14:40 With the Mercedes drivers not posting a time during FP3, Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel posted the fastest lap time with a 1:57.351 on a wet track.
14:38 The rain is staying away from now after a very wet FP3. It came down hard in the morning, stopped about halfway through final practice, and the track is now dry. It isn't expected to stay that way as more rain is forecast for later.
14:36 The irony, though, is that with rain around the Shanghai circuit today's qualifying could yield the mixed up grid that Bernie Ecclestone and co had hoped to achieve through the much-criticised elimination format.
14:30 Welcome back to the Shanghai circuit for the qualifying for the Chinese Grand Prix. Formula 1 has reverted to the 2015 format of three segments with drivers dropping out after each. So six drivers will fall by the wayside after this session.
13:02 Join us in two hours for a wet qualifying. Cheers!
13:01 So Vettel finishes quickest of all ahead of Bottas and Perez, however, only 14 drivers set times.

12:35 Nasr reports a "strange" sound from his Sauber's engine while Ericsson's C35 is in pieces as Sauber work on a hydraulic problem. Ericsson will not be out this session.
12:34 We have a Renault in the pits with a puncture, it is Palmer and it is a right rear puncture. Moments later Magnussen had a major off-track moment, taking to the gravel and escape path.
12:32 A 2:02.4 for Massa puts him 1.6s down and a 2:01.2 for Bottas.
12:30 And we have a time, a 2:00.812 for Raikkonen.
12:29 Vettel, Ericsson, Verstappen and Sainz are now the only drivers who have not put in a lap this session.
12:26 Nope, it is two laps and back into the pits for Kvyat. Well at least we have the Mercedes pairing out on track now. Rosberg practices a start on his way out and Hamilton does the same.
12:23 Kvyat has gone onto a second lap, the first driver to do so today.
12:22 So far we've just had drivers head out for one lap then head back in but will this new group up the ante. Grosjean has a moment, spinning at Turn 10.
12:20 It is a sentiment echoed by Ferrari who report "no more heavy rain expected for the rest of FP3."
12:19 Alonso follows Button out and he is told the "radar looks clear for the moment" so no more new rain coming down, at least for now.
12:17 Bottas pits after just one lap and Palmer now joins Massa on the track. Magnussen and Button join the fray.
12:16 Massa has joined his team-mate out on track while Ricciardo is glued to the TV watching Bottas' lap to get an idea of the conditions. There is a lot of standing water out there.
12:14 Out goes Bottas, the first driver to brave the conditions. He heads to the end of pitlane to practice a start and out he goes on the full wet tyres.
12:13 And that is the sound of engines being fired up! Conditions have improved slightly in the pitlane, cars are being fired up and drivers are climbing it. Hopefully we'll have a few laps shortly.
12:09 We have moment at Williams as Massa climbs into his car. Yip, that is a highlight right about now that's how quiet it is.
12:07 Alonso is in his McLaren but it is definitely no going anywhere soon. Wheels are off, monitor is on and he's just chilling in the car.
12:06 In case you were not aware of the rain, duh, there is a lovely marshal holding up a sign saying "wet race." Yip, we kind of got that one ourselves!
12:02 At this moment it does not look as if anyone plans to head out in the next few minutes. There is a lot of standing water in the pitlane so the drivers will all be waiting for someone else to take the first voyage out.
12:00 The track is green and FP3 is underway.
11:55 Five minutes to the start and the rain is still falling.
11:48 Ironic that on the weekend we return to the old 2015 qualifying format we may yet have the mixed grid that the elimination style system was expected to deliver.
11:44 The rain is expected to come down throughout the day so, while in the past we've had quiet wet sessions, this one is likely to see a lot of action as the drivers have to adjust to the conditions ahead of qualifying.
11:37 As Manor have put it: "Filthy weather here in Shanghai this morning. The track will be pretty wet for the start of FP3."
11:34 Friday's running belonged to Ferrari with Kimi Raikkonen quickest ahead of Sebastian Vettel while the two Mercedes of Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton were next in line. It was a great start to the weekend for the Scuderia but it could all change today as the rain has arrived.
11:30 Welcome back to the Shanghai circuit for Saturday's third and final practice hour.
15:33 Lots to talk about today, hopefully we get some more entertainment tomorrow, Cheers!

15:20 Ericsson's session looks to be done following his gearbox problem.
15:19 Hamilton gathering on mediums with 14 laps being done on this stint.

15:10 On the used supersofts, Grosjean sets a time in the 1:45s.

