5 Favourite Scenic road trips in the Western Cape

Cape Town - There's nothing like an old-school road trip to get the family love flowing freely...

Yeah, we know. The term 'family love' often means screaming, hitting, pinching and fighting with your siblings on the backseat of the family sedan. But it also means having these best of friends right by your side. Even if it's All. The. Time.

If there's one thing we can teach you about family road-tripping, it's to keep it short and simple.

If you're in the Western Cape this festive season, there are plenty of exquisite and relatively short road trips to embark on from the hub of Cape Town.

Whether you're after a foodie road trip around Chapman's Peak, or perhaps prefer a scenic drive along the West Coast to its secret, quiet beaches, the Western Cape literally has it all.

Here are some of our favourite family road trips to do.

Clooff Pass, or Constantia Nek

This is also knowns as the oldest pass in SA. When Jan van Riebeeck crossed it on 23 March 1657, he named what we now know as Constantia Nek, Clooff Pass.

Back then it was mainly used to transport timber from the Hout Bay valley to the settlements at the Castle of Good Hope and Woodstock Beach. Nowadays, however, it leads to the lovely Cape Town winelands of Constantia. It is also home to the highly acclaimed Constantia Nek restaurant - a must for foodies.

Franschhoek and the Winelands

Interested in more of a day outing than a breakfast run? Franschhoek and its stunning Winelands surrounds is the perfect place to spend the day.

For road trip lovers, the 160-year-old Franschhoek pass masterpiece is as stunning today as it was back in the day, offering some of the most spectacular Winelands views.

Stretching between Franschhoek and Villiersdorp, the pass is the oldest properly engineered road in South Africa. Accessible to all vehicle types, it offers exquisite views and remains extremely well maintained.

The West Coast and Tierberg Pass

If you're after a little adventure on your road trip, Tierberg would be the go-to spot.

Apart from the adrenaline kick you'd get out of summiting this steep pass, the road to the Tierberg pass is also a Western Cape must.

Opt for the R27 meandering all along the Atlantic Ocean up the West Coast, rather than taking the national highway or N7. Along the way you'll stumble across iconic West Coast classics like Veldrift, Paternoster, Yzerfontein and Melkbosstrand.

NOTE: The Tierberg pass is only accessible to 4x4 vehicles.

Cape Country Meander in the Overberg

This is the perfect option for a day outing exploring the valleys of the Western Cape.

The Cape Country Meander takes you on a soul-enriching journey of eight delightful Overberg towns: Elgin, Bot River, Caledon, Genadendal, Greyton, Villiersdorp, Tesselaarsdal and Riviersonderend.

And for road trip lovers, the view from the top of Sir Lowry's Pass over the entire False Bay is something to behold.

Located less than an hour from Cape Town, this quaint route provides you with a selection of memorable experiences - from action-packed ziplining in the Elgin Valley, to cuddling up to Alpacas in Villiersdorp, mountain biking in Greyton, brushing up on history in Genadendal and enjoying all the delicacies the region has on offer.

Chapman's Peak Drive

Tourists and locals alike love taking the Chappies route around the mountain - even though it takes a bit longer. And rightfully so. This road trip route offers perhaps the most beautiful and unspoilt view of the Atlantic from the outer side of Table Mountain.

If you're exploring it, take some time to stop in one of the fishermen’s’ villages on the way for a portion of the freshest fish and chips. And have ice-cream once you arrive on the other side.
