MARANELLO, Italy – Ferrari’s new 488 Spider, its most powerful mid-engined V8 with a retractable hard-top, will make its debut at the 2015 Frankfurt auto show in September.

Ahead of its launch, the automaker has released details of its new convertible in Blue Corsa livery.

V8 POWERED DROP-TOP

The 488 Spider is powered by a 3902cc turbo V8, debuted in the 488 GTB and capable of delivering 492kW/760Nm to the car's seven-speed F1 dual-clutch transmission. Together, they can rocket the Spider to 100km/h in three seconds and 325km/h.

Ferrari said: “The turbo V8 has a unique character, delivering increasing levels of power right across the rev range and completely eliminating the traditional turbo lag with a throttle response time of 0.8 seconds.”

AERO SOLUTIONS

The 488, Ferrari says, is the automaker’s most “aerodynamically efficient Spider” yet thanks to a series of complex aero solutions for optimal downforce and drag reduction. Its power rear wind-deflector can be adjusted through three positions.

The hard top takes 14 seconds to rise or retract.

NEW FERRARI HARD TOP: Ferrari was the first manufacturer to introduce the retractable hard top on a car of this particular architecture. "This solution," Ferrari says, "reduces weight by 25kg and improves comfort compared to the classic fabric top." Image: Ferrari
