much."
14:33 Verstappen goes third on the mediums, 0.6s down, while Vettel lays down some rubber as he hits his pit box.
14:30 P1 for Hamilton, make that P1 for Ricciardo. He does a 1:35.461 on his soft tyres to beat Hamilton's medium run by 0.151s.
14:29 Ricciardo is back out and on the soft tyres.
14:27 Vettel meets a bollard as he spins, the Ferrari driver wins that battle as the bollard goes flying.
14:24 A 1:36.3 for Rosberg while Hamilton goes purple in the first two sectors and then backs right off.
14:23 "There is something wrong with the car, you find out because it is pointless driving the car right now," says Grosjean after yet another off.
14:20 P1 for Perez on the soft tyres, and P2 for Hamilton on the mediums. He is 0.039s down on the Force India driver.
14:19 A 1:3...nope Rosberg backs off as there is a spinner - looks to be a Haas - which brings out the yellow flags. It was Gutierrez who goes it wrong.
14:17 And with that Hamilton heads out on a new set of the medium tyres. Rosberg follows him out.
14:16 Still no on-track action from Mercedes but Hamilton is sitting in his W07.
14:15 Wehrlein is still struggling with power delivery as Bottas, in another Mercedes-powered car, slots into fifth place behind Ricciardo. Hulkenberg, Massa and Perez.
14:13 Hulkenberg crosses the line with a 1:36.6 to slide into second, 0.142s down on Ricciardo's best. Hulkenberg is on the softs to Ricciardo's medium.
14:12 There's a bit of extra work going on over at Red Bull on Verstappen's car with a bunch of mechanics surrounding the car. Max is standing at the back of the garage.
14:10 Ricciardo ups his pace to a 1:36.4.
14:09 Gloves on for Hamilton as he has a chat with his guys. He recently spoke of how the pre-season change of mechanics did have a psychological impact. Toto Wolff responded by saying there is no Team Hamilton or Team Rosberg.
14:08 Pascal Wehrlein, who was not happy on Friday, reports some "hesitation from the engine" as he gets into his practice programme.
14:06 Ricciardo lowers the P1 time to a 1:36.8 on the medium tyres.
14:05 Times on the board with a 1:40.2 for Magnussen and a 1:41.2 for Palmer. Expect those times to tumble dramatically as the session progresses.
14:04 Big slide from Alonso sends up a spray of sparks, which always makes for a great picture.
14:03 Good news for Kevin Magnussen as the Renault driver, who sat out FP1 after his RS16 caught fire, is already laying down the laps.
14:01 A practice start from Alonso at the end the pit lane means one of the Haas is the first to exit.
14:00 Green light, and FP3 is underway at the Sepang circuit...
13:55 Five minutes to the start and the air temperature is 33'C, track temp is 53'C.
13:51 The weekend's other big news is the change to the track, most notably to Turn 15. The final corner is now off-camber, the change made in the earlier resurfacing, and the drivers are not all that happy. "It's challenging. I guess that's one positive side of it," said Daniel Ricciardo. "You take the inside, but then it sort of washes it away with the negative banking and you're on the outside so you do a lot more distance. I wouldn't say it's a fun corner, you're really struggling for grip as the track falls away."
13:44 Over at McLaren-Honda, Fernando Alonso is back on his Singapore spec engine but is running the new Honda exhaust. So too is Jenson Button. Alonso's penalty tally for his weekend is now up to 45 thanks to Friday's engine change.
13:41 Ferrari and Red Bull will, however, be looking to get involved. Sebastian Vettel was third quickest on Friday, finishing ahead of Kimi Raikkonen, Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez. If you haven't heard it yet, Perez is now being linked to a move to Haas as he looks to align himself with Ferrari for a 2018 drive.
13:35 Friday's honours were shared among the Mercedes drivers with Nico Rosberg fastest in FP1 and Lewis Hamilton taking over in FP2. The team-mates, who are separated by eight points in the German's favour, are expected to be the pace-setters in this afternoon's qualifying.
13:30 Welcome back to the Sepang circuit for the third and final practice session. All times are local and this practice session is only 60 minutes.
15:32 Join us again tomorrow for FP3! Cheers!
15:30 Chequered flag! Hamilton tops the session!
15:28 Just under two minutes left as teams begin to scramble for lap times!
15:24 Hamilton seems frustrated: "I need a gap, I've got no power to get by."
15:21 Plenty of tyre complaints throughout the day, teams will be looking to correct that come FP3 and qualy...
15:20 Mercedes practicing a five-second pitsop penalty if they get penalised! Interesting! "You have a five-second penalty that we'll do at the pitstop,"
15:18 Rosberg does a time in the 1:40's on the mediums...
15:17 Button and Magnussen having a little squabble there! The Brit wasn't too polite on the team radio...
15:15 Just three cars in the pits now as drivers trying to make the most of the closing session.
15:12 Button goes from 20th to 10th! Almost like he was cruising throughout the morning session.
