5 tips for biking in SA winter

Andy Reid, managing director of Vespa SA, said: "Once a two-wheel rider, always a two-wheel rider. The winter chill might make the ride seem daunting but the correct gear and accessories will go a long way towards keeping you warm and comfortable in any weather.

FIVE TIPS FOR RIDING IN WINTER

1    What to do?
Find the right riding gear and hop on your two-wheeler anyway.

2    Gear up
A waterproof jacket and pants are all you need to keep the rain from dictating your mode of transport. Warm, fleece-lined clothing will also make sure you keep the chill out. Vespa riders can stay warm and dry with a custom-designed leg-warmer made of hi-tech waterproof polyamide, with fleece lining.

3    Warm hands
Your hands need to be able to act on feedback from your brain for optimal handling. Gloves that are tough, warm and supple are essential for riding in winter. You can also try out heated handlebar grips to keep your fingers toasty and reactive.

4    Trusted safety
The most important aspect of riding in adverse conditions is making sure you are safe and comfortable - and make sure your tyres and brakes are in top condition.

5    See and be seen
A powerful headlight is vital for dull, overcast or misty days, . Ensure that yours is in top working condition and that it provides excellent visibility in all conditions. Keep your headlight on at all times to ensure other drivers can see you. Also ensure your riding gear is brightly coloured and reflective.
