"The best investment we can make is in our own wine."- David Trafford.
Since his 2014 vintage, David Trafford of De Trafford winery (high-up against the Helderberg, the highest vineyard on the mountain when he started making wine here in 1992, famously 393m above sea level) has been keeping back pallets of their key wines, to cellar and store and rerelease at 10, 15 and 20-year increments. Demonstrating the beauty, age-ability, and elegance of these powerful Helderberg wines, an answer of sorts to the emerging trend of fresh, low-alcohol, youthful wines, possibly set by the requirements of modern life and a new generation. Young people not necessarily having the storage space, patience, finances, or interest (given all the immediate options) to store a powerful wine for 10 years to monitor and enjoy its age-ability and expression.
