Maryland - A mechanic has transformed a 1970’s VW camper into one of the most unique kombi's yet by creating the worlds first sideways-racing van.

It took over 1000 man-hours and about 5 weeks to prepare the van for its racing debut. Can it race? The vehicle, called the 'Meet the 'Trippy Tippy Hippy Van', has managed to complete 226 laps on a 3.2km circuit.

Known for crazy car builds

Jeff Bloch (44), aka 'Speedycop', and his team, are well known for outlandish race cars which include an upside down Chevrolet Camaro and a plane that was converted into a street-legal vehicle.

Bloch said that he was inspired by the thought of creating something nobody has done before, and settled on a van that's capable of driving on its side.

It is claimed that the converted van can reach 100km/h in 8 seconds.
