2013 Monaco GP: Practice 1

MONTE CARLO, Monaco - Nico Rosberg gave Mercedes a quick start to its Monaco GP challenge by setting the fastest lap during first practice.

Rosberg lapped the famous waterfront circuit in 1min16.195. The Mercedes driver is chasing his third successive pole position of 2013.

Ferrari's Fernando Alonso was second-fastest, 0.087sec slower.

PRESSURE ON FOR ALONSO

Alonso, winner of the 2013 Spanish GP, is hoping to become Ferrari's first Monaco winner since 2001 and the first F1 driver to win the race for three different teams.

Romain Grosjean was third-fastest for Lotus as he limbered up for his closest thing to a home race in the continuing absence of a French GP.

Rosberg's team mate Lewis Hamilton was fifth-quickest, followed by Ferrari's Felipe Massa.

Hamilton was 0.274 slower than Rosberg around the historic circuit that threads its way up to Casino Square and past the yacht basin.

Pastor Maldonado provided the incident-free session's main surprise, planting his Williams in sixth place after 90 minutes on one of the most unforgiving circuits in F1.

WILLIAMS IN POOR FORM

Williams have not scored a point yet in 2013, comprising of a total of six races in a row including the 2012 finale. The team is in danger of chalking up its worst start to a F1 championship.

Maldonado has form in Monaco, however, winning junior series races there on his way to F1 and loving the challenge of keeping out of the barriers.

Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel, who has a four-point lead in the standings over Lotus's Kimi Raikkonen, was only 10th-quickest;h team mate Mark Webber, 2012 Monaco GP winner, was seventh.

The McLarens of Jenson Button and Sergio Perez were eighth and ninth respectively ahead of what could be another difficult weekend for a team struggling to catch up in 2013.
