BERLIN, Germany - Audi debuted a raft of changes for its R18 e-tron quattro racer that competed at the world's oldest sports-car endurance race, the Le Mans 24-Hour in June 2014.

The team grabbed a 1-2 victory, with France's Benoit Treluyer, Swiss driver Marcel Fassler and Andre Lotterer of Germany came home three laps ahead of the second Audi led by Danish driver Tom Kristensen. Audi stretched its dominance by winning the previous five titles at the high-speed circuit in Western France.

The R18 ran a revised V6 TDI engine with an electric turbocharger, upgrades to the flywheel accumulator system and an exhaust heat recovery system.

The race cars only weighs 870kg, but the 'feather-weight' car still needs to meet the stringent safety regulations laid down by the Automobile Club of the East , the Le Mans governing body.

For example, to protect the driver during a lateral impact, regulations prescribe Zylon side panels. It also features a rear-crash absorbing structure made from carbon fibre-reinforced plastic.

The automaker has dominated the race since it won its first title at the famous race in 2000. Since then its amassed 13 titles, making it the most successful team this century.

For 2014, the cars' width was reduced by 10cm and the height increased by 20cm, it also added two front wings to aid aerodynamics. The 2014 car featured blue laser beam backlights with a yellow phosphor crystal lens complementing the LED headlights.

The Audi R18 e-tron quattro uses less fuel than any of its predecessors. In addition to the powertrain, aerodynamics makes a significant contribution to achieving excellent lap times with low fuel consumption.
