    I am a VW fan so I must admit there was some bias involved when writing this article. Anyway, let's get down to the car test.

    I don’t know much about kWs, torque, etc. I'm sure there are many guys out there that are the same. What I do know though is that a car with 147 kW under the bonnet is not something to play around with. It picks up speed blisteringly quick. The dealer says my car comes fitted with the same motor as a Golf 5 GTI, the 2.0 FSI Turbo, so it has some grunt

    Now I’ve driven many cars, Subarus, M3s, etc, but unfortunately or sadly none were owned by me. They are all awesome cars, I must admit, but getting married recently, I was forced to get a family car. So naturally I went to VW’s best Jetta.

    My greatest buy so far - the upsides

    What I love about my car is its stealth. Let me explain. No one would expect a Jetta to be this quick. I mean, it's sort of considered as an old man’s car. But let me tell you, when you need to overtake or to mess around on that odd day when you do want to feel yourself being pushed back into those damn comfy seats, this car is nice to have around. 0-100 in around 6 or 7 seconds ain't too bad for a car of this sort.

    Yes, it comes at a price of around R280 000, but it comes with lots of standard features. Heated sport leather seats, full climate control, ABS, ESP, 17-inch wheels, electric windows, maintenance plan, etc.

    In this car, you sometimes forget how quick you are actually going until you look at the speedo, so quick, and yet, for its size, very nimble.

    And when it comes to loading, my goodness, it has an unbelievably HUGE boot. I have no idea how they do it, I mean, it doesn’t look big from the outside, but pop open the boot and you’ll see what I mean. It's like you're in a sci-fi movie and when you open the boot, it's like you looking into another dimension. LOL that’s how big it is. I’ve fitted everything from curtain rods, to fold away metal tables, to tyres, prams, you name it, it all goes in. Yes, sometimes I need to fold the back seats down to get more in.

    The downsides

    I can't think of many downsides. However, driving in peak hour traffic sometimes makes the fuel consumption go sky high. I guess that’s the same with many cars.

    In any case, I love my car, the stealth, the space, the comfort, the luxury, everything. I don’t think people realise how nice Jettas really are to drive. My advice is to set up a test drive. And next time you see a Jetta next to you, think twice before having a go at it. It might be me, hehe.

    My wife drive's the VW Jetta (5) 2.0L The car is great for town and city driving considering that the max torque is available at 2400rpm. The 2.0L enjin is also more than capable on the open road and there is plenty of space for the family and the luggage.

    This is what I like about L Savage. He gives fair comments and that's how someone should comment. I've never read something of L Savage where he only criticised the car, he points out the positives aswell. Good for you L Savage, more people should reason like you do.

    I am 100% in agreement with Jean-Pierre Bester here. The Jetta is a great car, but its pricing is out of kilter. I considered and test drove a Jetta 2.0FSI when I bought my Civic VXi. To be fair I really liked the Jetta and if it had been selling for the same price as the Civic, I might be driving a Jetta today. But what put it into perspective was that for the price of the Jetta (once all the required optional extras had been ticked) I could have bought myself an Accord, so really the decision to go for the Civic was one of the easiest choices I have ever had to make. VW tried to make the Jetta a premium player in its class, and to a certain extent they succeeded. The Jetta is about as good as you get in its segment, which is to say its on a par with cars like the Civic, Mazda3 and Focus. But when it came to pricing, VWSA seemed to lose sight of what the Jetta was competing against.

    A couple of points on the review: The 2.0TSI costs R308K - that is a full 10% more than you have quoted, and what might, at todays prices be considered a reasonable price for the car. It is better equipped than most Jettas which require a lot of optional extras (whose cost gets "forgotten" when calculating resale) with only the Multifunction steering wheel being optional. Also I have to disagree on your point about the boot. Yes it is huge, but they haven't managed at all to make it look small from the outside. The Jetta has a huge butt. Sorry.

    They sure are lovely cars, actually considered one a few months ago. I liked it much more than the B7 Audi 20T. It is more bang for buck, with the Audi all those nice to haves will cost you plenty.

    Erm, yeah great car and all, but sorry, very over rated. To the people out there that say you cannot compare it to Jap cars, you have never driven a jap car. Japanese cars are very greta cars, and I will always consider a Japanese car over any VW.

    Our company have a 2.0 TDi Jetta 5, and the torque on that car is AMAZING! 320 N.m of torque shoving you back in your seat...... One criticism with regards to that is, it feels like the suspension can't cope with that power. The car's nose is going hayward when pushed.... But it doesn't get pushed that often, because I am the sole driver of that vehicle. Lucky me hey...

