4x4 Australia editor, Dean Mellor, said judges tested the vehicles for five criteria - value, innovation, toughness, design brief and ability both as an off-road vehicle and as a tourer.
The Land Cruiser V8 100 Series was a clear leader in three of the categories and second only to its turbo-diesel variant in another. The judges praised it for "good value", "one of the quietest and smoothest V8s around", "dollops of low speed torque, plenty of ground clearance and good wheel travel."
