17:00 Thankfully no rain as of yet, but the sky is slightly overcast.
16:55 Five minutes to go, let's see how the drivers adapt to the new qualifying format...
16:50 As the new qualifying format looks set to cause some drama, you can expect a lot of drivers looking to get their fastest lap out the way at the beginning of the of each interval.
16:45 However, the Ferrari's are not too far behind...
16:45 After being fastest in all three practice sessions, Lewis Hamilton looks set to claim the first pole position of 2016.
16:40 Rio Haryanto has suffered a three-place penalty and 2 penalty points after smashing into Romain Grosjean in the pit lanes.
16:35 Just heads up about the new qualifying format. Drivers will now be eliminated at set intervals. Q1 - 16 minutes, 7 drivers eliminated, Q2 - 15 minutes, 7 drivers eliminated, Q3 - 14 minutes.
16:30 Welcome back! The first qualifying round of 2016 is underway in 30 minutes at the Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit.
15:02 That is it for FP3, please join us in two hours for F1's new qualifying format. Cheers.
15:00 The chequered flag is out on final practice and Lewis Hamilton finishes quickest of all with a 1:25.624. Nico Rosberg was second ahead of Sebastian Vettel.
14:59 Sainz is up to fourth, 0.633s off the pace, and Verstappen goes sixth. Great day for Toro Rosso so far.
14:57 A late charge from Alonso has moved him up to P10 while Button has slotted into 12th place.
14:54 Bottas jumps to P5 on the supers and Maas goes eighth.
14:52 Here comes Hamilton now and it is a 1:25.624, which is 0.176s quicker than Rosberg and 0.228s up on Vettel's best.
14:51 Rosberg is out on the super-softs so this should be interesting to see what he does. He's up through the first sector but down in the second. He posts a 1:25.8, 0.052s quicker than Vettel.
14:48 A second flying lap on the supers for Raikoknen is a 1:27.2 whereas his previous time was a 1:26.4.
14:47 Verstappen improves to seventh place, slotting in behind his team-mate Sainz. The Toro Rosso drivers are running 2015 Ferrari engines this season having parted ways with Renault.
14:46 Now it is Vettel's turn and it is a pace-setting 1:25.852 for the German. That is, however, only 0.297s up on Rosberg's best and given that the Ferrari driver went a second quicker than his soft tyre time, one can only assume that Mercedes still have a second in the bag.
14:43 Super-soft run for Raikkonen pushes him up to second place, 0.286s down on Rosberg.
14:42 Nasr has another moment, this time running it wide at Turn 1 and mowing the grass in the process.
14:40 With 20 minutes to go it is Rosberg, Hamilton, Ricciardo, Vettel, Raikkonen, Kvyat, Maasa, Alonso, Button and Palmer. And it is soft, soft, super, soft, soft, super, super, super, super and super as the tyre choice for those laps.
14:39 Hamilton does a 1:26.477, 0.3s down on Rosberg's best.
14:37 Hamilton follows his team-mate's game plan as he's now out on a brand new set of soft tyres.
14:35 Rosberg is flying on a brand new set of soft tyres and he's quickest in the first and second sectors and in the third. It is a 1:26.149 for the Mercedes driver.
14:34 Grosjean jumps up to sixth place on the super-softs on his first flying lap of FP3.
14:30 Great news as Grosjean heads out of the Haas pits and this time there is no Manor around to trip him up. The team reportedly changed the floor of his VF-16 as a precaution.
14:28 Ricciardo is back out on a brand new set of super-softs and it is 1:26.7 for the Red Bull driver, just 0.143s faster than Vettel's second flying lap on the softs.
14:25 New softs for Raikkonen and Vettel sees the Finn goes quickest with a 1:27.5 while Vettel probably would have taken it had it not been for a traffic in the form of a Williams running worn tyres.
14:23 Rosberg has a close encounter with a Renault, looks to be Magnussen, as both overshoot the mark and Rosberg has a major lock up while narrowly avoiding the rear of the Renault. Escape road time.
14:20 12 laps on the super-softs for Hamilton and he has a bit of a lock up. You can see the wear on his right rear tyre so don't expect those tyres to go much further.
14:18 While repairs continue over at Haas, Haryanto is out on track and onto his eighth lap of the day. He is P20, 4.5s down.