    In my opinion, they should discontinue the 1.6 and 2.0 and keep the 2.0 FSi and diesel powerplants. Renault did the same with their Megane Sedan range, they stopped the 2.0 engine and only produce it with a 1.6 and 1.9dCi engine, which makes sense, cause the 2.0 was not a very popular engine choice, as is the case with the Jetta, the 1.6 and 2.0 are not loveable engines in that range....... Just an example....

    the jetta is a good car but in terms of engine tech in the 1.6 and 2.0 it seems like a fossil compared to the rivals eg: the 1.3 corolla has 74 kw and with the 1.6 at 91kw but then again the jetta has a better rear suspension and a maintence plan (which is downgraded on the golf6 to a service plan)but just look at the quality ratings and the sparce spec of the cheaper models

    I own the 1.9 TDI and it has been a pleasure to drive for over 3 years now. You mentioned your fuel consumption, I am so lucky on the other end of the model range cause I get 15 km/l in traffic and +- 20km/l on the open road. The 1.9 is no slouch either. I am in the market for a new car and have been for about 6 months, but there is nothing out there that beats this wonderful car :-)

    Jetta is a great car. If anyone's looking to buy a VW in the Potchefstroom- Klerksdorp area, go to VW Potchefstroom for great service. VW Klerksdorp really has bad service. Service depends a lot on the dealer.

    Aside from the 1.6l, Jettas are quite nice. The reason why the are "over-priced" is because they are premium vehicles to Corollas, Mazdas, Hondas etc. Sure they might not come standard with all the bells and whistles but as drivers cars, they are superior. The entry level 2.0l is an old tech motor that is some 18 years (remember 2.0 CLi 8V)old but it is damn good......the reports state that fuel consumption is poor on this model but experience tells me otherwise...love em Jettas.....Would luv a 2.0 Turbo with DSG!

    I agree with you Christie. VW's service is shocking, and the reason I don't have one. Secondly, their cars are a bit overpriced in comparison with their rivals. BUT it doesn't make them bad cars, it makes them good cars with bad prices. Anyone agree with me here? I really would like to get your point of views.

    i agree with u man that jetta is a monster on the road. i mean its 2 in 1, u have a family sedan nd a jet if u feel lyk being a boy once in a while, great choice

    Had one myself for two years. Agree with all what you said however changed brand due to VW service levels. I still miss the output if driven enthusiastically.

    I have been owning one for almost 3yrs now and bliv me,a jetta is a complete package and take a long trip and see how u feel after relaxed becos of the roominess inside.And 4 once all cars whether vw or bmw and merc have got problems but not all..it all depend on taste and affordabilit.sum like bm and will say all the gud things abt it but yes we do see 'em being towed or stuck on the side of the road.Jetta is a stealth.

    Please don't listen to Kike, he is very biased. Even with my review of my car, he thought I only had it for a week. His comments means nothing. The Jetta is a great car.

    I like your review, simple but to the point. Jetta's are indead under-rated, and the SA press would rate it in the same class as a Mazda 3, and quite frankly the Jetta is in a class of its own (probably the reason why the owners are mostly satisfied, and another reason why you do not get a cheap Jetta).

    Decent enough review. I should point out that your 0-100 times are somewhat optimistic. Even with a DSG box you're going to have to fighting to get 7secs. In a manual it's closer to 7 and a half seconds. The boot is certainly enormous (bigger than the Passat!) but it's the accessibility which is a problem. A hatchback or estate is always going to be preferable when you have to load bigger items.

    Wat a fantastic car. GTI performance on a carpet and yet so underrated. Two friends of mine had once, the first one had a problem with wind noise which was never solved even after many visit to VW, and the other one complain about loss of power steering on his. Overall, its a fantastic package!!

    I would realy like for owners to have the cars for at least 2 years before writing a review. To write something during the "honeymoon" phase does not help "joe-soap" out there.

    Beautiful car, and the latest incarnation of the original Jetta GLi. I still fancy the last Jetta 4 V5 models too though - nothing beats the sounds of a 5-Cylinder motor! Iqram, you may wish to mention the model in the piece somewhere (TFSI).

    Well, great car you have. I thought about when I looked at buyin a car a few months back, but my budget wouldn't have survived the 280k tag. With a great engine, the Jetta is a alternative to the boy-image Golf GTI(interestingly enough, saying I'm not a VW Golf fan is an understatement). Being technical, I think your car does 7-8 seconds for that famous 0-100km/h sprint! But that's still fast for a family sedan. Heated seats and autoclimate control are just great to have. I wonder whether the author did consider the diesel version (having to get married soon), due to its lower fuel consumption. Have great motoring fun in your 2.0 FSI Turbo Engine!!

    nice Jetta.however i disagree that the Jetta does not look that big from the outside.it actually looks huge.in fact it looks slightly over-weight.not fat.i also like VW, i just bought one and i am also very glad with my purchase.but if i had 280K+, i'd go for a decent hatch.the hatch just is more practical and there is no worry about bumping that fat bum
