Audi has just launched the latest offering in its A3 range, a sedan, in South Africa but the family hasn’t stopped growing. We have more info on the next movel, an S3 sedan.
The S3 sedan is ready to order now at an equivalent (pre-SA taxes) price of R568 000 in the UK with first deliveries ready in March 2014. Audi SA says the S3 sedan and A3 cabriolet will arrive here mid-2014.
S SERIES QUARTET
The three-box version of the 223kW S3 joins the S3 and S3 Sportback, the latter to arrive locally in January 2014 as the final model, the S3 Cabriolet, waits in the wings.
Under the S3 sedan bonnet will be a new two-litre TFSI turbo unit with direct injection pushing out 223kW/380Nm. The rest of the figures are a claimed 6.9 litres/100km, a 0-100km/h sprint in 4.9 seconds and a governed top speed of 250km/h. CO2 emissions are 159g/km.
The automaker says opportunities to savour 223kW in a compact quattro all-wheel-driven Audi will soon be four-fold as the new S3 sedan joins the line-up with the new two-litre TFSI engine weighing 148kg – 5kg less than the previous unit.
Audi says this weight reduction comes from the modular transverse platform which underpins the A3 and S3, the front axle shifted forward by 52mm compared to the previous model.
CUSTOM SETTINGS
Audi drive select is also standard and allows the driver to change the characteristics of the throttle pedal response, the steering, the shift points of the optional S tronic transmission and the configuration of the magnetic ride system at the touch of a button. A choice of comfort, auto, dynamic, efficiency or individual modes is available and, in the latter, drivers can create a custom profile within limits.
The S3 sedan has an S-specific single-frame grille and front bumper, aluminium exterior mirrors, pronounced door sills and a fresh rear bumper incorporating a platinum grey diffuser and cut-outs for the four chromed tailpipes.
The standard xenon plus headlights with their diode daytime running lights can be upgraded to swivel through curves and corners or replaced by diode headlights.
COMFORT TREATS
There’s more legroom thanks to the 35mm -onger wheelbase while the boot volume is 390 litres with the seats up – 50 more than the Sportback.
Comfort treats include grey instrument dials with white needles. The rev counter includes a boost-pressure indicator and between the dials there's a driver’s information system.
There’s also a a flat-bottomed, leather, multifunction sports steering-wheel with an S3 logo and aluminium-look paddles, pedals and footrest, along with heatable leather sports seats.
