Cape Town - CCTV footage has captured the moments of a man firing back at armed men that appear to be hijackers.

The video shows three armed men, with balaclavas over their faces, pulling up to the bakkie owner in a 2010 Ford Figo.

The owner of the Nissan bakkie had parked his vehicle and had just gotten out. As he was walking away from the vehicle towards the gate where he was parked outside, the Figo approached and the driver took cover after being shot at by one of the men. The driver ran to the front of his Navara and stared returning fire.

Upon realising that the driver had been armed as well, the hijackers fled, leaving one of their members behind to fend for himself while leaving the rear passenger door open.

In attempt to run away, the hijacker stumbles but regains his footing and out sprints the getaway car and his team members in the process right down the road.

Despite the video being posted in November 2017 by Aimee McGill, it's still imperative that drivers are observant of their surroundings, especially when approaching your home or any destination.

WATCH: Here's how you can avoid a hijacking situation

Vital road safety tips: list by DialDirect

 • Use a GPS to avoid getting lost and becoming an easy target
 • Inform someone at your destination about your estimated time of arrival
 • Always be aware of your surroundings and look out for anything suspicious
 • Limit distractions when walking to or from your car, as well as when driving
 • Avoid driving with windows wide open, keep the doors locked and valuables out of sight
 • If you suspect you are being followed, make a couple of false turns. If someone is still following you, drive to the nearest police station
 • Leave enough room between you and the car in front of you to avoid being boxed in
 • Slow down in such a way that the traffic light is green by the time you reach it
 • Always park in a safe, well-lit area
 • If you are hijacked: Remain calm; do not argue, do not make sudden gestures; avoid eye contact but try to remember what the carjacker looks like; comply with the hijackers directions (within reason); try to get away from the area as quickly as possible; don’t be a hero – your life is worth more than your car.
