Cape Town - Renault’s new bakkie, the Alaskan, has been revealed and will be the automaker’s attempt at taking on light commercial vehicle (LCV) stalwarts such as the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger.
The Alaskan will be going on sale in South America first, with other markets set to follow. No release dates have been revealed yet.
What about SA?
Renault South Africa says "nothing has been confirmed as to whether the bakkie will be available locally" though the automaker adds that its Alaskan will be up for discussion as to whether it will suit the local market.
The credentials
The Alaskan will be available with both petrol and diesel options.
The 2.5-litre petrol engine is set to deliver 120kW and the 2.5-litre diesel engine 140kW. Both engine types will be make use of turbo technology and will be mated with either a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed auto.

A choice of two- and four-wheel drive derivatives are also on offer.
In addition, the Alaskan boasts with a ground clearance of 230mm and a towing-capacity of 3.5-tonnes.
Customers will have the choice of a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed automatic transmission, plus two- or four-wheel drive (the latter with a electronic limited-slip differential).

Inside, it features a 5" TFT colour display, 7" touchscreen satnav system and 360 degree camera system. The new bakkie is fitted with powered and heatable front seats and dual-zone aircon.
