Reader: Ban drunk drivers

LIFETIME LICENCE BAN: The trouble with a lifetime ban for drunk drivers is the disparity between offences and offenders. One would need to consider the severity of the offence and possibly the history of the driver.

CAPE TOWN - The Inkatha Freedom Party has called for a lifetime licence ban for drivers guilty of drunk-driving on South Africa's roads.

IFP spokesman Velaphi Ndlovu said: "It is shocking to note that the (2012/13) festive season is not even officially over and already 1279 people have been killed on South Africa's roads."

Reader RIEKIE TILLET believes drunk drivers should be taken off our roads, for ever. Here's what she wrote:

First, I agree with Ndlovu.
How often do you have a mess in traffic with no support from the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department. Instead they they sit next to the road with a speed camera.

As far as drunk drivers are concerned, a repeat offender should be taken off the road permanently.

There should be a database available to officers pulling people over and if the drunk driver’s name shows up twice already he or she should not be allowed to drive again.

Friday nights I am really too scared to go anywhere. These drunk drivers are reckless and they have no concern about cutting you off or driving through red lights at high speed.

Should you swerve at the wrong moment you could collide with another vehicle and the reckless driver will be gone, never the wiser for the destruction he/she has caused.

Wheels24 says: We agree on tough penalties but they should be equal in equal circumstances, which is why there are periods of licence withdrawal depending on circumstances and results. Banning, say, a 20-year-old for life is much, much worse than banning a 60-year-old for the same level of offence.

Do you agree with Ndlovu's sentiments on a life ban for drunk drivers? Should traffic cops stop trying to ambush drivers? Email us and we'll publish your thoughts on Wheels24. Or use the Readers' Comments section below...