15:08 Mercedes tells Rosberg: "Just be aware, left rear temperature still on the limit."
15:06 The current top ten now: Hamilton; 2 Rosberg; 3 Vettel; 4 Raikkonen; 5 Verstappen; 6 Perez; 7 Alonso; 8 Ricciardo; 9 Hulkenberg; 10 Sainz.
15:04 Alonso back on track now with the mediums.
15:02 Force India looking quick on this track, both Hulkenberg and Perez both lapping fast times.
15:00 Just about 30 minutes left in this session!
14:56 Perez seen locking up there...
14:53 Update on the lap times so far: 1.Hamilton 2. Rosberg 3. Vettel 4. Verstappen 5. Perez 6. Alonso. 7. Ricciardo. 8. Hulkenberg.
14:51 Woah! Magnussen goes off track and onto the grass, he goes through the pitlane and back onto the track again.
14:50 Teams doing long stints now with their cars..
14:44 Magnussen heading down to the pitlane! Great work from the French manufacturers to get his car ready.
14:38 Yup, Hamilton breaks the 1:34' barrier and goes fastest.
14:37 Hamilton flying with the soft tyre, lets what lap time he clocks in...
14:35 Hamilton in the pits now, while Rosberg sets the new fastest time on the soft tyre.
14:31 Great news for Renault! Kevin Magnussen looks set to enter the track again after his car caught alight during FP1.
14:30 Vettel goes fastest on the soft compound! With a 1:35.605.
14:27 Hamilton also on hards now. Interesting, could we see them make an appearance during the race on Sunday? They seem to be doing quick laps.
14:25 Sainz gives his thoughts on the circuit so far: "We have definitely overcooked the oversteeer, lots of oversteer. The track has changed a lot, I would like to make a change. There is much more oversteer than I expected, the tyre and the track [are the cause]."
14:22 Hammer time! Hamilton goes fastest with a 1:36.144.
14:21 The grip on the track looks shoddy! Track temperature is playing a big part already...
14:17 Toto Wolff seen smiling, and rightly so with the form Mercedes have enjoyed in 2016.
14:15 Ricciardo out on the track now on mediums, should be an interesting afternoon for Red Bull.
14:12 Vettel goes ahead of Alonso! But Rosberg pips both of them with a 1:36.543.
14:11 Vettel on the track, expect Alonso's time to move down to second fastest.
14:09 Ocon and Palmer now out and about on the Sepang International Circuit. Palmer is trying out the hard compound.
14:07 Alonso tops it with a time of 1:38.158!
14:05 Boom, Gutierrez sets the first time of 1:38.475.
14:04 Just a reminder, Alonso got hit with a 30-place grid penalty for changing his engine.
14:02 Grosjean and Alonso follow him....
14:00 Green light! Gutierrez pips the grid and goes out first!
13:58 There are some clouds lurking, rain is quite common during this Grand Prix weekend...
13:55 We're underway soon! Hopefully the only burning we see is that of the tyres....
13:50 Red Bull were behind Ferrari during the first session, could that be the order of Sunday's race? Could very much be so.
13:46 Manor driver Pascal Wehrlein doesn't seem to be happy after FP1: "Something cannot be right,"
13:44 Ferrari duo Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel were third and fourth fastest respectively.
13:40 Kevin Magnussen stole the show though during F1, albeit for the wrong reasons as he his caught alight, the session was red flagged for about 15 minutes.
13:35 Rosberg posted a time of 1:35.227, 0.494s quicker than team-mate Lewis Hamilton.
13:33 After an incident filled FP1, this is what occurred - Nico Rosberg fired the opening salvo for the Malaysian Grand Prix as he went quickest in FP1, a session that was red flagged when Kevin Magnussens RS16 caught fire.
13:30 Welcome back F1 fans! We're underway in 30 minutes for the second free practice of the Malaysian Grand Prix.
11:31 That's it for now, join us in two hours for the build up to FP2. Cheers.
11:30 The chequered flag falls on FP1 which concludes with a P1 for Rosberg, 0.494s up on Hamilton. Raikkonen is third for Ferrari.
11:27 Ferrari's Jock Clear takes a walk all the way down to the end of the pit lane, stares at something, and walks all the way back up to the Ferrari garage.
11:25 20 of the 22 drivers are putting in the laps with only Magnussen and Bottas, whose car is up on jacks, in the pits.
11:21 Nasr out on new softs reports: "There's too much understeer in the car in the high speed."
11:19 It looks as if Ricciardo, Verstappen, Hulkenberg and Perez, all of whom are inside the top ten, won't be using the soft tyres this session.
11:15 Track temperature is up to 48'C.
11:14 Rosberg gets it a bit wrong through Turn 11 as the back end of his W07 steps out on him.
11:12 Interesting to watch the various lines through the final corner. It is now off camber after a slight change during the resurfacing. Some, such as Rosberg, are going in deep, others such as Raikkonen are sticking to the middle line.
