Montreal: Lewis puts Merc back on top

MONTREAL, Canada - Lewis Hamilton signalled his intention to reclaim the Formula 1 Drivers' championship lead from Mercedes team mate Nico Rosberg by setting the pace in second practice for the 2014 Canadian GP on Friday.

The Briton, a three-times winner on Gilles Villeneuve circuit, lapped the island track in 1min16.118on an overcast afternoon on the St. Lawrence River.

Ferrari's two-times Drivers' champion Fernando Alonshad upstaged the mighty Mercedes team by topping the time sheet in the first session but Hamilton and Rosberg quickly restored order by going 1-2 later in the day.

Hamilton and Rosberg arrived in Canada downplaying their spat that had dominated talk up and down the paddock but on the track their rivalry remained firmly in place.

Rosberg, who ended Hamilton's four-race run of wins by coming first in Monaco two weeks earlier to oust his team mate from the top of the standings, was 0.175sec behind, setting the stage for another hotly contested one-on-one battle for pole on Saturday.

Mercedes has started every race from pole so far in 2014 and taken five successive 1-2 finishes.

Rosberg has 122 points to Hamilton's 118 and the Mercedes team has a hefty 240 points in the Constructors' points. Red Bull is second on 99 but continued to show improvement as quadruple Drivers' champion Sebastian Vettel, winner in Montreal in 2013, posted the day's third-best time.

Ferrari is also struggling to match Mercedes' pace but its driver Kimi Raikkonen clocked the-fourth best effort followed by Alonso.

Williams drivers Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas were sixth and seventh.