14:16 Haas have pointed the figure at Haryanto for the earlier collision. The team tweeted: "To start #FP3, @RHaryantoracing exited his garage straight into @RGrosjean, who was already on pit lane."
14:15 Ricciardo has edged ahead of Kvyat on the timesheets, -.4s up on his team-mate while Vettel is P3, 2.7s down. Different tyres, different programmes with the Bulls on the super-softs and Vettel running the softs.
14:14 A jump up the order for Pascal Wehrlein in the Manor as he goes P8, 3.2s behind Kvyat.
14:12 Perez is the latest to spin, heading down the escape road at the penultimate corner.
14:09 A bit of a lock up from Alonso through the Turn 15 left-hander and he follows that up with a spin on the exit of the penultimate corner.
14:07 Hamilton goes P7 on his first flying lap. He is using the super-softs. Now Kvyat is quickest with a 1:28.510. It's like a slot machine out there with the times constantly changing.
14:05 Perez and Hulkenberg holding the 1-2, make that Hulkenberg and Perez as the German edges his Force India team-mate by 0.175s.
14:03 A 1:35.8 for Palmer as the day's first hot lap but that is bettered by Magnussen with a 1:32.9.
14:02 No messing around this morning as we already have all but four drivers - and the two crashers - out on track. Raikkonen, Jolyon Palmer, Felipe Massa and Kevin Magnussen have all started flying laps.
14:01 Oh drama in the pits as Rio Haryanto's Manor is stuck under Romain Grosjean's Haas. They are next to one another in the pit lane and as Grosjean exited his garage so too did Haryanto. Bad timing, big oops.
14:00 The light goes green and FP3 is underway at the Albert Park circuit with the Ferraris of Sebastian Vettel and Raikkonen the first drivers out.
13:59 Ricciardo is getting strapped in, HANS attached and belts tightened while a rather focused looking Button is all set. So to is Esteban Gutierrez, who is back in F1 with Haas after spending 2015 as Ferrari's test driver.
13:58 Both Mercedes drivers are already strapped in and ready to roll.
13:55 Five minutes to the start of the hour-long FP3.
13:49 Expect even more laps today as the teams make up for lost track time from Friday. It is overcast and a bit chilly but it is dry out there and that's what counts.
13:46 Nico Hulkenberg was P2 on Friday ahead of Kimi Raikkonen, Daniel Ricciardo, Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso. It was a good start to the season for McLaren with both Alonso and Jenson Button covering more than 20 laps each - marked improvement on 2015!
13:41 But while Lewis was flying, his team-mate Nico Rosberg was crashing. He smacked the wall nose first damaging his Mercedes, which needed a few front wing and repairs to the front left of the car. Rosberg admitted it was a driver error and will be back in action today.
13:36 On Friday Lewis Hamilton claimed the 1-2 and while some rivals may want to put that down to the limited running, his P1 time - or at least the manner in which he went about claiming it - must have them feeling rather wary. Hamilton came out of the pits and on his very first flying banged down a 1:38.841 to put him half a second up on the chasing pack.
13:30 Welcome back to Melbourne for the Australian GP's third and final practice session. It promises to be a very busy session as the teams make up for yesterday's limited running in the rain. All times are local.
18:02 That's it for Friday's action, not much, but at least some laps were done. Join us tomorrow for practice session 3!
18:00 Sainz still out on the track and improved his time but still remain in 5th.
18:00 The chequered flag is waved as Hamilton finishes the day with back-to-back first positions.
17:59 Hamilton going back out on the track for one last lap of the day.
17:58 Vettel looks done for the day, getting out of his racing gear.
17:55 Bottas not looking to quick out on the track. Seems like both Williams will be called in soon.
17:54 However, Sainz doesn't beat his best lap of the day.
17:53 Sainz putting in some effort now, pushing his car hard.
17:52 Sauber still yet to set a lap time during P2.
17:51 Haas continue to be conservative going into the race weekend, only racking up 13 laps as the session comes to a close.
17:50 A lot drivers look to be getting some grass on their tyres, no need for a garden service here during P2.
17:48 Alonso and Wehrlein not fazed by the rain, still out there navigating their way around the rain drops.
17:47 Gutierrez goes off track, looks to be at a complete standstill in the gravel.
17:46 Slippery track affects Perez's lap time, blotching it in the final sector.
