FIRST LOOK: Next-gen F1 cars

LONDON, England - Formula 1 fans on Thursday (July 23 2015) saw the first planned visual changes to the cars for 2017.

After the sport acknowledged the need for change, Germany's Auto Motor und Sport has now published exclusive images - penned by renowned F1 technical journalist Giorgio Piola - of the dimensions of the 2017 cars.

F1 wants its racers to look more assertive and be five to six seconds faster per lap.

LOWER, WIDER WING

Writing on Thursday, Auto Motor und Sport's respected correspondent Michael Schmidt said the 2017 cars are wider, with wider and bigger rear tyres and a lower and wider rear wing.

Other technical changes, he said, will "increase downforce significantly" but also increase the predominance of overtaking, while the minimum weight could be dropped by 50kg.

MORE NOISE REVS

F1 will bring return refuelling in 2017 as part of a rules revamp that will also make the cars faster, louder and more aggressive looking.

The governing International Automobile Federation said in May 2015 that the aim was to make cars quicker by five to six seconds a lap.

This will be achieved through aerodynamic rules changes, wider tyres and lightening the cars. The V6 turbo hybrid ‘power units’ introduced in 2014 to replace the howling V8’s will continue to be used – but noisier and revving faster.