14:30 Both Magnussen and Gutierrez have no had incidents at every race weekend so far this season. Unfortunate.
14:27 The Shanghai International Circuit looks very tricky as a lot of drivers are slipping and sliding all over the place. Interesting.
14:25 Different from the first session, All the drivers have now set a lap time in FP2 except Magnussen.
14:23 It has also been mentioned that they are expecting a wet track during tomorrow's action.
14:21 Bottas struggling for traction on the mediums.
14:20 Hamilton also slides off Turn 1 but recovers gracefully like it didn't even happen.
14:17 Raikkonen running on used soft tyres and sets a time of 1:41.429.
14:16 Renault driver Jolyon Palmer slides of the corner while his teammate Magnussen watches from the technical box as his car continues to be investigated by the team.
14:15 Rosberg is out now on the track and sets fastest time 1:37.761 while Hamilton is burning medium tyres on the circuit.
14:11 The brakes on the Haas car look red hot!
14:10 Gutierrez told to brake less hard on the corners as smoke comes out of his rear tyres.
14:09 Jenson Button, who is on his second engine of the season, is out on the track now with soft compound tyres.
14:08 Manor driver Wehrlein clocks 329km/h on the speed trap!
14:07 Wehrlein, Raikkonen and Ericsson all out on the track now as well.
14:06 Grosjean sets a time of 1:40.908 on softs.
14:05 Grosjean's teammate Esteban Gutierrez also out on the track hoping to put in his first lap time.
14:02 Green light! FP2 underway in Shanghai as Romain Grosjean takes the lead going out first.
14:00 Drivers getting into their cars before the session gets underway. Calm atmosphere in Shanghai.
13:50 Teams will be looking gain some valuable data ahead of tomorrow's qualifiers, which has been reverted to the 2015 format.
13:30 Magnussen, Massa and Gutierrez have all yet to set lap times going in the second practice session.
13:10 Behind Rosberg in P1 is second fastest Lewis Hamilton and third fastest Sebastian Vettel.
13:05 Recap of the action in FP1: Nico Rosberg put in a late dash on the soft tyres to claim the P1 at the Shanghai circuit on Friday in a session that was blighted by tyre failures for Felipe Massa and Kevin Magnussen.
13:00 Welcome back to the Shanghai International Circuit! Second practice to get underway in 30 minutes.
11:32 That's it for now. Join us in two hours for the start of FP2 coverage. Cheers.
11:31 Hamilton finishes P2 ahead of Vettel, Ricciardo, Raikkonen and Kvyat.
11:30 The chequered flag is out and Rosberg holds the session's P1 with a 1:38.037. He reports a problem with his W07 and is limping home. Mercedes, though, don't sound too worried.
11:29 Here comes Grosjean, arguably one of the most impressive drivers this season with his back-to-back points. He does a 1:41.3.
11:27 Ricciardo sets his time on used tyres and is just a second off the pace, which earns him an encouraging nod from team boss Christian Horner.
11:26 Raikkonen does a 1:39.1 and Vettel crosses the line with a 1:38.6. That is 0.628s slower than Rosberg's best.
11:25 It is a 1:38.1 for Hamilton but that is pipped by Rosberg's 1:38.037.
11:23 A frantic dash as one by one most of the drivers head out and the majority have opted for the soft tyres so expect lap times to fall.
11:22 We are back underway in China with just eight minutes remaining in FP1.
11:14 The truck is still venturing out the circuit with a massive broom attached to the rear to sweep up any debris that may be out there.
11:10 The track inspection is continuing. This is a huge safety issue so the FIA are taking their time over it.
11:06 Button is told that this is likely a problem for Williams and no one else. His pitwall reckons Massa's failures were down to tyre rub while Magnussen got caught out in the debris.
11:05 The FIA's Jo Bauer is over at the Williams garage getting an explanation on what is going on.
11:02 Bad news over at Haas, as Gutierrez will not be seen this session due to an "electrical issue with the car." He is definitely getting the bulk of Haas' bad luck this season.
10:59 The marshals are again out there with their brooms, clearing the debris from Magnussen's tyre failure.
10:56 And now Magnussen is sans a rear left tyre. He limps back into the pits but that's going to be a damaged car as well. His Renault is scrapping along the ground and there is debris all over the main straight. Red flag.
10:54 And we have another deflated left rear for Massa. Yes, another! "I have the same problem, the same problem," he informs Williams.
10:53 Massa is back out on track - and hoping for a better outcome this time around.
