He had failures in both sessions with the second resulting in Carlos Sainz's running also being curtailed for safety reasons. The team is hoping to have found a solution overnight.
13:39 Mercedes may not have it all their own way this weekend as both Red Bull drivers were within half a second in FP1 while Sebastian Vettel was just 0.269s short in FP2. Max Verstappen finished that session just over half a second off the pace.

13:40 All 22 cars are back in the pits as they return their first set of tyres to Pirelli.
13:37 Alonso pits with seven laps to his name but he has yet to set a time.
13:36 Hamilton is back in the pits with 11 laps on the ultras on the board.
13:35 Ultras for Perez but also a lot of traffic. He goes P6, 2.2s off the pace.
13:34 We have a spin for Hamilton at the same place as King. That will make the development driver feel a bit better about his mistake.
13:33 Kvyat is back in the Toro Rosso garage. Now he's just waiting for his car to join him.
13:31 Verstappen cuts the gap to Hamilton to 1.035s as he continues to lap on the soft tyres. Ricciardo is fourth ahead of Raikkonen and Vettel.
13:30 Button and Alonso are both out on soft tyres with the Brit about to set his first lap time of the day. It is a 1:47.3 which puts him P15. Still waiting for Alonso to post a time.
13:27 Spin for King.
13:26 Change at the top as Hamilton clocks a 1:43.0. Verstappen goes third. And Gutierrez is quite literally sliding his way out of Haas.
13:25 Verstappen is out on a set of the soft tyres and begins a flying lap.
13:24 Back to the timesheet, Rosberg is P1 with a 1:43.2, Hamilton is P2, 0.890s down, and Vettel is P3. The Ferrari driver, on the soft tyres, is two seconds off the pace.
13:22 The tyre is causing too many problems for Kvyat, who pulls off the track to park his STR11 down at Turn 8.
13:20 Kvyat reports a "puncture" as he slowly tours his way back to the pits.It is the rear left that is down and the tyre is starting to rip itself apart.
13:17 Grosjean, Wehrlein, Gutierrez and King head out on the supersofts as we have a mix of tyres out there.
13:15 A 1:44.1 for Hamilton as Kvyat, Palmer and Vettel join the action on the soft tyres.
13:14 A 1:43.8 for Rosberg despite running a touch wide through the final corner.
13:12 Rosberg and Hamilton are both out on the ultrasoft tyres with Pirelli have also brought the soft and supersofts to Abu Dhabi.
13:10 Rosberg heads out in his W07, will it be a championship-winning W07 or will that belong to the car on the other side of the garage? And Hamilton joins him.
13:07 As Max Verstappen heads out that means we are only waiting on the title rivals to make an appearance today.
13:05 Sergio Perez and Manor development driver Jordan King leave the pits.
13:03 Halo news as Vettel returns to the pits with the cockpit protection device on his car.
13:02 Massa, Alfonso Celis Jr, who is testing for Force India, Daniel Ricciardo and Carlos Sainz are the next out with Marcus Ericsson also joining the action for an installation lap.
13:01 Daniil Kvyat and Jolyon Palmer immediately head out, both safe in the knowledge that they will remain with their respective teams next season. Sebastian Vettel, Kevin Magnussen, Felipe Nasr, Valtteri Bottas, Button, Romain Grosjean, Pascal Wehrlein, Kimi Raikkonen, Esteban Gutierrez and Fernando Alonso follow them out.
13:00 The track is green lighted and FP1 for the season finale is underway at the 21-corner Yas Marina circuit.
12:55 90 minutes of day light running coming up but the sun will set during FP2 as this is a twilight race weekend.
12:51 Air temperature is 29'C and the track is up to 37'C. No rain forecast for today.
12:46 This weekend's grand prix marks a fond farewell to Jenson Button, who basically said his sabbatical is actually a retirement, and Felipe Massa. Both stalwarts are hanging up their F1 helmets and will be replaced by rookies next season in Stoffel Vandoorne and Lance Stroll.
12:39 As such for Hamilton to retain the World title he needs to get others involved. As Christian Horner put it, even if he romps off into the distance and wins the grand prix by a mile, if Rosberg is P2 the title goes to the other side of the garage. He reckons Hamilton should back up Rosberg into the clutches of the Red Bull drivers. Hamilton feels that would not be very practical, wise or easy.
12:34 Rosberg heads into the weekend leading Hamilton by 12 points in the standings. That means a podium finish for the German come Sunday's 55-lap Abu Dhabi Grand Prix guarantees him a first World title. As for Hamilton, he has to finish on the podium to even stand a chance and after that it will depend on where Rosberg is.
12:30 Welcome to the Yas Marina circuit for the 2016 title showdown in Abu Dhabi. Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton are both racing for the title but only one will be grinning from ear-to-ear come Sunday evening.
