French rider killed in Isle of Man qualifying

DOUGLAS, Isle of Man - A French rider has been killed in a crash during qualifying for the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy motorcycle road-racing time trials on the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea.

Organisers of races say Franck Petricola was killed during a Superbike qualifying session on Wednesday (June 3).

Gary Thompson, clerk of the course, said in a statement on Thursday (June 4) "the road racing community has lost a remarkable man".

An investigation into the crash is under way.

Petricola, who suffered life-threatening injuries in a race in Ireland in 2014, was making his debut in the TT races that are held on more than 60km of public roads around the island.

The BBC reported that there have been 141 deaths at the races since they began in 1907.
