MILAN, Italy - Former Formula 1 driver Eddie Irvine has been sentenced to six months' jail here for brawling in a night club.

The judge found the Northern Irishman and Gabriele Moratti, son of a former Milan mayor, guilty of causing "mutual injury" during the incident in the VIP section of Milan's  Hollywood night club in 2008.

Each had accused the other of being the aggressor and of using a glass in the brawl.

Each was sentenced to six months but the sentences can be appealed. Even if they were confirmed they would probably be suspended so neither man is likely to end up actually in prison, their lawyers said.

They disagreed, however, on whether the fight had occurred because the former racing driver made contact with a former girlfriend of Moratti.

Irvine, now 48, drove for Jordan, Ferrari and Jaguar before retiring from the sport in 2003.

Moratti, 35, is a company director well known in Italy for being fined 49 000 euros (about R560 000) for illegally converting a warehouse to a luxury home inspired by comic hero Batman and dubbed "The Bathouse" by news media.
