South Carolina - The mayor of Aynor, a small suburb in South Carolina, was pulled over while riding a lawnmower through the town, without any lights on a dark road.

As seen on the police vehicle's dashcam, the incident took place around 8.30pm on August 25, after the mayor reportedly went to refuel his lawnmower.

Open beer bottle

In the video, a Horry County police officer says: “You also have an open container."

“I know, I apologize for that,” replied John Gardner, who is also the chief financial officer for Horry County Schools.

Myrtlebeachonline.com reported that the officers made Gardner pour out the beer, which Gardner contends was not open.

Gardner said in an interview: "It was unopened to the best of my knowledge, I remember opening it to pour it out."

The website reports that Gardner said he was not cited and the video shows officers saying they would call the Town of Aynor to handle the situation.

A misunderstanding

Gardner, who was elected in 2016 and who is up for reelection this year, said he had put fuel in the lawnmower after cutting his mother-in-law’s grass, and picked up the beer at the gas station.

He said he thinks he was pulled over because the lawnmower had no lights.

He added: “It was just a misunderstanding."