17:45 Rain making a sneaky appearance once again in Australia.
17:44 Perez looks to be burning some fuel here in Melbourne. Going really fast through the sectors.
17:43 Kvyat gets into the pit. Looks in no rush.
17:41 Hulkenberg goes second with a time of 1:39.3.
17:40 No team has dared to try out a different set of tyres, all still running inters.
17:40 Hamilton goes quickest in his first full lap of P2! 1:38.8.
17:38 Rosberg looks done for the day, gets out of his Mercedes attire and into more comfortable clothes.
17:37 Hamilton's car seems to be riding low, sparks flying from underneath.
17:35 Hamilton out to play now with the rest of the grid.
17:33 Grosjean out on the street circuit now, while his teammate Palmer goes off.
17:32 Hamilton gearing up to put in a last stint of the day for the Mercedes, most likely.
17:31 Despite the track being a little drier than before, some drivers have still not made their way out on the track for a spin.
17:29 Jolyon Palmer out on the track with the bright yellow Renault, really standing out in Melbourne.
17:27 Positions so far with 30 minutes left: 1; Raikkonen; 2 Ricciardo; 3 Sainz; 4 Alonso; 5 Button; 6; Vettel; 7; Perez; 8; Hulkenberg; 9; Wehrlein; 10; Kvyat; 11 Haryanto; 12; Rosberg.
17:26 Button moves up to 5th fastest with a time in the 1:40's.
17:25 Ricciardo makes his way to the pit lane after racking up 8 laps so far.
17:25 Raikkonen remains fastest on the track, but only by a hairline.
17:22 Manor Racing so far put in the most laps of the day, 22 in total.
17:21 So far every team seem to be burning the inters, understandable with a wet track.
17:20 Raikkonen as cool as ever trying to get used to the Melbourne track and sets the fastest time of the day so far with 1:39.4
17:19 Vettel out on the track and sets his first lap time of the day with a 1:43.7.
17:18 Sainz pips Perez to 2nd fastest with a time in the 1:40's.
17:17 Alonso peels away from the track and pulls into the pits after setting the fastest time - 1:39.8.
17:16 Haryanto and Kvyat make their way back to the pits. Will we see them out on the track later?
17:15 Kimi Raikkonen gets out there on the street circuit.
17:12 Youngster Pascal Wehrlein completes his first lap in P2 with a time of 1:46.6.
17:12 Nico Hulkenberg joins the pack on circuit.
17:10 Rio Haryanto the slowest so far with a 1:57.2.
17:09 Alonso goes fastest with a1:41.6, for now.
17:07 Verstappen expresses his disappointment at the wet track.
17:06 Virtual Safety Car ends, Fernando Alonso making an appearance out on the track.
17:06 Rosberg slammed into the barrier on turn 8, teams taking note for future reference on the street track.
17:05 Virtual Safety Car out on the track. Clearing the debris gets underway.
17:02 Mercedes tells Rosberg to pull over rather than make his way back to the pits, seems as if he was doing more damage dragging it back to his team.
17:02 Front wing hanging out Rosberg's Mercedes, slowly making his way back to the pits.
17.02 Rosberg slams into the barrier!
17:01 Kvyat goes fastest now in P2 with a time in the 1:44's
17:00 1:47.36 time for Rosberg, goes fastest during P2.
16:55 Rosberg joins the Red Bull duo out on the track. Trying to get an early head start on Hamilton?
16:55 Red Bull making the most of the time, Kvyat joins Ricciardo in burning some rubber in Melbourne.
16:55 1:49.17 lap time for Ricciardo. Not the most exciting lap but a lap none the less.
16:51 Ricciardo putting in a solo run on the track, no-one else seems as eager as him.
16:50 The Australian burning the inters in his first lap.
16:48 Ricciardo leads the way on the track! He's out of the pits first.
16:48 Kvyat has been sitting in his car all kitted up for quite some time, expect to see him out on the track soon.
16:47 Suns out! Some blue sky sneaking through the dark clouds. Hopefully the track will dry out soon.
16:45 Felipe Massa seems to be in a jovial mood, sporting a smile and showing a thumbs up.
16:42 Sergio Perez wandering around the pits looking like he needs something to do.
16:42 Marcus Ericson showing off his helmet, with a drawn picture of a rainy cloud and a thumbs down.