11:09 In the dropzone, so to speak if this was Q1, are Ericsson, Felipe Massa, Felipe Nasr, Palmer, Esteban Ocon and Pascal Wehrlein. And Magnussen as he has not been out since his fire.
11:04 Rosberg heads back out on a used set of mediums as he practices a start on his way out of the pits.
11:03 Perez adds his name to the list of those testing the track limits as he gets it wrong through Turns 7 and 8.
11:01 Vettel is topping the top speed times with a 325.1, Hamilton is second with a 324.9kph.
10:59 Red Bull team boss Christian Horner reckons today's quick times are more down to the resurfacing of this track than to the cars.
10:55 Raikkonen's opening lap on the mediums is a 1:36.6, which is three tenths down on his soft tyre lap.
10:54 Alonso has improved to fifth place on the soft Pirellis.
10:51 Raikkonen leaves the Ferrari garage on the medium tyres while Verstappen has swapped his mediums for hards.
10:48 A 1:35.8 for Rosberg on the mediums, that is sixth tenths down on his soft tyre run, and a 1:35.8 for Hamilton.
10:46 Hamilton is back out, now running the mediums. Rosberg joins his team-mate on the mediums.
10:44 Sainz is out on the soft tyres in his Toro Rosso. He was P15 and improves to 12th.
10:43 Ricciardo moves up sixth place with the Force Indias of Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg next in line. Button, in his 300 GP, is P9 ahead of Alonso.
10:42 Verstappen in fifth, who is 1.7s off the pace, set his time on the medium tyres.
10:41 Track temperature is up to 43'C as both Ferraris head back into the pits. Raikkonen is third, 1.088s down, Vettel is fourth, 1.104s off the pace. They, like the Mercedes drivers, have been running the soft tyres.
10:39 Another hot lap from Rosberg sees him lower the benchmark to a 1:35.227 to pull half a second clear of Hamilton.
10:37 Palmer is the next driver struggling to keep it on the track as he runs wide and mounts the kerbs.
10:36 Hamilton is back in the pits with a huge flat-spot after locking up before taking to the Astroturf.
10:35 Vettel continues on despite reporting: "I've got so much vibration I can barely see."
10:32 Sainz gets it rather wrong on the exit of Turn 10 and takes a trip over the gravel trap before working his way onto the somewhat less destructive grass.
10:31 A 1:35.7 for Rosberg is the new benchmark time while Hamilton is 0.005s slower. Raikkonen and Vettel are third and fourth.
10:27 A crazy dash to get out there including Hamilton.
10:26 FP1 is back underway.
10:23 Rosberg and Ricciardo are patiently waiting in their cars as the clew up operation looks to be over.
10:21 Cleaning crew on hand to sweep up some of that left over foam from the pit lane.
10:18 The car is now being pushed back inside the garage so expect the red flag to be lifted shortly.
10:17 Magnussen's car is being drained of the fuel and his once yellow Renault is now white due to the fire extinguisher foam.
10:13 Renault are trying to get the fuel out of Magnussen's car as that is what seems to be leaking and igniting. But given the location of the car, just in front of Renault's garage, the red flag is the right decision as others have to pass the stricken RS16 to get out of the pits.
10:11 Red flag!
10:10 More flames as it appears as there is liquid leaking from the engine cover that keeps igniting.
10:09 That is a rather white Renault as the mechanics had a bit of a time trying to get the flames out. And another shot from the fire extinguisher. This is happening in the pit lane.
10:06 Fire in the pit lane and a big jump from Kevin Magnussen as he leaps out of his Renault. As Magnussen was about to be pushed back in the garage, fire leapt from the top of the engine cover.
10:05 Birthday boy Verstappen, who is running aero sensors on both sides of his car, is putting in a second lap.
10:04 And out goes championship leader Rosberg followed by Daniel Ricciardo. Just Hamilton then.
10:02 Jenson Button puts in a lap with aero sensors fitted to his McLaren-Honda. His team-mate Fernando Alonso is running Honda's updated engine this session.
10:00 Green light as Esteban Gutierrez is the first driver out in the Haas.
09:55 Air temperature is 29'C and the track is 37'C as we are five minutes away from FP1.
09:49 A big happy birthday to Max Verstappen, who is celebrating his 19th birthday.
09:43 But while Mercedes may be the in-form team, it is Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel who is the defending Malaysian GP champion. He won last year by eight seconds ahead of Hamilton with Rosberg third at the line. Vettel insists there is "always" a chance that Ferrari can win it again come Sunday.
09:39 But while that championship looks as if it will go down to the wire, the Constructors' could be sealed this weekend. Mercedes are 222 points ahead of Red Bull Racing and don't even need to score this weekend to wrap it up. they just need Red Bull to not score more than seven points.
09:36 The championship battle and state of play over at Mercedes are dominating the headlines in the build up to this weekend's grand prix after Nico Rosberg stormed into the lead with his third win since the summer break in Singapore. He now leads Lewis Hamilton by eight points.
09:30 Welcome to the Sepang circuit, home of the Malaysian Grand Prix. All times are local.