10:52 Haryanto and Palmer are the only two drivers out on track as the rest of the pack waits for them to clean the track of the earlier dust.
10:48 Haryanto jumps up from P18 to P13 using a new set of the medium tyres. A good improvement for the Manor rookie.
10:48 Haryanto jumps up from P18 to P13 using a new set of the medium tyres. A good improvement for the Manor rookie.
10:46 We are still waiting for four drivers; Magnussen, Massa, Palmer and Gutierrez, have yet to set times. Not sure if we will see Massa again this session.
10:44 Williams report that "Investigations with Pirelli Sport show no sign of a puncture so the team will investigate the cause of the blow out." There are some reports that it may have been a tyre rub as some claim to have seen smoke prior to the failure.
10:40 The track falls silent as all 22 drivers are back in the pits..
10:39 Oh we have another spin for Hamilton who reports he keeps locking up into Turn 11.
10:38 Don't be too in awe of McLaren's P4 and P7. Button and Alonso are on the super-softs whereas their rivals are running softs or even mediums.
10:37 Times coming through thick and fast now with Vettel up to third, Hulkenberg going P5 and Bottas P8.
10:36 Alonso makes his mark with a 1:40.5. That has put him P4, nope, P5 as Button is six-tenths quicker.
10:34 Raikkonen comes to complete a hot lap and it is a 1:40.9 for the Ferrari driver, putting him down in fourth place.
10:31 The track has been green-lighted again and Rosberg is immediately out in his W07. He is pipped to the line by Hamilton, Raikkonen and Sainz.
10:29 The clean-up continues as Massa is in the garage, giving Rob Smedley a rather animated breakdown of what happened.
10:25 Red flag! Aside from that piece of debris there is gravel on the track that needs to be swept away.
10:24 Yellow flags are out and so is the Virtual Safety Car as there is a piece of debris in the middle of the track that the marshals need to retrieve.
10:23 Ricciardo makes his mark, going P3 behind the Mercedes. He is 1.8s down on Hamilton's best.
10:22 Back to the timesheets, Hamilton is leading ahead of Rosberg, who is back out on track. Ericsson is third ahead of Haryanto and Wehlein.
10:20 The Williams mechanics are out in the pitlane waiting for their driver. And here he comes. Slowly making his way into the pits.
10:18 Williams report "a spin on track with a blown left rear tyre." A rather scary moment as the tyre just went.
10:17 A big moment for Massa, who has been left with a rear left puncture. "I think something's broken on the car," the Williams driver reports.
10:13 Ericsson, Haryanto and Massa have all taken to the track to begin their morning's work.
10:11 Hamilton has a spin after his hot lap which was followed by a return to the pits.
10:10 Over at Williams the team is reporting that they fitted the new front wing to Bottas car for his second installation lap. "All ok, feels good" is his feedback.
10:07 Straight into the action for Rosberg and Hamilton with the latter going quickest on a 1:38.802.
10:06 McLaren have a quick chat with Alonso regarding his seat fittings. If he is still feeling any pain from his fractured ribs, being strapped into a F1 car taking G-forces will not be at all comfortable.
10:04 New engines this weekend for Sebastian Vettel, who didn't make the start grid in Bahrain, and Jenson Button, who suffered a failure on lap 7 of the Sakhir race.
10:02 Only Alonso, Perez, Palmer and Button have yet to venture out. Take Alonso off that list as there he goes in his MP4-31.
10:01 One by one the drivers head out for their installation laps.
10:00 The pit lane light goes green and we are underway in Shanghai.
09:55 Five minutes to the start of FP1.
09:53 Air temp is 20'C and the track is already up to 33'C. No wind to speak off and no rain either, at least for today - tomorrow could be a different story.
09:49 All eyes are on Nico Rosberg this weekend. The German has won the opening two races of the championship to take a 17-point lead over Hamilton in the title race. Can Rosberg's run continue? Stay tuned to find out!
09:42 The other big news in the build-up to this weekend is that Lewis Hamilton is facing a grid penalty. Mercedes were forced to change his gearbox, which was damaged in Bahrain, with the team saying that Shanghai is the "best" venue to take the hit as overtaking is possible.
09:37 The good news this weekend is that Fernando Alonso is back in the MP4-31, well he is for FP1. The McLaren driver passed the FIA medical checks on Thursday but was told he faces more in the wake of first practice before he is cleared for the rest of the weekend.
09:30 Welcome to the Shanghai International circuit, home of the Chinese Grand Prix, This is round three of the 2016 F1 World Championship and all times are local.
