SA rally champion Gugu Zulu will be part of one of the adrenalin-filled daredevil stunts to be seen at this year’s much-anticipated Top Gear Festival – powered by BP Ultimate – at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit from March 17-20.

The 31-year-old professional racing driver from Paulshof in Gauteng, who is no stranger to danger, will be performing the opening stunt at the motoring spectacular in a powerful 193kW S2000 Volkswagen Polo – the same rally car which has led the BP/Volkswagen racing team to championship victory for a seventh consecutive season last year.

Zulu, who will join a long list of local and international motoring legends, says he can’t wait to perform at the event.

'MY ULTIMATE PASSION'

“I’m so excited about sharing the stage with motor racing legends such as David Coulthard, Derek Bell, Sabine Schmitz and Clarkson himself, of course!,” he said.

“Rallying is my ultimate passion in life and I cannot wait to share the thrill and exhilaration of the sport with other motoring fans come March.”

Zulu burst on to the motor racing scene as a 22-year-old in 2000 without the usual background of motocross or karting experience. His first taste of the sport was as a participant in the Isondo Development sports car series called Sports 2000.

He won 16 out of 18 races and the title at his first attempt. He graduated to senior circuit racing as team mate to the legendary Sarel van der Merwe in the WesBank V8 championship, driving a Ford Mustang in 2001 and a Chevrolet Camaro in 2002.

'UP-AND-COMING STAR'

He joined the BP/Volkswagen rally team in 2005 and won two Class A5 titles in 2007 and 2009 with co-driver Carl Peskin. He is the 2010 reigning champion for Class A7.

Tristao Abro, BP’s brands and insights manager, said: “Gugu is one of SA’s up-and-coming rally stars and it is fantastic to have him affiliated to our brand at what promises to be the biggest motoring festival in Africa”.

To see Gugu Zulu in action at the Top Gear Festival you can now buy your ticket at any BP Express shop in Johannesburg from mid-February.

Tickets are R250 and will give you access to all the outdoor festivities (apart from the Stunt Theatre, which can easily be upgraded through Computicket).

Your BP Express shop ticket will also entitle you to a special hamper courtesy of BP Express that includes a Top Gear DVD and which you can collect as you exit the festival. Remember to keep your receipt to show as proof of purchase!