16:40 Jolyon Palmer mentions that they will be a low risk approach for the rest of today as there is no reason for Renault to risk their car.
16:38 Doesn't seem like Jenson Button will getting out there anytime soon as he is in conversation with his team.
16:35 Nico Rosberg and Ricciardo look to be gearing up to get out on the track.
16:35 Teams waiting for the rain to die down. They seem anxious to get out there to learn about their cars in Australia.
16:30 And were underway at the Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit! Despite the track being dried during the break the rain has started to come down again.
16:25 Sebastian Vettel and Carlos Sainz will also be hoping to set a time in this session as they opted to sit out while the track was wet.
16:10 Not much much information was gathered in practice session one due to the rain, so hopefully there will be some dry weather going into the second session.
16:05 Lewis Hamilton goes into the second practice leading the pack in P1 - with Red Bull duo Daniel Kvyat and Daniel Ricciardo trailing behind in second and third respectively.
16:00 Welcome back to the Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit! Second practice to get underway in 30 minutes.
11:47 Australian GP 2016
14:02 That is it from us for FP1. Join us in two hours for the day's second practice session. Cheers.
14:01 Not the best end to the session for Ricciardo but it happens.
14:00 The chequered flag is waved as more rain falls at the Albert Park circuit and Lewis Hamilton claims the first P1 of 2016 ahead of Kyvat and Ricciardo. The latter in fact finishes his session in the gravel trap having lost control of his RB12 in the slippery conditions.
13:58 His team-mate Raikkonen is still playing in the rain and locks up into Turn 13 resulting in a trip up the escape road.
13:57 Vettel is out for his first flying lap of FP1 and Vettel is back in the pits without a time to his name.
13:56 Gutierrez takes a trip over the grass, not the first driver off the circuit in this session.
13:54 A bit of a twitch from Kyvat but he goes P1 only to be pipped by Hamilton with a 1;29.725.
13:53 Button has improved to sixth place, 2.7s down on Hamilton's best.
13:52 Hamilton, Kvyat, Button, Alonso and Rosberg are back out, all still on the soft tyres despite the few drops of the rain that fell.
13:50 10 minutes remaining and all the drivers barring Vettel and Sainz, the latter has car troubles, have set lap times.
13:48 Haryanto is off in the gravel but manages to keep his Manor running and works his way back out. An off for Bottas as well.
13:47 And we have a few drops of rain coming down again!
13:46 Hamilton has hit the front with a 1:30.364 ahead of Ricciardo while Hulkenberg has dropped to third.
13:44 It looks as if we are going to get a lot of action in these final 15 minutes as most of the drivers are already out on track and racking up the laps.
13:42 Hulkenberg, now sporting a helmet that looks far too much like team-mate Perez's, jumps to the front of the timesheets with a 1;31.681.
13:40 Verstappen is out on the soft tyres and Verstappen is spinning on the soft tyres. The Toro Rosso driver lost it between Turns 6 and 7.
13:38 New Williams reserve driver Paul di Resta is in the pits having a chat with former driver and GPDA chairman Alex Wurz.
13:37 The Frenchman pulls into the pits after his sixth place and leaves an empty track behind.
13:34 Grosjean continues to lay down the laps for Haas and has his tally up to six.
13:30 Now Grosjean makes his mark with a 1:43.443 and Gutierrez ups his pace to a 1:41.780. Nasr is putting his helmet on as he gets ready to head out in the Sauber.
13:29 Gutierrez completes his lap, a 1:45.711.
13:28 It is great to see Haas in action even if Gutierrez is well down on pace. He reports issues with power deliver, saying it is inconsistent around the lap.
13:25 The blue skies are back as Button pits and Alonso heads out. Grosjean and Gutierrez join the McLaren driver out on track.
13:21 Verstappen has upped his pace to a 1:40.075 despite a bit of slide through Turn 11 and two wheels off the track.
13:20 With 40 minutes to go we have 10 times on the board with 12 drivers yet to make their mark.
13:17 Button comes to complete his first flying lap on the inters and it is a 1:43.508, which puts him P7. Verstappen has jumped up to fourth place with a 1:40.2
13:14 Silence has descended over the Albert Park circuit in the wake of that brief shower but that is shattered as Button returns to the action in his '22' McLaren.
13:10 Magnussen whips into the pits while Palmer ups his pace to a 1:45.7 before following his team-mate in.
