Johannesburg - Remember the scene from the Lion King, the one when one of the hyenas says Mufasa’s name and the other one gets shivers down the spine?

Well that’s what happens whenever someone says AMG! You can’t help but say “OooWeee”.

The engine name was birthed after two former Mercedes mechanics Hans Werner Aufrecht (A) and Erhard Melcher (M) started a company in 1967, which they then named AMG.

Now you’re probably wondering what the G stands for right? 'G' is the first letter of Aufrecht's birthplace, Grossapach.

The company soon virtually became an overnight success producing the Francorchamps 24 Hour class race winning AMG 300 SEL 6.8 back in 1971. This was one of the milestones that led to the official collaboration with Mercedes Benz in 1990, releasing the first production AMG.

The C63 which climbed to 5000 unit Sales by 1997, become its first best-seller, Mercedes-Benz AMG then was totally owned by Daimler AG in 2005.

So why the brief history lesson? Well the iconic badge celebrates 50 Years this year and its a call for celebration, so lets sing and shout at the top of our voices and salute the badge that has had people screaming “All Money Gone” and even “All My Goodness” in the quest to find what the acronym stood for. But most of all, let's salute to the next 50 years of beautiful design, amazing engine and of course, the best or nothing.
