The 2005 Golf GTI takes most of its styling and design cues of the GTI concept car which was shown at the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show. The new GTI will be available in three and five-door guise.
It will go on sale in South Africa in the first quarter of 2005 but at this stage we will only get the five-door version according to VWSA spokesperson Songezo Zibi.
Under the bonnet of VW's hottest new hatch is a 2-litre FSI turbo engine with a power output of 147kW.
This hot hatch accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.2 seconds and its top speed is 235 km/h.
It features a striking grille with a honeycomb mesh and other sporty touches include three large air inlets in the front bumper.
In contrast to the "normal" Golf, the rear end makes its mark characteristically as a GTI with a striking roof spoiler and chrome twin tail pipes. The GTI will also feature 18-inch wheels.
