Porsche's 911 range too big?

Imagine if Aston Martin built 20 Vantage derivatives, or if Audi marketed 20 different R8s. It would be pure madness. Porsche seems to be getting away with it.

How does one define brand dilution? Easy, just sketch out the current Porsche 911 line-up.

It has grown to 20 with the announcement of the new Speedster.

The world’s seminal performance car remains an arresting drive, with peerless engineering integrity, yet Porsche's marketing department seems to have won a major office bet with the engineering guys.

What else could possibly explain the current 911’s 20-derivative range?

Whereas most performance car nameplates have two-door coupe, convertible and lightweight derivatives, Porsche amazingly offers 20 different strains of 911.

Zuffenhausen counter-argument is that the 911’s extreme brand-latitude is made possible by its redoubtable engineering fundamentals.

How 911 residuals will behave in the long-term if the company persists with a model-cycle apparently calculated in months instead of years remins to be seen.

Peculiarly, as oversubscribed as the 911 range would appear to be, it's nearly impossible to pin-point a single one of the 20 which petrolheads could do without...
