Wilmer Muller:
I like the new Golf… Forget about the bland design and look deeper, and you will find a car that is sophisticated beyond what's expected from its segment. After spending almost eight weeks with the 90-kW 1.4 TSI derivative, I can't help but to be impressed…
If you love driving, then you won't be disappointed with the Golf 6. The turbocharged TSI engine under the bonnet is more than capable, and even delivers a bit of a thrill. In my opinion this 90-kW unit is the winning choice if you're in the market for a Golf, as it not only delivers sufficient performance but good fuel economy too.
Furthermore the new Golf offers a good balance of build quality and comfort. Where the car lacks excitement is with its uninspiring design. However, with the latest Golf, Volkswagen shows that it is still the leader when it comes to family-sized hatchbacks. After all, it is a segment the German carmaker created with the original Golf.
Hailey Philander:
The Golf 6 certainly is not the most attractive vehicle around, but where it loses out on styling, it makes up in absolute composure and winning dynamics. Also, equipped as it is with the World Engine of the Year winner - the twincharged 1.4 TSI motor - the overall package makes a very compelling statement.
We spent most of our time with this 90-kW turbocharged version, which for the daily drive and the occasional jaunt into the countryside should be more than enough to fulfil the average user's needs.
It handles superbly, is extremely comfortable, spacious enough for five occupants, has a quiet cabin, and comes with the additional assurance the Volkswagen reputation offers. With its solid heritage and broad fan base, the latest Golf succeeds in moving the game that much further away from its rivals. Spend enough time with it, and it even starts looking attractive…
Lance Branquinho:
Everybody hates the Golf 6. It's supposedly too expensive and too similar to the Golf 5.
In reality though, the subtle evolution in NVH refinement has now elevated the Golf range to a level of refinement and sound insulation previously only the preserve of BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz products.
It’s nice to drive too, thanks to the gutsy forced induction engines (you’ll love their diminutive capacity when emission taxes roll around next year), neatly geared power steering and of course, the multi-link independent rear suspension.
The only issue I have with Golf 6 is to justify the difference in outlay between the 118- and 90-kW TSI models, the power difference of which is hardly perceptible in everyday driving…
Sergio Davids:
It seems that whenever VW releases an updated Golf, it seems to be just that – an update. It appears that the mentality behind the new Golf was one of, “if you’re going to copy anyone, why not copy yourself." Right?
Once you get behind the wheel though, all your preconceived notions about the new Golf will disappear. Inside you’re greeted with an interior that is as practical as it is stylish. Everything seems to have a quality finish, with the black leather and chrome trimmings of the test unit conveying a great sense of style.
Drive a Golf 6 and you’ll soon realise why it is the 2009 World Car of the Year.
Smooth gear changes coupled with limo-like refinement makes driving the Six a grin-inducing experience.
It’s not cheap by any means, but you still get feeling that you’ll get what you pay for, judging by its competitors.
