The North West High Court in Mahikeng ordered the SA Police Service (SAPS) to pay R1.05 million in damages to a man after finding his arrest and detention were unlawful.
Jongile Dan July was arrested on a charge of armed robbery and kept in custody for 202 days, between 11 July 2015 and 28 January 2016.
July appeared in court shortly after his arrest, and was denied bail.
