Super Lambo SUV

Lamborghini presents, what it calls, the "ultimate super athlete" in the SUV segment at the 2012 Auto China held in Beijing. It’s good for 440kW, but would you really want to take it off-road?

Lamborghini’s long-awaited SUV shows off the Italian supercar maker’s flair for design along with its innovative use of light-weight carbon fibre technologies. According to Lamborghini, the Urus will also offer the lowest CO2 figure in its segment.

The SUV concept, however, shows off its rugged side with four odd-looking seats said to be “generous”, a generous luggage area, variable ground clearance and permanent all-wheel drive.

THE FUTURE OF THE FAMILY

Lamborghini says the Urus will expand its customer base “enormously – appealing to families and the drivers of Lamborghini super sports cars who have thus far driven SUV models from other brands.”

Company president Stephan Winkelmann said: “The Urus is a very concrete idea for the future of Lamborghini – as a third model line and as the perfect complement to our super sports cars.

“SUVs make up one of the most successful market segments worldwide. The Urus is the most extreme interpretation of the SUV idea; it is the Lamborghini of the SUVs.”

The key markets for the latest Lambo include the US, UK, Germany, Russia and the Middle East and, of course, China where the SUV is being revealed. The automaker expects to produce around 3000 Urus SUVs per annum from its Sant’Agata Bolognese facility.

ANCESTRAL BULL

As for the name? Keeping with Lamborghini tradition, the Urus (or Aurochs) is one of the wild ancestors of the domestic bull and the Spanish fighting bull, the automaker says, is very close in appearance to the Urus.

Befitting the stature of a powerful machine such as the Urus, the SUV’s length stretches to about five metres and it’s 1.99 metres wide, but pays homage to its supercar roots with a height of just 1.66m.

It also generates a healthy dose of supercar-like performance, thanks to a 440kW power output and low kerb weight in line with Lamborghini’s lightweight design philosophy. The Urus is said to set new benchmarks in dynamics and handling with a low centre of gravity, height adjustable front spoiler and adaptable rear spoiler that allow the SUV to be adjusted to a number of driving conditions.

Permanent all-wheel drive and traction control are standard.

This is a second go at the SUV segment for Lamborghini who previously produced the twelve-cylinder LM002 between 1986 and 1992, during which time just more than 300 units were built.