13:07 Palmer and his team-mate Magnussen are the only drivers out on track at the moment, both lapping on the inters.
13:06 Palmer is out in his bright yellow Renault but has to work his way around traffic so even though he is on the inters his first time is a 1:53.
13:05 There are now several drivers out on track but there is also rain making for slippery conditions and slow laps for those out on the slicks.
13:02 The Aussie upped his pace to a 1:32.394 while Kvyat has slotted into second place. He is 1.7s down.
13:01 Slick tyres to the fore with Ricciardo going quickest on a 1:34.007.
12:58 Good news over at Toro Rosso as Carlos Sainz heads out for his very first lap of the session. Ricciardo is also back out on track. It is a very slow lap for Sainz, who pulls over to let Ricciardo by.
12:54 As Vettel joins the action there is a notable dry line in some parts while the spray has been reduced significantly throughout the track. Vettel, though, pits after just one lap.
12:52 Raikkonen has jumped to the top of the timesheets with a 1:40.754.
12:49 The sun is out and the track is drying and we have Kyvat, Raikkonen and Rosberg out on track.
12:47 Ricciardo comes up to complete a lap time and it is, no it is not as the Aussie, who was shooting some serious sparks from his RB12, heads back into the pits instead.
12:44 Haryanto heads out for his first lap as a Formula 1 driver. Ricciardo is also back out there as he starts Red Bull's programme for the day at his home circuit.
12:41 Hamilton follows Rosberg in staying out for a second lap and he clocks a 1:40.812. And that ladies and gents is the first Mercedes 1-2 of the season. Granted they are also the only two drivers to have set times.
12:38 Rookie driver Pascal Wehrlein is out in his Manor as is Hamilton in his Mercedes. Only the two Haas drivers, Sainz and newbie Rio Haryanto still to run. And as I say that Grosjean exits the pits for Haas' first lap at a grand prix weekend.
12:37 There is an issue for Sergio Perez. He tried to leave the pits but only got as far as the exit before his mechanics had to come running to push him back.
12:35 We have a 1:44.037 as the weekend's first lap time courtesy of Rosberg.
12:34 Rosberg is staying out for a second lap on the inters while Alonso, Magnussen, Button, Palmer and Nasr are out on the full wets.
12:32 Raikkonen, Verstappen, Hulkenberg, Rosberg, Bottas and Kvyat all head out. The Ferraris opted for the full wets but the rest have gone on the green inters.
12:30 The pit lane light goes green and FP1 is underway with Vettel the first driver out on track.
12:25 Five minutes to the start of the 2016 F1 season!
12:23 Good news is that the track is beginning to dry out, bad news is a bit more rain is forecast for later.
12:19 However the question many are wanting answered is where exactly are McLaren. They had a solid - but not spectacular - pre-season and show the potential to finish races but where they will finish is anyone's guess. Same for Haas. A good debut test for the newcomers but will points be possible this weekend? Team boss Guenther Steiner says perhaps if all the stars align.
12:16 So it appears as if Ferrari and Mercedes are the teams to beat with each saying that honour goes to the others while behind them the battle is heating up. Red Bull, Williams and Force India are all in the running for 'best of the rest' but only time will tell if the pre-season translates on a grand prix weekend.
12:13 Onto the action - at least the expected action. Ferrari led the charge during F1's pre-season with Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen claiming 5 P1s over the eight days, they also finished the Barcelona test with the overall 1-2. Their best times, though, were set on the new Pirelli ultra-soft tyres. In sharp contrast Mercedes never once trialed the new rubber but instead focused on long runs on the medium tyres. As such rivals reckon Mercedes are sandbagging, which we should have an idea of later today.
12:08 The new three tyre compounds, though, may not come into play in today's opening session as it is rather wet out there. After a bit of sunshine and a drying track the rain is back with changing conditions forecast for the rest of this session.
12:03 A few new rules to note this season: qualifying has changed to an elimination format; there are now three tyre compounds in play; separate exhaust pipes mean the cars are louder and the FIA has clamped down on radio communications. All this, the powers-that-be hope, will make for a more exciting 2016 season.
12:00 Hello and welcome to everyone from Melbourne, home of the season-opening Australian Grand Prix. After months of silence Formula 1 is back with a roar - and it is even slightly louder than last year's. All times are local.
