Presented every three years by Italy's association of designers and manufacturers, the award celebrates the quality of Italian design.
The 1199 Panigale has become part of the Compasso d'Oro Collection, recognised by the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage for its “exceptional artistic and historical interest”.
The 2014 event is the 23rd iteration of the ceremony presented more than 270 products and the judging panel explained the Ducati won the award for having "transferred competition level performance into an elegant mass-production motorcycle".
PANIGALE IS A BENCHMARK
Through its 60-year history, almost 300 projects have received the prize and these, in addition to more than 2000 others selected for “honourable mentions”, form the Historical Collection of the ADI Compasso d'Oro awards.
The collection is described by the Lombardy Regional Department of the Ministry for Cultural Heritage as being "of exceptional artistic and historical interest” and the associated award claims to be the world's longest-established and most influential design accolade.
The 1199 Panigale now becomes a benchmark reference within its industry and a statement from the competition organisers said: "Already regarded as an Italian icon of design, the 1199 Panigale presents incredible engineering solutions with design specifically intended to raise the performance bar as high as possible.
"The technical features fully integrate the 145kW Superquadro engine with a monocoque frame to achieve an optimum power-to-weight ratio and enhance the motorcycle's speed, acute agility and overall riding experience."
