Young Lupini makes SA race history

History was made at Killarney’s opening Cape Regional Kart racing round on Saturday when young Giordano Lupini (10) became the first fourth-generation racing driver in South Africa when he took to the track in the Maxterino class.

Giordano’s great-grandfather Gigi won his class in the 1929 Mille Miglia before coming to SA where he ran the well-known Scuderia Lupini in the 1950's and early 60's. Grandfather Mario was a leading saloon racer in the 1960's and father Michele more recently carved himself a reputation in Production Cars.

Giordano, who goes to school at Bridge House in Franschhoek, acquitted himself well and finished all three heats, earning a Novice of the Day along the way.

Giordano found himself among several other kids of racing parentage in the races won by SA Kart Racing Academy find Nicholas Thompson from Kohen Bam, who happens to be Koos Swanepoel’s grandson.

Also on the grid was Julia Hoal, grand-daughter of  1950's racer Edgar, and Jonathan Abderdein, Chris’ son, made his debut in the Junior Max class.
